That aircraft looks so stable, more stable than any helicopter. Couldn't someone design something similar that's engine powered but with larger rotors that could autorotate? Or even the same design but with some small engine as a backup.

Still no company has certification after more than 10 years! Realistically this project is still many years away from certification for public transport, the authorities will simply not rake the risk that its safe. And range and payload are also limited. Just use a Bell 505! :-)

I genuinely don't know how you guys - Volocopter, have had, and continue to have the nerve to keep putting out videos on your apparent progress, and yet seemingly no realistic expectation of an operational date, route etc. Perhaps you're all happy to draw your salaries, and maybe it will all work out eventually, but if not, it's another thing to put on your CV's.

@77Plata3 ай бұрын
@@petertarginoklein3862Pretty easy to be aggressive. Volocopter basically has nothing to show that a single model builder with too much budget couldn't achieve as well. Empty promises, a few nice videos, and a manned multicopter controlled by a pilot are unfortunately not innovations and certainly not worth the taxpayer footing the bill so that a few wannabes can line their pockets.

@4ohm5314 ай бұрын
Any flight engineer can easily explain that multi rotors are not scalable for a variety of aerodynamic and other physical reasons. If you make the rotors bigger you need adjustable pitch because you can't control them via RPM anymore. Rotational inertia increases with diameter3 so your rotor size is limited if changing RPM is your means of controlling the thing. That's why you get ridiculous constructions like the ones that get posted here all the time with 8 or 16 rotors, which is about as efficient as breathing through a straw. Tip vortices losses alone on this thing would be flat out ridiculous. The limit to all those machines is power to weight ratio thanks to the battery. Helicopters are already the most demanding vehicles in that category, and creating the world's least efficient rotor system with a ton of small rotors makes this issue infinitely worse. It is no surprise that the only functional electric helicopters (with a real payload of more than one anorexic supermodel) have been an R44 converted to electric drive, and a Sikorsky S300, both featuring a conventional single rotor. Next to that they don't have the safety of a auto rotating helicopter. A helicopter that loses complete electrical and mechanical power still remains controllable as long as there is some kinetic energy in the rotor and some potential gravitational energy that can be exchanged for kinetic energy. But with the volocopter if there is an imbalance in clock wise and counter clockwise rotors it will start to spin, and the computer has to compensate by shutting a opposed rotor down. So the entire thing comes down to the computer. Electrical failure or computer failure and it either falls out of the sky or starts violently spinning. It's a 100% doomed to fail. Physics guarantees it. And those engineers that work on it should know this, which means there is a very high chance it's purpose is just to scam investors.

To get the Volocopter certified, they will have to demonstrate a failure probability of 10^-9 (ten to the power of minus nine).

@avigator2 ай бұрын
