Great insight on the urinal screens holding odors after being marinated in there. The problem I have with taking them out is that there would be a major splashing problem. The urinals on our campus are narrow and don’t have much ability to catch the splash. I’ve used the urinal without a screen and got my pants wet from the splash. Gross.

i use urinal screens in the factory i work in.. in facilities.. they have a fresh clean smell at first? but after awhile of course it dissipates.. my factory runs 3 shifts so we cant let things sit overnight. only time it smells clean n fresh in the guys bathrooms? is from urinal screens. im afraid NOT to use them

My man! I quit using urinal screens for all the same reason you stated. The screens hold in that musty urine smell and I think they are disgusting. I actually quit using clips and other types of deodorizers too. I feel like the deodorizers just mask the odors and issues. If you clean the restroom really good every night, you will contact and kill germs that can cause the bad smells. I’m also a NABC guy. It’s my go to. I also use Spartan Germicidal bowl disinfectant on a weekly basis. That’s for the great content my dude!

While people look at custodians as someone who is a bottom feeder, what they don’t know is the person who is cleaning the school halls is either -A guitarist for a well known cover band in the local scene -An up and coming semipro athlete -someone who can’t afford to go to college and is on a scholarship reimbursement plan -a nighttime comedian Looks can be very deceiving

I worked at a small town HS in Iowa for five years(been doing janitorial since 1993 though). The high school however was massive and within the time I had worked there the district had obtained grants to renovate an elementary and the middle school and built another elementary(everyone had to have a hand in clean up for those, too). For the HS they added 12 classrooms to the north wing, doubled the size of the weight & wrestling rooms, annexed another gym on the south wing with an indoor running track and plans to expand the sports complex which was already outfitted with baseball, football, track, shot put and soccer fields. They also installed geothermal for the HS one summer. That was a mess. We had three people on our cleaning staff...figure that one out. During summer we worked four '10s' but usually got three day weekends. Unlike some schools, our HS was NEVER quiet...it NEVER shut down! There was always something going on there(community, band or sports related). It also didn't help that administrators seemed to have no problem lending the facility out to just about any non-district affiliated entity...it got to be really tiring. And if they made a mess we had to clean that too, of course. The gym had to be on a usage schedule and many times it was supposed to be closed but someone would always be banging on the door saying they had reserved gym time. One time I came in on a weekend to do building checks and not expecting anyone in the building at that time I began hearing commotion in the gym. I walked in and there were some people doing layups but I had no idea what team or district they were from as they were in red Ts(our colors were blue and white). I'm like...what intrigue is this?? Man, we used to get so mad about all the miscommunication there and we always seemed to be the ones to have to sort out other people's errors. [Edit: I seemed to have forgotten: whereas that did happen, it was because our HS was a WaMaC Conference Host. So it was basically open to 12 other Eastern Iowa conference members. We had to 'represent' I guess lol] A whole day had to be reserved to refinish the gym and the whole staff had to be there(well, three custodians, grounds director, the finish distributor and a few back up people). Once that finish was catalyzed, you had to get it down and perfectly within 15 minutes or so per bucket. And once it was down you had no time to go back over a mistake or you'd make it worse(wax was more forgiving than this stuff). So it had to be perfect. All along, the ventilation had to be turned off(including AC)and the doors shut and sealed off to drafts otherwise the finish would flash dry. It was sweaty work in thick fumes. Other things we did in the summer other than strip & wax floors: move furniture for staff/new teachers, install projectors(smart screens/projectors were phasing out white boards then), scrub and paint walls, clean out lockers and account for text books, make trips to the recyclers with truck loads of discarded books, pick up supplies like clay for the art room, change filters & light bulbs, assemble new kitchen or office furniture, extract office, library and auditorium carpets, squeegee windows, pull weeds and other grunt work around the sports complex, adjust toilet and sink valves, change automatic sink batteries...we pretty much did everything except major plumbing or construction. Oh yeah, pest control...seems like we were constantly battling mice in the fall and wasps and hornets in the summer. The school was more or less surrounded by farm fields and a nearby creek, so, we were in line for all sorts of critters. One summer as they were adding on classrooms to the north wing one of the construction workers accidentally cut a glycol coolant line in one of the classrooms. We had just finished those floors, too(2nd level) and put everything in order only to have over three classrooms and part of the hallway flooded with cobalt blue glycol. It even leaked down into 1st floor against the walls and all over the lockers. It was chaos. I loved the job and 'HS Janitor' is 'the job' to have in terms of benefits and pay, but, in my situation the last few years due to the growing population/rural-urban sprawl it just wasn't feasible for me(small town was annexing to a major college town). They weren't planning on hiring more help in step with the scope of work being added, either. So, I quit.

