I will never forget my hippie trail in the mid seventies. Travelling through Afghanistan, we were so lucky. Staying in Kathmandu and walking to Everest base camp and Anapurna.

I took the trip from Bari, Italy but boat to Athens, Train to Istanbul, Ferry to the Asian train station, steam train to Tehran, Magic Bus from Tehran to Kabul, hitchhiked from Kabul to the India border. The van was impounded and I arrived in India with the clothes on my back. I took a train to Dehli and another to New Dehli. It was an adventure! Great memories. I made the trip back to Kabul two more times during my stay in India. 1976 was the year.

I get the feeling that this was a sales tool for the tour company. Just a little too upbeat, a little too "come along and have jolly good fun!", which, considering what the near future held, is rather chilling.

a time lost forever through greed and war, It wasn't that long back either, I remember seeing the Magic Bus adverts in NME and thinking I'll do that when I leave school Then the whole area erupted into war, Iran Iraq, Lybia etc. thanks to the CIA and its "foreign policies"

Which road are you taking? We recently hitchhiked from Finland to India. I can try to give some tips :)
@andrewstones29213 жыл бұрын
I’ve driven most of this route, but I’ve been through Burma and into Thailand instead of into Nepal. From London the best route is to nip down to Greece, through Turkey and Iran, you can get a handy ferry from southern Iran to Mumbai or just go overland through Pakistan, then up India and into Nepal. It’s all quite straightforward, don’t overthink it or over plan it. Depending where you are from you may not need a visa till you reach Iran, then visa for Pakistan and India or you can avoid Pakistan with a ferry. I’d say just get on and do it, you don’t need a fancy 4x4 though one is useful, ground clearance is useful and the ability to sleep in the vehicle in an emergency is useful too.
