There's a weird butterfly effect I discovered. Spongebob wouldn't exist without The Residents. Dean Ween was inspired by The Residents in his early years. He then created the album, The Mollusk. Tom Kenny enjoyed the album so much that he used it as an inspiration for Spongebob

The BBC radiophonic workshop was innovative from the influence of music concrete and developed brilliant sci fi sounds and psychedelic sounds in the early 60's. Delia Derbyshire pulled music concrete together with magnetic tape experiments manifesting the wonderful sounds that were arranged in to the original theme music for Dr . Who.

I believe in the 70’s and into the early 80’s they were - Homer Flynn, Hardy Fox (he admitted before his death he was indeed a Resident), John Kennedy (no not the dead US Prez), and Jay Clem. Plus probably other in Ralph records employment.

Saw them live twice. Once in SF and once in Carrboro, NC. Got introduced to their “music” in 1984 or so by a friend who worked at good old Tower Records. He told me at 1130pm they would put them on in the store to drive people out so they could start closing up.

Not sure if the video supports the myth that the band had some sort of scheme to increase the tempo; the only thing I see after years of watching this video is that they all muffed the ending, but JM gave a second clearer cue to the band and they salvaged it. The band applauds JM after the cut-off, they were a hard-to impress bunch, so I figured that they respected JM (as they should!).

Lol so back in the pre-KZbin days, one of the only places you could find McLaughlin videos was on this website called "When Blue Turns Gold." The Tonight Show performance was on there, and I think it was the first time I ever saw what his technique looked like. I transcribed and performed McLaughlin's solo for one of my jazz improvisation classes in college. There's a chance I might still have it somewhere. Listening to the performance now, I actually don't think it's that great of a solo. Technically impressive? Yes, but I don't find the phrasing to be all that compelling anymore. As an interesting aside, McLaughlin went to a jam session early in his career, and "Cherokee" was one of the tunes that was called. Apparently, he crapped all over it (as we all do when we're young and green), and he was horrifically embarrassed by the experience.

@@davidschwartzguitar I totally get that, still I always go back to how floored I was seeing the whole thing: Johnny Carson introducing him, him just striding out with an acoustic guitar and tearing into it at that tempo. Obviously it’s one of MANY McLaughlin moments that influenced me heavily, but being the age I am coming across it on KZbin was my introduction to him, so it holds a special place. Thanks for your thoughtful remarks!

Ok just to be clear, John McLaughlin is possibly my all time musical hero. If you were learning guitar any time from 2004-2017, more than likely, the famous video of John McLaughlin playing Cherokee on the Tonight Show, made an impact on you as a player. So it goes without saying, this whole thing is done in loving jest.

This was an incredibly informative, cohesive and detailed piece of work. I wasn't looking for anything remotely as detailed. I was only really interested in seeing how exactly you defined CONVENTIONAL Psychedelic Music (late '60s / '70's from a compositional perspective. No disrespect to Timothy Leary and Aldous Huxley, but their notoriously verbose and esoteric musings could not be any less relevant as far as my business here is concerned. I think the use of modal structures as opposed to tonal is the most significant tenet. I also think that the rhythm has to be 'loose' and unpredictable. The harmony conversely should be repetitive to a decent degree. I THINK this is the formula for making really groovy and almost HYPNOTIC psychedelic music. These days I dig more on Jazz than any other genre. Jazz certainly is not void of Psychedelic structures, motifs and idioms. Shit... One COULD ARGUE that the '70s Jazz Fusion Scene featured the greatest Psychedelic Music ever. Anyway. Good job, dude! Be that as it may... Good Job!

Most of this is a nonsense. If you are really interested in this area of Tchaikovsky life you need to read russian researches since they have access to much more information and can much more correctly interpret it. Unfortunately most of it is in russian. The net is that Tchaikovsky was not a biological gay as we understand it now. He was a part of top society of his time and especially when he was young he behaved as they did - many in Tzars family had a similar life style. Tchaikovsky was a public figure. His personal life was frequently discussed in yellow press in his life time but never was interpreted as gomosexual. Only after his death this sort of rumors started.Try to search on " Был ли Чайковский гей " and read serious researchers reviews. But most of these publications are in russian.
