Sorry for all this but maybe put out a request for trail magic of free camping at someone’s home in Maine & wait for your friends. Then, maybe hike to the summit w/ them & wait & do the rest when you can. Surely you gave followers near Mt. Katahdin. Give it an honest try. Be safe & properly heal.

Being cut of a car at 19 and bolted back together again- My Dad who was a Naval Seabee for 25 yrs told me. "Jenn, don't chase your pain, chase opportunities." Which is what I needed to hear. Each time I was in a wheelchair, I'd hear ppl say, "If I couldn't dance, ski, play sports, ride bikes, jog, jump out of planes, jet ski -I'd die." Well, you don't. You adapt. I watch ppl not give themselves enough credit for every challenge and hurdle they've overcome because the world can tell you it's not enough. Every thought of fortitude is enough. We cry because we are tough, we cry because we care. To have such good ppl remind you the journey has many purposes is such a gift and they are the prize ❤ you've brought so much light to the trail I'll never walk -but was a privilege crossing paths with you WingIt :) and helping take care of ya'll for a moment seasonally working. ❤ You guys are the best! Hugs to you all!

I feel your discouragement. I recently have a resurgence of cancer after 11 years of remission. My hopes of doing a lot of things including the trail now seem impossible. I've decided to just thug it out until I'm done. The treatments might end me, so I'm just saying heck with it, and I'm just going to live what I got left. No experience is ever over, because life is the experience.

It's ruff - the sooner you start to heal the better the long term result. Be smart and step off - there's next year to look forward to. You've gone far - take time to heal. I'm starting over somewhere 03/25/25. I don't know about your thoughts, but I feel I gave up my "thru-hiker" badge when I took the Virgina Creeper Trail so a "finish" is a finish. It is just walking - people think I'm bragging when I say it, but I've been walking since I was about four years old, it's not that hard.

There is absolutely nothing more important than your health. Nothing…. Yes there are lessons and blessings in life… Over my life, I too have had major disappointments and had to live through incredible circumstances. I have always felt the hand of God directing my path even when I was being stubborn and didn’t want to acknowledge the wisdom. It’s good to take a few days to sort through the emotions and choices. Please ere on the side of caution and protection of your health. Healing is paramount. Can you afford to lose your hand if a raging infection invaded it? There are too many opportunities on the AT for more injury and infection. The last two states, NH & ME are the most difficult with a lot of major rock and roots to overcome. Perhaps postpone those states until you have healed. They will be waiting for you. You can still finish the thru hike with in a calendar year. Finish in the Spring of 2025.. Keep your old friends and look forward to new ones when you return to trail. I do believe in God’s wisdom and understanding will be revealed later. You are an amazing man and I truly respect your effort and struggle. I am an Army brat and remain loyal to our veterans, active duty, and retired. My late husband was a Vietnam Vet and is buried at Arlington. Prayers for your health and safety.!!

Why not drive to Maine and find a BB or an efficiency suite or a nice place to camp. Wait till your hand heals once it starts healing it will go fast. Then go south bound till you meet where you are at now. That way you are healing and still can finish your hike. You still have a couple of months but you will beat the cold weather and the closing of katahdin. Prayers my friend😇💜

BTW, I have been thinking that Nightcrawler might have a good idea with the fingerless gloves he hikes in. I almost drove a pointy stick through my hand on a fall in Maine. The gloves seem like a bacteria sweat trap to me, but the protection might be worth it. 🤔

I’m so glad your getting proper care. I got Septic infection in my knee. It was close to being amputated. After 3 surgeries to cleanse the infection out & 3 months of therapy then surgery to break the scar tissue & more therapy I was good. The weird thing is no reason like a cut. I had an abscessed tooth & it spread into the blood stream. Usually if it happens it goes to your brain. Thank God, weird me, went to my knee. Be very careful even if you quit & are the car support for your friends so they can slack pack. That infection is really serious & you don’t want it. Plus, you need you hand as much in working order as possible. You can finish the trail later & if f in 12 months from your start date your certificate is the same even if you become a lash (long ass section hiker). Best wishes. Be safe, be smart, be good to yourself.

"Ohana means family, and families stick together". My favorite line from Lilo and Stitch. You are so fortunate to have the love and support of your tramily (Ohana) there. I hope you were able to get your hand patched up better and can get some relief. You'll need both hands for the rock climbs in NH and Maine. Peace, love, and all of God's Blessings <3 Remember from the first shelter in GA ~ 'keep going' on the wall? That has stayed with me for your entire trip, You're doing great. Keep up the perseverance and you'll be thriving!! Much love always <3

So sorry about your hand. Lots of Dr really don’t seem to care & not trying to offend any. Lord knows there are really good ones . I’ve got a few in my family & lots I use to golf with I love but some are so nonchalant & some just too tired to care. Hopefully you’ll get a good & caring one & they can fix it so you’ll not need more care later. Time consuming & costly. Emotionally exhausting & frustrating.

We are not different, in my opinion. I’ve been chewing on that for a while. I realize that we are still dealing with the same cud.
