Always like your replays. However.... at around 23:00 you attack the 3 German 8-8 which you say are unsupplied. Surely they can trace supply thru 0311 because it has a friendly unit there which negates the enemy ZOC (Rule 11.3).

Thanks Stuart, I really appreciate the view and also the timestamp! Yeah, you're correct- for some reason that rule was one I always struggled while I was doing the playthrough. I'll put a note about this in the description. Again, I really appreciate you watching!!!!!!!!!

I've just been browsing the back issues. Heartbroken to see no: Axis and Allies <- that was a real shock - for my money A&A is the best, and most playable, WW II tabletop game ever sold! Fortress America (not great but there are many US themed boardgames in your list) Civilisation <- Absolutely compelling game if you have 5 friends and 12 hours. Speed and Steel The Awful Green Things From Outer Space. Just some ideas. And if you're not familiar with the last it is actually quite good fun and unlike the best boardgames it is 2 player.

Hey thanks for the suggestions. I've played Axis and Allies a lot, and you're right, its a great game. Not sure why I haven't put together a video of it. I'll remedy that situation. Fortress America is presently in the works, in fact I just worked on the background for it two days ago. Looking at the calendar, I'm thinking it'll drop about the first week in November. WOLVERINES!!!!!!!! Civilization was on my todo list for early next year, but I'm not very good at it. I always try to play the games 5X before making the video (so I'm not too inept at them) and I've just been afraid of the time commitment on that one. But like you say, its a great game. Speed and Steel looks interesting, I don't own a copy, but I've got it on my Christmas list after reading the description. I hadn't played The Awful Green Things, since it was in Dragon Magazine. I was 14 years old then, seems like yesterday- where did the time go? I'll remedy that situation. Thanks for the suggestions- if you've got more keep em coming! I happily take requests!!!!!

I made my own copy of this, as well as a pulp rocket version. There are pix on Boardgame Geek. It hits the table from time to time. Some simple changes I made were, planes take 3 hits before they are down, the burst card causes the number of hits on the card, in a head on you subtract the two burst numbers and the player that played the lower number takes the difference in hits. AA guns still destroy a plane in one hit. This let us develop more strategies. I would love to see this reintroduced.

P.S. It was just recently discovered that the German rules on retreat are contradictory. There are distinct rules on how to retreat Soviets and different rules for how to retreat Germans, with the Germans having an advantage as they only check for stacking at the end of their phase and can therefore choose what to lose if there is any overstacking. But the example shows a German retreat using the Soviet retreat rules! Since it has been so much time, it is not at all clear what is intended.

Informational Markers, such as German Air Interdiction Markers and Disrupted Markers, never count against stacking. This is a game where the Germans can be opportunistic as long as they keep some mech forces out of Soviet ZoCs which lock them in place. Experimenting with house rules for an even simpler introductory game... * Have the ships fire every turn (optional addition to the cadet game rules): - Disruptor Bolts: one point to arm each disruptor, but may fire twice during a turn, spread a quarter turn (4 impulses) apart [ex: if 4 points of power were allotted for disruptors, a Klingon cadet cruiser fires both disruptors on impulse 2 and then may fire them again that turn on or after impulse 6, using a 16-impule turn game]. - Photon Torpedoes: two points to arm, may only fire once per turn (get rid of the arming turn rule). - Plasma Torpedoes: four points to arm. May fire a Plasma-F every turn. Or, if you do not fire the plasma that turn, you may spend another four energy points to fire a Plasma-S torpedo the following turn (or fire a Plasma-G if using a Gorn cadet cruiser). * Simple turn modes: - Every ship may make a turn on every impulse it moves. It may make a 60-degree turn either before or after moving forward one hex. - If moving at a speed where the cadet turn mode is 2 (Fed, Gorn, Romulan: speed 7+, Kzinti: 8+, Klingon, Orion, Tholian: 9+), then the ship may make a turn only AFTER it moves forward one hex. - The ship may make a sideslip instead of making a turn that impulse. No turns may be made with a sideslip. - Shuttles, drones, and plasma torpedoes may make a 60-degree turn before AND after it moves forward one hex in an impulse. * Full-size ships using the cadet Energy Allocation Form (EAF): - When playing 16-impulse turns, the speed the ship's 32-impulse movement is halved, dropping fractions [ex: a Fed CA spends 19 energy points to move speed 19, but when playing in a 16-impulse game, it moves at speed 9, dropping the fraction, or where an Orion Raider Cruiser with a warp energy cost of 2/3 spends 14 energy points to move at speed 21, will instead move at speed 10, dropping the fraction in a 16-impulse turn]. - If using the above easy turn mode rule, full-size ships will make a 60-degree turn either before or after moving forward one hex. - If moving at a speed where the turn mode is 3 (Fed, Gorn, Romulan: speed 9+, Kzinti: 10+, Klingon, Tholian: 11+, Orion: 13+), then the ship may make a turn only after it moves forward one hex. - The ship may make a sideslip instead of making a turn that impulse. No turns may be made with a sideslip. - Shuttles, drones, and plasma torpedoes may make a 60-degree turn before and after it moves forward one hex in an impulse. - Spending energy points to activate the shields and life support may be noted in the NOTES section of the cadet EAF. This form of SFB is simplistic, but it gets the game moving quickly and eliminates that annoying "did I move straight last impulse, or what" and the players will not have to clutter up the map with turn and slip move markers. This also makes the game even easier to explain and play with new gamers which is the whole point of the cadet game. Experienced gamers can also use these house rules to quickly fight out large fleet battles.