i do think subs get a lot of hate i was a sub before I got a more permanent position. I try not to miss work so I don't deal with this specific issue but what I notice is Mondays r the best day to miss Fridays r the worst. Tuesday thru Thursday r a hit and a miss if they even have a sub available. So for future fyi my choice day to be gone is Monday. If ur gone in the middle of the week u hear from teachers about what didn't get done if u miss on a Monday they r too busy to say much back from weekend etc...I mean they will let u know if something didn't get done I have one or two who will but if u don't miss very often u won't hear these complaints.

Good morning, Mr. Jeff I'm Mr. Dave a head custodian at a Central Cali High School. Here, we have Frontline that subs sign up on, and I can log on and select one. They might sign up to work at my high school, but if an elementary job comes open, they remove their name and take the elementary job because they get off at 8 p.m. instead of 11 p.m. If I don't get a sub, I bank the hours of the absent custodian to use another day, which is handy during breaks. We have a custodian clinic where we train people who want to sub have to take to be placed on the sub list. Saves a lot of time when they show up to work. I really like your page. Thank you.

I volunteered at a Mosque. They had a gym/multipurpose hall. We had roll out carpets for prayer. The Dysons were super expensive and sucked on those carpets. It would get full very often and get clogged often. We used a Seebo corded vacuum and it was great. Light duty is all the Dyson is good for.

Very good advice. Most jobs don’t give a flip and don’t care about you. You’re just there to do a job. I watched a custodian after 34 years of work retire his last day his supervisor did not say anything to him other than hang your keys up in the custodial closet. That was it nothing else. Not even a wish you a great retirement nothing. It is extremely sad to watch people treat people like that, but it’s life and it goes on. But when you have a teacher or a admin staff retire out it’s like a party for a day for one person with rocking chairs as gifts and a big hoopla. I’ve seen this happen over and over. Being a custodian there is never hardly any recognition, but I blame that all on your maintenance supervisor. He is the person that sets example for a great place to work or one that is just a warm body and that’s all he needs in that spot.

Yes true in some places for sure. I worked in a place for 19years. Moved to a different custodian job for a collage. They just let me walk. Just put your keys badge and phone on the desk before you leave. That was it. So definitely do it for benefits and provide for my family.

Our system for subs is you call the operations supervisor, and they find you a sub if we have one. Our subs go through training at every building before they are thrown to the wolf packs. Most of our subs do a better job then some of the full-time workers and we often get asked if they can keep them by the administrators. I think the training has a lot to do with it. The sub can then see what the expectations are and also know how the routine is done correctly.

The thank you's are nice, from staff and students, administrators, especially from co-workers. The random gifts in the mailbox are from a genuine gratefulness of tasks performed. However I get the most satisfaction when I can wow the highly educated colleagues by solving their complex dilemma (touch screen tv won't work) by applying the most basic troubleshooting techniques (plugging the unit into the outlet).

I might be in the minority, but I'm really lucky to work for a large school corporation where the head custodians only need to call the facility coordinator to inform them they won't be at school that day. I am one of three Floating Head Custodians. We will get a call or text usually around 5:00 am letting us know what school we need to cover that day. If we don't get a call or text, we have a designated Home school we are always assigned to work where we just become an extra person for that school for the day. We have 23 buildings, so on any given day I can be just about anywhere. We all three know enough about each building to keep it running efficiently. Our school sub contracts their custodians, so if any of them are going to be absent, it's up to that company to replace that person.
