Wow, what an accomplishment ... everything about this aircraft's story and the people involved is exceptional.

What a weekend Nelson is having

My mother was Johnny Checkett's good friend and tutored him to pass his exams. She also partnered him in badminton. Both were from Invercargill. Johnny was a mechanic and wanted to fight in the Battle of Britain. He was too late for that one.

Imagine being 22yrs old, sitting in that pilots chair, and piloting one of these in war. Thrilling and terrifying both at the same time.

That was lovely to watch, and great to see Johnnie Checketts' son sitting with Al. (For those wondering Johnnie Checketts made the very last flight of this Mosquito into storage after retirement.) Thats a gread video with lovely footage of the props unklike the horrible ones you see with the strange almost frozen look with some cameras.(Usually ones I've done lol) Great job!

Johnnie Checketts gave me a job reference a long, very long time ago. That got me into the aviation business. To me he was simply Mr Checketts - a nice and humble fellow...

Is this a full restoration? Will she fly again one day??
@kiwinznorth3 жыл бұрын
No, engines and props checked. Aircraft now in display condition only
@MarsFKA3 жыл бұрын
Restoring it to flying condition would cost millions and mean replacing all the wood components, just for starters. Because it was stored in a shed for sixty years this aircraft is probably the most original-condition Mosquito in the world and is restored to its present "time capsule" condition. The Omaka Aviation Heritage Centre has another rare aircraft in "time capsule" condition: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:NZ290315_Omaka_Caproni_CA22_01.jpg Only seven Caproni Ca22s were made and this is the only one left. It's too valuable to restore to flying condition.

You would need a new fuselage and new wing, not because of the age but because when John Smith recovered the aircraft he cut the wings off just outboard of each engine and cut the fusleage behind the wing. He did an absolutley outstanding job splicing her back together but in honour of his and his families wished she will stay static and a time capsule of the era.
