Either buy new on a full earranty lease...ir buy an old car. DO NOT buy a car of around 4 years old...you will be hit by repairs AND depreciation....esp as newer cars have so much more to go wrong.

I bought a low mileage Mitsubishi Outlander in 2016 for £3500. I've spent around £1500 on it, brakes, suspension, sensors plus £600 on new tyres. It flies through the bi annual safety checks. It still only has 85,000 on the clock. So £5600 in 8 years...£700/year to totally write off the vehicle. As i can sell it for £2000 privately my running costs are £450/year. I wont be buying new.

Most maintenance for a vehicle is not covered under the manufacturers warranty, how does that help save money?Whether you own the car or make payments, you still have to pay the maintenance. And new cars aren't always built better. 2 people in my neighborhood have 2023 Tahoes, both have been to the dealer for numerous issues, while I wave and drive past in my 96 Tahoe😂

Question: is it ok to use a 20K oil filter on 2008 Solara with 169K miles....and the maintenence light comes on every 5K not 3K....OR get a 10K filter and change it every other oil change?? Might jus look in the manual??
@atpgarageatl

@@MariaLopez-mi4ol so oil additives have changed significantly since the car was new. This is where the 10k oil change things come into play. The manual will likely recommend changing oil every 3-5K as that is what was best when this car was new in 08. The V6 engine in these cars were known to sludge up but if maintained it was never an issue. This is why I personally run full synthetic oil in mine and change it every 5K miles. I’ve had an oil analysis done recently with great results and I’m just under 270k miles.

To me buying a newer car never made much sense. You see I pay 5%-10% the price of a new car for a car with 75% of the lifespan remaining. It is older so the repairs are very simple and parts are cheap. The technology is not that high so it "only" gets 150hp which is plenty to get anywhere. The new cars increased horsepower and these crazy electronic features but to keep the price down, the quality had to go way down. So they do not last. And they do not get that much more mpg than the old cars in a lot of cases in real world conditons.

I'm 73 yrs old. I drive a 2002 Honda CR-V that I purchsed 10 yrs ago for $4,000. So it's 23 yrs old now. The car at that time of purchase had 95,000 miles and was in mint condition. And it now 10 yrs later only has 133,000 miles. And I've easily spent around $4,000 over the years in repairs. AC compressor, power steering pump, starter, new tires, several oil leaks needed fixed. It still looks as good as any other newer SUV and allows me great affordable local transportation since I average about 300 miles a month driving. What's interesting is that I see this SUV is actually worth more than I paid for it 10 yrs ago. Would I travel long distance in it? No.. it's way better to rent a new car for a week and not have to worry about a breakdown. So what's the consensus here? Should I keep this old SUV a few more years and chance something major happening that it loosing it's current resale value of about $5,000 and then become worthless because the motor or tranny blows up etc.? Or sell it while it's still in great condition and buy another newer used car? My savings only allow for about $12k for a newer used SUV. But all I've seen these days are newer but with higher mileage than mine and way more costly. Thanks for any opinions.

@@Musicman-50 just my opinion but I always prefer the vehicle I have and know vs the one I dont. If you sell it for a profit and attempt to replace it you are burdened with finding another well maintained used car to replace it. At least with this one you know what has/has not been done to it. As for the rental car I have done that before and it’s not a bad idea in some instances. It keeps the mileage off your regular car too.

I have seen those crvs with 400k miles original engine and tranny, the 2002-2006 CRV is one of the longest lasting vehicles. Your repairs have been really minor just normal age related issues and the price is not so bad over 20 years, the repairs are way more on complex modern cars. if you have taken care of the oil changes and tranny fluid changes, there is no reason the engine or tranny would blow. They do not blow for no reason, you must run it low on coolant, oil, or tranny fluid or let it go for a long time. Check those once in a while keep them fresh and you are golden. Another way you can blow the tranny is by driving crazy fast and doing burnouts.

@@atpgarageatl Thank you for your thoughts here. And I agree with you. Buying a newer used SUV is a risk as I won't know how it was driven, or possibly some teen or adult with a lead foot or other damaging habits. What I do know about my CRV is that in the last 10 I've driven it very carefully and cautiously knowing it's age. But there are occasional times I need to drive a couple hundred miles round trip and knowing that if the car broke down and my towing only covers 25 miles max , so I'd be in a fix. But such is life and honestly I never worried about it when I was younger and driving an old vehicle.

I have about 6 vehicles. 2000 Toyota 4 Runner, 2000 Yukon Xl, 2000 Mercury (last 302), two ‘93 d21 Nissans and a 1999 Ford F 350 7.3. There is nothing on the current market that I would rather have to replace any of these. If you keep cars and work on them themselves, in 20 years time you will have a great set of tools and skills instead of blowing all that in a car payment. I just replaced the ac system on my 7.3. The parts were $400 and I replaced everything which fixed all the issues I was having and now have a stronger ac than when I bought the truck. I have only had a car payment for 3 years on the Toyota, everything else was bought at around 80,000 miles. I bought the Yukon for $50. Best of all, my State does not believe these cars are worth crap, so annual tax on most is like $15. Buy a new car and you enter into one of the most risky financial decisions imaginable. You will buy insurance in case you total it……you pay taxes because you own it….just light a barrel full of cash on fire instead.

I get a new car every 3 years. I have paid upfront cash for my last 7 cars because my mother always told me... "if you have to borrow money to buy it, you can't afford it" meaning of you have to borrow money from a bank to buy it. So I keep a separate bank account that I call "car money," in which I deposit a specific amount, sometimes more if it's a good month, and at the end of 3 years, I've actually waited up to 5 years to get a more expensive car, which wasn't as nice as I was imagining it to be. So I stick to a goal of 15,000, per year, for my "car money" account, and then I try to put twice that amount into my savings account. I give myself a very limited amount for fun money. I really don't need anything and I traveled in my younger years, so I've been there, done that twice already. So my only real expenses are property taxes and insurance and utilities. Oh! And food! It's better to wait a little longer to get what you really want, and pay for it in full upfront.

Dirt cheap insurance, easy to work on and maintain, don't care about dings and scratches, and I don't mind using it like a truck. Runs like a dream too! Dealership has the original for 1,700.00 dollars, plus 4hr labor taxes and fees, that's 2,600 or so. Hyundai dealer charges 170.00 per hour. 4 hours x 170.00 equals 680.00 plus tax. If you live in a non emissions state, and the catalytic converter is not causing symptoms, you can just leave it. Possible symptoms would be overheating or unable to accelerate on highway. But would only happen if it really bad. All the code means is that your cat is only 89% efficient at burning off unburnt hydrocarbons rather than 90% before the light came on. Not that it will cause issues.

Personally I would not trust an aftermarket cat in a modern car. Another thing to keep in mind is why your cat went bad. Usually it is because you are burning oil which clogs the cat. If you dont fix the oil burning the cat will just clog up all over again

@aust4105 as far as I can tell, the engine doesn't burn oil and not losing coolant, but the catalytic converter does run hotter, about 100F hotter than the end. The catalytic converter should be cooler then the end. I'm not going to scrap the old one, I'm going to keep it and look inside and see if I can clean it. In fact, I'm going to clean it at all cost 😅 but feel like I need to do something about it, catycleaner didn't work. It is a GDI engine, so it must have a lot of carbon built up, that's another thing I need to clean. Will let you know, thanks for replying. I don't like aftermarket parts either but I don't want to spend 1,700 dollars just on a catalytic converter. Will let you know the results
