Most versatile guitar I’ve ever found, in 47 years of searching for the right guitar? Love the neck transition. It is a thing of beauty! May the tone be with you?

I have this exact same guitar, mine has "Quadra Lock" and "Made in Japan" on the neck plate though along with the serial #. I've been tempted a few times by people offering trades but can't seem to let this one go. I play it through my mid-90's 100/60w custom Crimson Snake Mesa Heartbreaker 2x12 combo (that amp previously belonged to Kevin Cadogan, founding member and original guitarist for Third Eye Blind) and that pair is really magical. The amp is basically a super-rare hot-rodded Mark I reissue and it really brings out all the nuances of the Super Tap 6 pickups. Great demo man!

Nice playing man , May i ask what are these roughly worth now ?

Dear Richard, well, they are becoming rare. I think I payed 110 euros for it, ten years ago. I'd say, somewhere between 100 and 200 euros would be fair.

Wonderful instruments, and really enjoyed your playing here. Wish we could see more of what you're doing with the tri-sound switches. I bought mine 15 years ago as the dream guitar for a Peter Green obsessive but have drifted towards country styles and it's got a fantastic twang . My example has a A80XXXX serial so is a little over a year younger than yours; I believe they started calling them AR300's by then and soon changed some components and then the body, over the course of 1980, but my old lady is pure AR2619. They're like three guitars in one; two world class ones and one shite one. Two thoroughbreds and a donkey, having fun together in a field.

My first bass was the single-pickup version of this bass. Passive Dimarzio P-Bass with a 32" scale. I played plenty of gigs in the mid 80's with it. I had it converted to left handed. It was a great bass. I wish I still had it.

Really got character with that pop. My new dream guitar. Yamaha is high quality, with none of the cult-like brand loyalty, which makes it cooler than the cool brands.

I have a black lacquered one. I gut out the bridge pup and put in a Gotoh humbucker. Rosewood fingerboard, scalloped. It's in pieces right now 'cos the whammy bar wore through and literally broke off. I have a new one, but haven't installed it yet because it'll need some extra routing. A big difference is that mine came with locking tuners and locking whammy bar (the one that broke). I think it's a 1982 model, so that might be why the differences in coating and hardware. One thing I remember from it - under distortion, it is super smooth sounding. Can't wait to (eventually) bite the bullet and get the bar replacement finished haha.

Wow - that's made my day! - I have exactly the same model and they are rare enough in Tobacco Burst (the only other option on this specific model) let along Natural which this one and mine are. I bought mine many years ago and this is the first time I have ever seen another in Natural finish. OK, so these are not actually the Bobcat but simply the RS Standard which I think may have only been made in 84 as other models were far more popular - these were the bottom of the line and the only model in the series with: 3 single coils like a Strat, Strat style knobs for tone and volume, and just "Made in Japan" on the plate. There were many others in the series (Bobcats, Wildcats, Stray Cats, The Cat- which I once owned one of, and others like Warriors, Inazumas, and too many to think of) which had more technical bridges (Floyd style) and electronics/switching and often humbuckers. Mine has a body made from 4 pieces and as you say no effort to hide the fact. Mine has a huge amount of natural relicing to the fingerboard and neck (from my playing) and to the body (from my clumsiness) and looks all the cooler for it. The changes I have made (apart from re-fret, replaced worn saddles, better string tree etc) were to stick a very powerful DiMarzio humbucker in the bridge position with appropriate pot (250k maybe?) and a 5 way switch as for whatever reason these only came with three. I've never had a trem arm in it and it stays in tune well. The guitar is awesome in my opinion - such a smooth and sweet neck, in neck and middle position through a Fender amp it couldn't be told apart from a very good Strat, though I mainly use the humbucker i put in it and dirt through amps for my music. For the past 7 years it has been my main gigging guitar whilst others worth much more stay in their cases much of the time. These things rock and are great value!!

Thank you for response. I like the guitar a lot. The only con is the three way switch.

The ONLY relevant bit would be the sound through the amp. Unfortunately you are miking the room, which means we can hear what the guitar sounds like acoustically too. WHICH IS IRRELEVANT since that is NEVER heard on a recording or by the audience. Truth is that it makes no difference whatsoever. None. Period.

Sounds warmer with the brass . The steel replicates the brighter tones. They both sound good. If I were playing country, I would stay with steel the brass you would have a wider range of music to go with all types . But in the end just boils down to preference.
