it is the snake vs the bear. the Americans must stack ALL their ships...and they must not be found. do not move the Americans out on the first turn, do not even put them on the board. during the first turns, track the possible range of Jap movements at only 2 per turn. the Japs will assume you've come out, and it will burn their little yellow asses in anticipation. however, you aren't even on the board. therefore, you have the upper hand and can jump them.

I think some of the German units used to attack with in this game are incorrect. I've studied the Battle of Stalingrad and was the lead scenario designer on a title covering the battle, done by SGS Games (shameless plug); the 305th Infanteriedivision and 14th Panzerdivision were the principle German protagonists at the Tractor Factory, not the 60th Motorized as depicted. The 60th motorized were further north, along the "riedelring" or defensive barrier facing the Soviet onslaught along the Kotluban Heights. Anyway, given the simplistic nature of the gameplay and combat system, I don't think it would change the combat results, but it goes to show how little effort the designers put into this title. As far as gameplay, your very first 'fight' against the sniper unit, wasn't really combat - since snipers have no effect on ground units other than generals. Should the Germans have actually depleted anyway? It seems rather drastic given there was no fighting but maybe it's an abstraction by design, to simply attrit the German forces. FYI the Germans never were able to clear region 10 the whole time and the area became known as 'Lyudnikov's Island' named for the regimental commander whose forces held out for so long.

Good stuff and thx! Battles in real life are not usually "fair" or "balanced", so the crux is to understand the battle dynamics and whether one can come up with a better offense/defense. My problem with these historical games is there is precious little in background material to judge whether one did better or not, and a game plan for both sides tha tell a player (especially solo) how to play one side based on historical context (without doing hours of research). Margins of victory are too point-driven and not based on actual condition of your forces and battlefield situation (e.g. preserving all your troop cariiers and engineers while all the tanks of your 3rd panzer division are in flames is not a real win). But back to the point - enjoy the games and take a more "how did I do relative to the real battle" and less on which side wins. It's also good to try some wild strategies (not to game the system) or double down on a real life strategy that got abandoned or poorly implemented. Cheers!

Hey thanks, I really appreciate it. You make a good point about the margins of victory conditions saddled with a lot of games. I rarely include them when I talk about the rules as they seem to have little relevance and always feel real "gamey". Also with Panzerblitz, I always feel that the historical stuff is mostly "window dressing" and that Dunnigan was just setting up interesting situations. Sometimes they work and sometimes they don't. Dunnigan is pretty much forgiven for this as between 69 and 70 (at the time he was working on this game) he released 16 games AND got SPI up and running.

I do not believe that A or I class weapons can fire more (further) than through the adjacent woods hex. H and M can arc. A and I class would hit trees. I do not believe that 81 mm mortar units can ride on tanks in spite of their movement factor. I believe they require wagons, trucks or half tracks. The idea is to force the Soviets to cross open ground and undergo withering fire. I would place the mines next to the forts to reduce the total number of units that can close assault the fortifications at one time. I would place the two 88 mm and one security unit in one fort and the 20 mm quad and two security to the other fort. I would place the remaining anti-tank guns and 20 mm anti-aircraft artillery to the edge of the nearby woods to support the forts. Spotting is important for the Soviets to direct mortar fire. The cavalry move 3 times faster than the infantry. The cavalry can move through the woods and spot from its edge. The German engineers and submachine gun units can be placed in the middle of the woods to control this area. The Soviets want to pick off the poorly defended units without sustaining too heavy a losses

Those sound like good suggestions on play. When I made the video, in order to try to keep things as consistent as possible I tried to stay with the Panzerblitz rules as written and tried to avoid Panzerleader or home rules (hence the armor units being able to carry non-vehicular units - I address this in my latest video). Its been awhile, so bear with me. ;-) The rules F6 and G seem contradictory to me. F says that unless the characters are captured (and orcs, but not Nazgul can capture) the party can move on. G says that if characters from both sides are in the same hex and aware of each other, either side can initiate combat. The first situation pretty much nullify the Nazgul being any sort of threat, which kinda runs contradictory to the spirit of the novel. So I'd go with the rule that if the fellowship move into a hex with nazgul, the nazgul have a chance to spot (per rule j2), if spotted, both sides have the option to initiate combat, after which the fellowship player has the option to finish movement. I'm highlighting this and making a note of it on my rules so that next time I play, I can discuss this with the other player before starting play. I think that the contradicitons in the rules probably came about for two reasons. Berg being Berg, I'd guess that communications between him and the designers/editors was sometimes challenging, and SPI was also trying to get the game out by the Christmas season, so rules inconsistencies were missed. Hope this helps.

@ thank you so much for taking the time to reply! I’ll talk about it with the guy I’m playing it with too. It only makes sense for the Fellowship to be attacked when they’re spotted. I know the game is designed for them to win, but when we played it felt like the Dark Powers didn’t stand a chance of winning.

Just started reading Anna Reid's "Leningrad". What a mess. The Soviets won despite Stalin and his bureaucrats, but it could hardly have been mishandled worse. Anyway, fascinating subject. I was only vaguely aware of the SPI game on the subject, so I am watching this with great interest. SPI games are generally a bit too crunchy for me. I can see that those Fort counters are going to be a huge pain for the Axis player.

Thanks for the book suggestion, I just ordered it on Leningrad. Its an interesting battle. Yeah check out some of the SPI stuff, I used to think it was too crunchy for light play, but they did publish quite a few easy games (The Blue and Grey, Napoleon at War and 30 Year War games stand out- all very easy to play). I've made videos of quite a few of em. Also, if you haven't seen it yet, Russ Gifford has a great SPI website at www.spigames.net/rules_downloads.htm

Glad to see a new episode! I've been thoroughly enjoying your playthroughs of these classic scenarios. This scenario is one I avoided like poison. The terrain alone makes this an easy win with a Russian commander smarter than a potato. Kudos to you on trying it! ' Hey, would you ever consider playing Panzer Leader '40 (variant) on YT? I'd love to hear your thoughts on that campaign. Maybe something to consider for the future?

Hey thanks Joey, I really appreciate it. It was a touch scenario to get through in some ways (though still an opportunity to learn stuff). Only wish I could remember the rules better on the fly- this game has a lot of special situations. I thought that I'd upgrade to PL after making it through all the PB scenarios, but I'm thinking that the "upgrade" may come sooner than I planned ;-).

hey i was in the military combat infantry combat engineers and if someone wants a more realistic ruleset for panzerblits say so. basically wen infantry close assault they should do so by moving onto the enemy hex. most infantry combat is at least than 250m. pb/pzl/aiw also need an overwatch system where one unit gets fire support and one unit gets movement.

That's not a bad idea! PB is pretty basic, I need to explore more modern tactical level tank games (besides ASL) on the channel.

@@epicsexycrafttime7475 example: name games that simulate / take into account training, morale (motivation), fatigue, supply, not to mention small unit tactics. Though panzerblitz assaults really did happen. and no movement if you fire is realistic in ww2 because of no gunstabililizers. AIW is the best of this series as far as realism goes though the "armored infantry" units are lol.

engineers really do have equipemnt justifying combat bonuses and tend to be better trained, smarter, more motivated. engineer bonus is justified.

A 1 pt unit that is 1/2 eliminated is eliminated because you round up which would be 1 strength pt. I think you said it was no effect.