House rules to streamline SFB for more fast and fun play: No fighters or carriers, just admin shuttles and suicide shuttles (no wild weasels) and each ship only has one spare small craft dilithium crystal to install in one shuttle or drone for the scenario to make that shuttle or drone warp-capable. Otherwise all shuttles are sub-light (speed 1) and the un-crystalled drones are direct-fire drones (1 warp energy to launch, hits the same as an overloaded photon torpedo, may be fired upon by phasers or ADDs (opponent selects what range in the drone's journey to roll), if tractored the direct-fire drone is instantly destroyed, and if it hits a target at range zero, the firing ship receives d6 (1-6) hits from feedback). And all drones must be launched through a downed shield facing the targeted object, like the rules for using transporters (shield stays down for one quarter of a turn and any range zero drone feedback damage goes through the downed shield). A recovered shuttle that has a dilithium crystal may use that crystal to power a shuttle or drone in the recovering ship later. Dilithium crystals cannot be moved by transporters.

When folks get together to play SFB, it can get pretty involved. But when playing lots of ships, the game slowed down considerably especially if drones, fighters, and scatter-pack drone shuttles were used extensively. Just having a few house rules to use cadet rules, 16-impulse turns, transporter shield rules for drones (can only launch drones through a down shield), only use admin/suicide shuttles, and simplified turning really got the game moving. Slow game play (especially when people stop to look up a rule in the Commander's or Captain's sets) really sours players to this warp speed starship combat game.

I've played through all of the Cadet rules now, and have started on the Basic Set. Honestly, I'm very happy with the cadet rules, and can see getting a lot of fun hours out of just that.

@@epicsexycrafttime7475 I have been playing SFB since 1983 or so and have seen the rules balloon from the Commander's Rulebook Vol. I to the 400-page Captain's Rulebook and I reverted to the Cadet Rulebook for its speed and simplicity. I even tried playing the original 1979 pocket-sized microgame rules, but found the Intro or Cadet rules much better. And for big fleet games, play 'em in the Cadet game.

Great video, glad I found your channel. I do like prestag games more than you but I confess it might me the nostalgia factor. I have been playing and collecting wargames since 1970. Keep up the great job.

What are the main differences between SFB and the FASA tactical starship games? I have owned copies of the FASA game, but never got to play against anyone.

I've never played the FASA game, so I had to do a little research comparing the two. From what I'm finding, the FASA game is easier and faster than Star Fleet Battles. SFB in its full game mode is kinda infamous for its incredibly detailed rules set. Right now I'm just finishing up the cadet training manual. Its been pretty fun, and it would be easy to just keep playing it for a long time without having to upgrade. Its available as a pay what you want at www.drivethrurpg.com/en/product/151762. The rules are modular and are very well written for wargame rules. I'm also using the mod on vassal at obj.vassalengine.org/images/d/d1/SFBCADETv3p1p1.vmod With those two things, you can get a pretty good taste of the game playing solo or against another person through vassal. You might give it a try, its all free. (though I enjoyed the system enough to support it and buy the regular rules).

Play against 2 "dummy" monsters. Set the dummy monsters' health at 12, and keep yours at the normal 10. On your turn, play as you normally would. For each dummy monster, roll the black dice. Any numeric doubles (e.g. 2,2) are kepts as well as any energy symbols and damage dice. If they are outside of Tokyo they have to take any heals, as long as they have points to heal. If they are in Tokyo ( or they don't need to heal) they can reroll any hearts. The dummy monster, makes up to three sets of rolls as normal. Any appropriate numbers are added to the first set of doubles rolled (thus if you rolled a 2,2 in the first roll and a 2,3,3 in the second, you would now have a 2,2,2 to keep (for two points) and a 3,3 to keep. If they rolled a 2 or 3 on the third roll, they could then add the 2 to the 2,2,2 for 3 points and the 3 to the 3,3 for 3 points. The dummy monster has to keep any remaining dice of the 3rd roll, just like normal. Energy cards are layed out as normal, and at the end of their turn, the AI monster has rolls a single dice. If the result is a symbol, the dummy monster has to buy the most expensive card that they can afford (if they cannot afford any card, they don't have to buy anything). If the result is a number, they don't have to buy a card. As is usual for the game, the AI monster has to enter Tokyo if the player's monster leaves. After this, at the beginning of the AI monster's subsequent turns they roll a single dice. Being forced to leave Tokyo is based off of not only the roll but the health points of the monster. If they have 10 health points they never leave Tokyo. If the AI monster has 7-9 points and the result of the single die roll is an energy symbol they leave If the AI monster has 4-6 points the the result of the single die roll is ANY symbol they leave. If t the AI monser has 1-3 points they automatically leave Tokyo Hope this makes sense!
