That's a trachyandesite. You find the same thing in the Oregon Coast range; it's all the same bed rock for the most part. Crescent Formation/SRV isn't all Basalt and Sandstone. There's a lot of weird, exotic igneous stuff found throughout, especially as you get on the edges of the SRV (Roseburg/Port Angeles areas).
@OldGuyAdventures22 күн бұрын
Thank you for the identification. I know the Olympics have lots of minerals that most people are not aware of and I keep finding rocks I have never come across before
@BP_in_OR22 күн бұрын
@OldGuyAdventures I've watched your channel for a long time and I've always been puzzled why you find so many jaspers in the Crescent. There's only one place in Oregon CR I'm aware of that has anything close to what you've found, and clearly you find much more of it on the regular than I've ever seen in a lifetime of exploring. Recently, it occurred to me that while the Crescent is the exact same as the OCR (stratigraphically-speaking), the Crescent is tipped on its side, whereas in OR you still have kilometers of Tyee sandstone to get through to the igneous stuff and the igneous stuff you can find is either intrusives, dike systems coming up through the sandstone, or basaltic stuff that has been faulted and shoved up above the sandstone (e.g. Roseburg, Mary's Peak etc) In Washington, that Sandstone that is still there is practically sideways and shoved upwards (top of Mt. Olympus, Mt.Townsend etc). You get to see the underside of the same stuff we have in Oregon and see what is currently miles below my feet as I type this. Your explorations make me appreciate that much more the awesome places we all call home in the PNW.
@OldGuyAdventures21 күн бұрын
@@BP_in_OR From your message I get the impression that your a geologist that has spent a bit of time researching the coastal areas. I do find a lot of jasper, but it wasn't always that way. It wasn't until I pondered how things erode out of the mountains that my discoveries increased. Then it was just a matter of finding a couple guys who were just as willing to walk into some rugged country for a rock. We all learn in school about erosion and how everything ends up back in the sea. What they don't explain is why the majority of rocks at the end of the stream don't match what you see in the upper reaches of the same stream. Once I figured that out, then it became clear to me where I needed to look and with that my rockpile got a lot better.

Chris! help me remember your favorite spots on Red Top, please. I went out with you a couple years ago maybe when it was your last 3 day feild trip here in Kittitas county, Where did we park and head out onto that slope that had veins and surface stuff. I thought I knew it and unfortunately let my club down yesterday because I could get us there. BTW, 37 degrees and a little bit of snow but not enough to accumilate. I miss your local posts and hope that your life on the penisula is awesome (it looks like it on your videos). Best Regards, Laurel ellensburg.

We parked just below the red top parking area where there is a Y in the road, then walk back up the road towards Red Top about 100 feet. Then head straight down the hill about 300 feet and there still should be some float material under those small trees at the edge of where we were digging. You want to be to the far left of the meadows, right on the edge of the steep hillside that drops right below the veins
