thank you for this. I remember TOP DECK TRAVEL, ENCOUNTER OVERLAND, EXODUS, DRAGOMAN et al. i went on this trip in 1987, it took about 5 or 6 months. it was a wild trip, exhilerating, exciting, a bit overwhelming at the time. i was not that well prepared unfortunately. great memories. thanks.

a time lost forever through greed and war, It wasn't that long back either, I remember seeing the Magic Bus adverts in NME and thinking I'll do that when I leave school Then the whole area erupted into war, Iran Iraq, Lybia etc. thanks to the CIA and its "foreign policies"

You talk about the sacred Ganges, but you don't say where it is. People watch documentaries to learn things. Where the fuck is it? It used to be called Benares. Now it's called Varanasi. Mention some facts, while you are talking.

I get the feeling that this was a sales tool for the tour company. Just a little too upbeat, a little too "come along and have jolly good fun!", which, considering what the near future held, is rather chilling.

Trevor, I'm looking for a particular picture. 1983, Club Habitat, Kirchberg. Lots of people took a pic and, I'm hoping that somebody sent one to you. I'm 6'5'' and Joanne Maloney was 6'1". I suggested that she stand on my shoulders to clean the upstairs windows. She got up on a wall and then, transferred over to my shoulders. I walked slowly to the bus and, she cleaned the windows. Rob and Magoo were the staff. Magoo got Joanne pregnant and, blew her off when she went back to OZ. It should have made a great pic.

@@trecarr It is REALLY sad that Dillon picked a completely incompetent mate to fix the buses. Top Deck America could still be in business if not for that one choice. There is heaps to see here and, our roads are wide. I worked on the buses in exchange for an Overland trip. Dillon was really wrapped over Shelly. I also have to blame London for sending him over if he didn't have a good history. When I drove the bus, it was a wreck. It smoked so bad, I had to pull out of the carpark and, wait 20 minutes for it to build up air pressure. The passengers had to push start it. It left oil & fuel puddles everywhere. The driver from OZ got kicked out at the border of Canada and, I got promoted to driver. Fan blades through the radiator. Black courier (Snowflake) gave the girls herpes. I stay far away from social media.

Did the overland in '84 to Kathmandu. Yep, quite an experience. Also, drove for top Deck America for a couple of trips. Unfortunately, Dillon hired his mate as the shop mechanic for the American buses. They broke down so much, that London had to stop American tours. John Bremner took over mechanic duties but, it was too late. I did the U.K tour at about the same time that the eurozone killed the deckers. You can still run deckers in America. We have no M.O.T and, you can tun anything.

Back in 1988 i think, I also got a foto clicked in Jammu (India) with the bus that was returning from Kashmir. The bus has a tyre puncher and i was on my cycle going to school when i signed the driver that the tyre had puncher and the air was leaking. The bus followed me as i told the driver that i can take them to a tyre repair shop. The driver "Tim Bourke" and entire tourists inside the bus thanked me and clicked a foto of me with the bus in the background along with other members. I cannot see that pic here anyways.. great memories of that day...
