I visited the Klamath yesterday (Wednesday, December 18, 2024) at several locations between the mouth of the Shasta, up to the old IG dam site. The river is running at about 1100 cfs and it's a beautiful blue-green color. The visibility has improved to pre-dam removal levels. I saw several GB Herons, Kingfishers, and even an Osprey. I think the river is recovering quickly, and the improvements in water quality will soon outweigh the negative effects of the sediment mobilization. I've heard several reports of big, bright winter steelhead already working their way up river. Will they ever have a surprise! Hopefully they'll be able to navigate the Keno dam fish ladder and make it up to Klamath lake.

Hopefully those in the opposition to dam removal will finally begin to see the value of sustainable natural systems and that human were never meant dominate nature but live in harmony with it, as stewards, as a part of the ecology of the planet.

Those ecosystems were built around salmon and beavers. We need to restore those tributary streams as much as possible and let the wild salmon populations rebound.

Watching this is absolutely facinating and satisfieng. I'm from switzerland and for decades we are fithing to get the atlantic salmon back to the river Rhein and its tributarys. We destroyed nature for Profits, lot of nature and its magic will never come back..

That is a beautiful thing to witness. Gives me hope nature can make a comback if given the chance. I can't wait to see a thriving salmon population again and enjoy a bit of fishing up there.

Return? Theyve never been there. Those are probably interspecies mixed and not the "indigenous" one that belonged there.

It's only the very technology everyone here is scorning that makes our lives possible. Easy and cheap virtue-signalling to go on about "unspoiled nature" when all your survival needs are provided by alternate forms of technology, industry and science.

This is living proof that what man destroys, nature can rebuild itself but only if our influence disappears from it entirely. With these salmon returning, it’s only a matter of time when they spawn and their descendants will restore the population tenfold.

Does dam removal work? Just within a year of dam removals on the Klamath River, the salmon began to return in the tributaries of the Klamath River in California and Oregon. These are not fish that have spawned there before. Many generations removed since the early 1900's. This is definitive proof that so many generations removed, they still know where their ancestors began, and they strive to be there again. As a Klamath Tribal member, it is a good thing to see. Many of my brothers and sisters by way of ancestry were not at hand to witness this event. I am. Welcome home to my fish friends.

Siskiyou news. river of death, wake up there is a reason Siskiyou County has declared a state of emergency on the Klamath River blessings
@billsmith5109
@billsmith5109 2 ай бұрын
A state of emergency mostly lets the county spend money without the normal public bid process. In this case it was mostly pandering to people who owned property on the reservoirs. Showed up, made a lot of noise. Got their emergency declaration. Now most old silt will be gone by time snows have melted off mountains next spring. Revegetation effort will continue next spring, with green up of perennials early. By next May or June deer will be seen feeding out on the flats. Trees will be hard to see for maybe five years unless you squint. Lots of people have a hard time seeing trees timber companies plant for a couple years too. The state of emergency will fade away due to neglect and lack of need. It did serve its purpose of letting county elected officials get back to work in a quieter environment.

@billsmith5109 I'm sure you are aware that the toxic mud you refer to was to be removed and prior to that fenced off to protect wildlife and the wild horses, so time will tell and I predict the taxpayers will be left with the massive bill of cleaning up this mess... blessings from Southern Oregon
