33:49 he forgot to mention when Apple "technicians" glued a piece of rubber onto a chip that was soldered with solder the consistency of silly putty, instead of actually fixing the root issue.

Very interesting interview! I do my part as a small business owner to tell others how important it is that we are able to repair our own devices. Yesterday I worked on a customer's laptop replacing the HDD with an SSD, in a 2015 laptop. After the replacement the laptop was WAY faster and that surprised the customer that a 9-year old laptop still had so much performance to offer. Me and the customer got to the conversation about repair, and I told them that it was getting more and more difficult to do these kind of repairs on newer devices since parts gets soldered or they aren't designed to be opened up at all. I always point to Apple devices for being the worst to repair. But I never try to push anyone in a certain direction. But it at least gives others some food for thought. Maybe they will remember it next time they need to buy a new laptop or other device and ask or search online on how repairable a brand or product really is.

@Louis Rossman - I had a chuckle each time you mentioned "move to a farm" to escape all of this, because even that is no longer an option these days. As you and Willie Cade have pointed out, now this FTC (f**k the consumer) mindset is even embedded in farm tractors. I guess the NEW "old adage" will be "Move to Mars"...but only for a short time between when Elon gets past the FAA gatekeepers, and when the only equipment the government stamps as "MCU Safe" (Mars Consumer Use) will be a rover that has monthly subscriptions for its various components and clearance through multiple gov't agencies. Imagine a rover assembled by John Deere, using a BMW motor, sporting Tesla solar panels and batteries, running an Apple touchscreen interface, with Samsung radio components using Activision's Ricochet anti-cheat program to phone home (through a Starlink account) and verify you've got EPA approval to drive it during the current lunar cycle, you're current with the IRS, the registration on your Goodyear "lifelong" self-repairing tires hasn't expired, and that all the monthly subs on the myriad components are still active. And then it still won't start because someone hacked your Spotify account and you can't verify the email address; even though music playing through the speakers isn't a necessity to plow your potato field.

[31:26] Not so convinced forcing Apple to abandon the Lightning connector is such a great thing. Forcing everyone to conform to ONE way of doing things is just another form of oppression. Ironically, how is anyone suppose to innovate if you are told you can’t do it differently… APPLE’s iconic 1984 commercial appears to be very much relevant today, forty years later, than it ever was before… Ultimately, it will compromise Apple’s walled garden security. We have purposely avoided the Android-scape, because it just seems like packs of stray dogs are roaming parks, and security is scarce… It’s a bit like telling all tech companies, they all have to wear the same school uniform. Sure they can embellish a little, but it’s basically the same core outfit… 🤔

Personally i hate how thin and sleek (and slippy) modern phones are. The first thing i do is put them in a big, bulky case to stop them breaking the first time they have the slightest fall.

I got a strange idea of making hardware hacking legal in some part of the world. So everybody who is interested in right to repair will be able to hack around and produce cheap spare parts.

Could name any number of failures regarding MCAS & the decision to not jtrain, but to basically keep the system secret. Not talked about is that runaway trim is not new. American pilots have dealt with it for decades. You grab the wheel, flip the switches to disengage and trim back by hand. Too many foreign pilots know how to "Operate" the aircraft, but lack the basic instinctive stick & rudder skills that pilots who have grown up in a country with a General Aviation heritage.

It is more than having self-control or not, even if you are not actively using your cellphone it is still listening, still harvesting data about where you are, who you are with, how you are driving, whether you are walking, etc etc. It is *so* *much* more than what we are actually doing and *more* what the technology is doing being tied to your identity. It will get even more serious when the AI technology is fully integrated into the data harvesting and coorelation and "models of inference" of those data points.

Oh yeah- and don’t forget that _____ has created global expectations of an increase in living standards. That is the goal right? Economy, health, etc. What should we say to them? How do you think they will respond to the answer ? But the expectation has already been set. And where are we locating the resources? And what does that say about our integrity and leadership?

