Jonathan Davis spoke to Metal Hammer magazine about the track: “Right now, everything is going good, but always in the back of my head I’m just waiting for that next bad thing to happen. I thought it was an amazing way to end the record because it’s all about me battling the darkness and coming out on top, but life is a never-ending loop and there’s always more bullshit ahead.”

The phrase "penance to sorrow" suggests a journey or transformation where Jonathan's actions or thoughts lead him into a state of sorrow. It can be interpreted as a depiction of the emotional weight that comes with realizing past mistakes or dealing with inner demons.

"Hopeless and Beaten" is a reflection on the struggle of addiction and the pain that it can cause. The lyrics describe Jonathan Davis' feelings of being trapped and unable to escape the hold that addiction has on him. He pleads for help, but at the same time acknowledges that he is unable or unwilling to give up his addiction.

This song in particular talks about an imbalance (or a disconnection, according to the title) between dark and light that Jonathan is facing. Despite his awareness of these energies surrounding him, he states that it’s still hard for him to get a complete grip on it, due to the natural contrast (or, once again, disconnection) between the dark and the light. However, one can’t exist without the other.

Lyrics touch upon feelings of emptiness, hopelessness and frustration. The verses describe Jonathan Davis' inability to find relief for the emotional suffering he's experiencing. He yearns to experience some kind of sensation or feeling, represented by a "spark in the dark", but is unable to find it.

The song is about a vivid picture of someone who feels abandoned and forgotten, left to battle their inner demons alone. It speaks to the universal human experience of feeling isolated and misunderstood. The haunting melody and intense vocal performance by Davis further heighten the emotional impact of the song, allowing the listener to truly empathize with the pain and anguish being expressed.

"This Loss" talks about the depression and pain that Jonathan Davis is going through and how the loss is keeping him from being happy again. The loss being the death of his wife.

After the death of Johnathan Davis’ wife, he probably felt very lost and confused trying to find a way out of his depression, but as life goes on it seems to get harder and harder for him to escape it, he might feel the need for help or instruction to get his life together and to move forward. The song talks about how he feels like he’s always the unlucky one, signifying more of the bad things he’s gone through.

The song deals with Jonathan Davis' emotions throughout the years, including the 2018 death of his wife Deven Davis. Jonathan feels imprisoned in his own world with everything he has gone through, from being abused in his childhood to his adulthood trials such as drug addiction, his son Zeppelin being diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes, and the aforementioned death.

"The Ringmaster" portrays the internal struggles of an individual battling their own demons and desperately seeking a way to break free from the darkness that consumes them. Davis has always had a whole bunch of different characters in his vocal range, here we get a high-end register yelp as "The Ringmaster" opens. Musically it’s not a million miles away from the sort of cut we got on 2013’s "The Paradigm Shift" album, with some typically idiosyncratic cymbal work from drummer Ray Luzier. Mid-song Davis loses his shit and goes on a scatting rant, which is always a treat and serves as the songs highlight.

The lyrical content itself is enough to give you goosebumps, whether or not you are aware of Jonathan's tragic loss. The personification of grief as "it", a child, during the verses, makes it all the more harrowing - this feeling, this ghost-like child, is ever-present and has a life of its own that the vocalist is separating it from himself to try and nurture it and avoid the pain it brings him. "Can You Hear Me" was originally revealed on 14 May 2015 on the KZbin channel of music equipment company Antelope Audio. The song was initially intended as a solo work by Davis but was eventually included in "The Nothing" after Nick Raskulinecz heard it. Davis told Kerrang: "That was originally one of my solo songs, but the band took it - just like "Take Me" on the last record was one of my solo songs. Nick loved that song, and the band went back, and did it and I really like how it came out. That's one of the songs with 20-something vocals on it. There are so many harmonies that it's like ABBA or some shit. I love it."

According to guitarist Munky, the title of the song was based on the death of Deven Davis, Jonathan Davis' wife, after a considerably long battle with drug addiction. Many songs on "The Nothing" deal heavily with loss, reflecting Davis' experience with the death with his wife Deven and his mother in quick succession. This is lyrically alluded to in "Finally Free", hinting at someone dealing with what has been described as "perhaps the deepest, most confounding loss of his life". The song is dedicated to Deven and her battle with addiction, serving as an elegy and a celebration of her life due to being "finally free" from the torment. “It’s totally relating to his wife and her death. She went through so much. Him and her together as a family went through so much, and if you know anybody who has battled with addiction, like I have and like so many of us in this band have, you sometimes feel like you can’t shake those demons. She’s finally free, which is essentially how we got the title of the song.“ - Munky
