Very cool vid. I too own the Peavey VB-MA. I really love the amp. The only small gripe I have is that I don't find the distortion channel musical at all. Very disappointed in it. When I do play the amp I always just use the clean channel. I'm thinking that when the time comes to get it serviced I might just have the 12ax7 in the distortion channel replaced with a 12au7 to maybe try to make it like a second clean channel - something I can use. Any tips?
@Bassguitarist19858 күн бұрын
@@aldito7586 Awesome man! A 12AU7 is very low gain at 20mu. I find a mid gain 12AX7 works best, usually 85-95 mu. You can also try a 5751 which is essentially a low gain 12AX7 with about 70mu. What do you have in there now? If you have JJs, they will sound sharp/harsh. EHX or Sovtek will be smoother. V1 handles the Clean/Overdrive, V2 handles the Overdrive/Blend when using the blend. What cab you using with it? Cheers!
@aldito75865 күн бұрын
Good question. I have had the amp for about 3 years. I'm assuming it's all stock tubes. No issues with it. I actually dig it so much that I rarely play it. Kinda like that really cool classic car you always wanted. You're not going to drive it to work everyday. The clean channel is great. Very warm. This amp just oozes quality. Even the control knobs have that quality feel to them.

Our generator has a problem but dont know how to fix it. When it has things connected it spontaneously does like BRRRMMM very loud like is accelerated then everything connected to it resets. Also it starts surging. I think is it realated with what you said about your gripe with inverter generators cause i moved the switch a little bit and the surging was gone nonetheless it is frustrating when it does the BRRMM thing & resets everything.

EL84's don't run hot, the circuits and the schematics run them at 100+ % their normal spec. Most bias range for amplifiers are the 50-65% range of the tubes spec. Almost all EL84 circuits run them well over 100% of their spec. Which is why most EL84 logos begin to discolor over a shorter period of time. Having a normal bias range for the tubes reduces the excessive heat. Installing that fan is not needed with a normal bias range.
@Bassguitarist198513 күн бұрын
@@Vintage_375 thank you for your comment. Guess I need to check the bias and see how hot they are running. The classic 30 is a fixed non adjustable bias set via a resistor. If they really are running beyond 70% then that's not good.

@Vintage_375 I have a bias probe for EL84s. Now I'm curious...no red plating though
@Vintage_37512 күн бұрын
@@Bassguitarist1985 They don't have to always have to red plate when they're over biased around 100% of the spec of the tube. Generally red plating occurs when a component goes bad after a tube shorts permanently or temporary. (Which you diagnosed on your other video when you replaced the tubes and the hum went away.) - On the 90s version of the C30 it was generally C32 or C35 or R43 or R53. Then the tube will red plate because they're rated for 300-350VDC and if a Cap or Resistor fails and they receive 350-450 volts then they will red plate. - Another good thing to do, with the amplifier chassis out and access to the board. Read the Resistor Color Codes and measure every resistor on the board you have access too and make sure none have drifted. I don't suspect that to be the case. I completely expect they are all within spec but you never know, always good to check and doesn't take too long. As I've stated previously almost every single company that has a EL84 circuit build never correctly bias EL84s within a normal range. If you want to check out a YT channel called Psionic Audio an amplifier tech from Memphis who is a great teacher and has a lot of high quality amp repair videos on YT. Other great channels. Brad's Guitar Garage / Forgotten Gear Restoration / Headfirst Amps / The Guitar Amp Tech / Rift Amps. All are fantastic channels with high quality content.
@Bassguitarist198510 күн бұрын
Plate voltage is 332 volts, bias is -14 volts. Ideally 70% dissipation should be about 25 mA per tube. I'll have to put the bias probe on one day and check it out. The fan definitely keeps the heat from going up into the control panel though still a worthy mod.

@@willgammage8032 my pleasure! A side note, make sure you remove the 10k resistors that tie pin 8 suppressor of the power valves to the bias supply. If you get a shorted tube it will burn those resistors and potentially take out your bias supply which can then in turn blow up the whole set if you don't notice it in time. I got mine in time, but passing the info along.

It’s XLR to 1/4 Jack yes but I don’t know about matching impedance? I wasn’t aware that connecting leads needed to be concerned with impedance? Thank you 🙏
@Bassguitarist198522 күн бұрын
@@willgammage8032 an XLR is a low impedance output and the return of the effects loop is a high impedance. They do make XLR to TS wires where pin 3 is disconnected in order to drive an unbalanced input/output but signal level is lost by doing this. Shure makes an XLR/TS matching transformer but it's normally used for microphone so it has a decent low frequency roll-off. The other option is to use a small sub mixer. Connect your XLR line out to the input of the mixer and then send the output of the mixer going to the return of the VB-2. This allows you more flexibility in the adjustment of the signal.
@willgammage803222 күн бұрын
I have a VB2 here in the UK; the previous owner was selling it cheap as the sound was awful but after changing all the valves it sounded great! I would like to ask a question though please? The effects loop return socket is supposed to route straight into the power section. When I take a line out from my Fender TV 10 combo and plug it in; nothing happens. Except that plugging in kills the signal from the VB2 preamp which I’m sure it’s designed to do. Am I missing something? The TV 10 PSU appears to have failed and here in the UK, I’m being told that it cannot be repaired and the only way to use it is with the rear line out socket. Thank you.