Customers also need to understand that life has friction. If I get a dopamine pellet so fast- I may begin to expect all industries to conform to velocity standards that are unrealistic and not possible- which in turn creates waves for the other industries- but baking bread does not happen at such speeds- quality products and services maintain standards and are aware of the health of the ecosystem. Now put these capabilities in populations that have historically been ____. How do you think their leaders and/or users will respond with their new faster _____?

Would an official be elected or appointed? And instead of a G_ forum, how can a chain structure internationally be relied upon.. for example.. there is an amazing sport that has a regulatory body that experienced a scandal. That was a sport that does not necessarily rely on.. does this make sense?

I noticed several malpractice and inaccuracies in regards to the promotions and hypocrisy by Coffeezilla which have yet to be addressed, including in this interview where he promotes malpractice with unnecessary surgery. Thankfully, people will expose the problems with his medical inaccuracies and especially his antiChristian hypocrisy, which is a contrast to what he says in his Twitter page.

The 737 MAX MCAS discussion was really dissatisfactory. "This should never have happened" isn't good enough. The whole system of air safety is built on redundancies at every level, from physical sensors to the systemic/process level, so that WHEN (not if!) something that should never happen happens, it's caught many steps before the accident. This only works as long as management does not end-run the systems. Boeing's management did. The fact that just 2 things went wrong (no information to pilots about MCAS + faulty sensors) and that caused fatal accidents means the system *failed.* The Swiss Cheese Model of safety means you should have more layers of redundancy and checks - just 2 oversights shouldn't be enough to bring a plane out of the sky. And it rarely is! It was enough in Boeing's case due to the rot of Boeing's corporate culture.

I am starting to get AI fatigue and have found some clinical research very useful while understanding my own symptoms since they have been getting increasingly worse. Mentally it has become a struggle to interact with any AI system. I found some case studies on Amazon that have helped, still a struggle though.

In terms of when and how it started, I believe it was Apple. My first awareness was the iPod. I could replace the battery in my Creative Zen. My friend could not replace the battery in his iPod. That was the first time they had a big enough monopoly to lean in to their anti-consumer tactics. (A monopoly they got not by designing a better device but by preventing competitors buying the small harddrives, so their device had to be larger.) I swore off Apple then and there, and have never regretted it.

The thing is; Mercedes almost gone bankrupt because they build too good cars; customer base ended, no spare parts needed. What could they do? The issue of Right to Repair and durability of products has a root in business models. We would have to pay for durability and right to repair. How? Subscription? How do we incentivize it?
@jonathanloganmoran4 ай бұрын
Subscription model, clearly. You really think Apple isn’t already profiting significantly off those US$9.99/month iCloud Storage / Apple Music / etc. plans? Not to mention the absurd markup they bake into all their retail products… US$200 keyboards, anyone?
@grzegorzkapica79304 ай бұрын
@@jonathanloganmoran I think Apple's model is a bit unfair; they ask you to buy their devices and pay for subscriptions. While this could look like this; you subscribe, so you get a phone. May be some payment is needed, so people would not throw the phone into sand or against walls, but the majority should be payed with subscription.

25:13 there is a 1 excuse, and that being that smartphones are within EMF range of the user almost always, so a bad fix could literally induce cancer or some other illness. Granted, this is a rare case, and shouldn’t stop all the good aspects of right to repair, but I am 100% certain when right to repair goes through there will be some genius that repairs something and then the user will want to sue the manufacturer for damages of long term exposure to that bad repair. Again, it is a less than .0001% chance it will happen, but extrapolated over millions of users it will happen, and they will want to sue the manufacturer instead of the repair guy, and odds are that the manufacturer will have to pay that lawsuit to save face. There definitely should be pairing authentication to avoid these sorts of unjustified lawsuits, but the pairing shouldn’t be such that it legit bricks the software. It should be a simple 1 time message upon turning on letting the user know that manufacturer is no longer liable for potential lawsuits due to a repair that was done from a 3rd party. There is a sweet spot for these matters, for sure. It’s annoying that they take parasitic approach instead of the consumer friendly approach. 😓
@tom.m3 ай бұрын
Cars are far more dangerous and people are allowed to fix those. Automakers aren't going broke fighting lawsuits from people who went to a bad mechanic. This is exactly the kind of nonsense the manufacturers try to spread.
