Flint, I'm having trouble keeping the beat for long periods of time. When working on training the left hand, are there any left hand exercises that you recommend practicing more than others?
@flintlong2937
@flintlong2937 2 ай бұрын
Hey there, Bailey! There are classical exercises for strengthening the left hand, but I don't recommend them for boogie woogie. Here's what I did, and this is what I recommend: Do the left hand pattern by itself, no right hand at all for up to 3 minutes if you can. If you can't go 3 minutes, then go as far as you can, and the next time strive for a little longer, until you can do that particular pattern solid, no pauses or hesitation between chord positions, for 3 minutes. You may have to devote quite a bit of practice time to this for a couple of weeks to see improvement. We all had to do it! Haha. Now it's your turn! Haha. But seriously, this is the only way. In boogie woogie the left hand is more important than the right! You can experiment using a metronome. I did that and still do sometimes. (I'm working on a new stubborn pattern myself right now). Just for fun and experimentation a good thing to do is play the thing gently and super slowly and tell the muscles and nerves and fibers of your left hand to become accustomed to this new activity. Watch your hand intently, as you play the pattern in slow, slow motion, and see if maybe changing the way you hold your wrist or arm, might make it easier on the left hand to stay afloat. If you want this, you'll get it! Bailey, I'm so proud of you! Keep up the good work!. Boogie is hard at first. But the rewards are worth it. And always remember, "It's a Boogie Woogie World, Baby! Your friend, Flint

Hi Flint, I'm Loving your channel, I'm picking up some great tips. I have a question if that's okay. Your style of playing seems more like Rock n Roll/fast blues, compared to say Albert Ammons which sounds more 'jazzy' I guess. I know it all comes under the Boogie Woogie banner but it does sound different, I was wondering why that is. Could you explain please. Sorry I'm a beginner so trying to learn the details . Is it the notes you play in general or the straight rhythm in the bass left hand compared to swing style. Hope that makes sense. Thanks Jason
@flintlong2937
@flintlong2937 3 ай бұрын
That is a really great question, Jason, and you have to forgive what I know is going to be a lengthy reply. You nailed it man. I no longer play the way I did when I was young and would emulate Albert Ammons and those guys. Are you familiar with Otis Spann, the blues pianist? Check him out. I used to emulate him as well. But over time I started to develop a sort of jazzier more fluid style, probably as the result of playing swing and classical and popular songs, and I lost a lot of that real, traditional feel. There are two guys of KZbin that I just love the way they play that Albert Ammons type traditional feel. One is Dick Pitassy and the other one is Paddy Milne. These guys just knock me out. They are more solid than I am at this point, Another place where you're correct is, I played 50's rock n roll so much (Jerry Lee, Johnnie Johnson etc.) that I grew in that direction too. I think you nailed it, man. You must have a great ear! One thing I find myself doing in recent years, is tailoring my riffs and licks to sound like what a guitar or a sax would play. This is different than Ammons for sure, but I think it's kind of what your picking up on too. Anyway. if I can help you reach your oiano goals just let me know. My email is on the website: FlintLong.com And thanks for writing in! Your friend, Flint

Hey Flint, love the down to earth teaching you do. Going to try to keep this short. My grandmother showed me a couple of songs on the piano back when I was around 8 years old (ally cat and somewhere my love), I picked up the guitar at 14, played in bands as lead about 25 years ago, lost my left little finger in 94. Over time (years), I actually started getting better than I was will all 10 fingers. But by this time bands had started to become a thing of the past. But I continued playing to the cows. about 10 years ago I started picking up the piano. Taught myself chord positioning. Only a year ago I really got serious. As you stated, it takes time and practice and I just now am having big discussions with my left and right hands trying to get them to work together. In my head I replay some of your boogies and can see myself being coordinated. But as you know, reality sets in when you sit at the keyboard. BUT, with your laid back teaching, I am getting there, yes, at least once every 2 days I take the time and practice. Especially the left hand as I only have 3 fingers and a thumb on that hand and a little modification is warranted. Anyways, thank you again for your vids as This one I must have watched at least 20 times so far. WIll be getting all your products once the two hands start working together..lol By the way, I am 66 years old and stil remember the ally cat and somewhere my love music, just now I figured out the chords for them also. You take care and sorry for the long comment.
