Does anyone love building ww2 planes entirely fron scratch?

Now that is an airplane. A true beauty. My ex mother in law worked on them in the 40s, fitting Bombay doors. Thanks Lillian. You and your fellow lasses did a great job.

All the musicians in the world could never replicate the sound of those engines. they purr like a predatory cat on the ground and roar like a predatory bird in the air. THANK YOU FOR KEEPING THE MEMORY OF THE PILOTS WHO FLEW THES ALIVE AND PRESERVING THESE AIRCRAFT SO WE NEVER FORGET.

These look like the one built by Jackson’s company in New Zealand. They reversed 100 year old technology.

Fabulous . Just a taste of the sensory overload of a ww2 aircraft thanks boys from NZ we ( UK )still have not got a flyer, KA 114 is ten years old now ? Ten years well done , way more than the service life of most of the Hatfield built originals through ww2 and into the fifties .thanks fellas

Excellent video. I am from Uruguay, 85, and appreciate the courage displayed by pilot Fuller. I had a distant relative in Australia by the name of Ms Anetta Hornsey, she was a chemist in Melbourne. A great lady, she visited Uruguay twice, decades ago. I still have a small boomerang she gave me.

Rotary - "A rotary engine is essentially a standard Otto cycle engine, with cylinders arranged radially around a central crankshaft just like a conventional radial engine, but instead of having a fixed cylinder block with rotating crankshaft, the crankshaft remains stationary and the entire cylinder block rotates around it." Wiki.

You know, for the life of me I cannot understand why these hacks aren’t running a club on this engine. It pisses me off to no end, regardless of whether or not she’s a stand engine!
@larrylewislarry8 ай бұрын
Please don’t get too upset by the lack of club propellor - we took a great deal of care in what we did. A club propellor is only needed to absorb significant amounts of horsepower. This engine was only run a number of times to return it to life before being refitted back onto the Mosquito - with its propellor…. These runs were determine its behaviour and condition after a period in storage. The throttle linkage was rigged to limit rpm to idle only and as such is no different to running an automotive engine in neutral. Best regards, The Hacks.

@@larrylewislarry So noted! I used to rebuild these engines when I was a wee lad in the early 80’s for an outfit in Sacramento California. I can only tell you that I replaced many, many, many, many valve seats and guides. I love the big Merlin’s and Griffons, the sounds coming out of our test cell when we were pushing 100” of mercury was astounding. Those race engines were nothing short of spectacular! We ran clubs on everything as the crankshaft counterweights absolutely would not tolerate ANY slappage!
@jerryeinstandig79969 ай бұрын
wont run above idle ?
@larrylewislarry4 ай бұрын
We chose to limit the rpm to idle only until the Merlin was back on the aircraft with a propellor attached.

That sounds grossly dysfunctional. As though many cylinders are mis-firing, or poor timing.

My friend Mate who lived in England when he was a young guy worked at a place , he told me where there was a spitfire plane . He said occasionally that a pilot would the plane out and fly it. Mate said it was amazing sound from the merlin
@robertprice61639 ай бұрын
The greatest sound is that of a child laughing, the 2nd greatest sound is the MERLIN engine. Never have forgotten the day a Lancaster bomber flew over my house, 4 merlins roaring as the plane flew over.
