The term 'A poor mans E-Type' was penned for the Triumph GT6 back in the day. Syd Enever, Chief Engineer at MG had long admired Aston Martins, and saw in the MGB with an addition of a fixed top, his 'Poor mans Aston Martin'. What the hell is going on with the design of the bonnet scoop in the MG you test, it's hideous! A few years back I owned a 1973 MBG GT, which started life as a 4-cylinder until 1979 when its then new (second) owner dropped in a 3.5L V8 from a Rover SD1 and its LT77 5-speed gearbox. I bought the car off him in 2006 and it was an excellent conversion, he was a gifted engineer as well as a serving RAF pilot (he flew English Electric Lightnings back in the day). The MG outperformed the factory V8s (at a fraction of the cost) and was a wolf in sheeps clothing, no V8 badges and running on its factory rostyle wheels, so it looked like a bog standard GT until you turned the key and then everyone looked up.

At least these Capris were legit 4 to 5 seaters which were fast and reliable. Compared to many cars who claim 2+2 config but do not fit rear seat passengers comfortably, like Porsches. I myself owned a 1977 Ford Escort Brenda 1600 twin weber and la 1979 Escort RS2000X in signal orange. How I miss those cars.

What a charming little car! I think both the exterior and interior designs are pleasing. I find Italian design flair is often successful. The Smiths instruments are great and that full width shelf must be very useful.

What a fantastic car. Looks even better in this pale blue. Give the engine configuration and layout, I wonder of a Saab 900T16 engine swap would work. A 175bhp 1300 would be awesome.

Hi Joseph, from the depths of winter in Christchurch New Zealand. Watching your post, of this most beautiful, of Triumphs 1300, brought back wonderful memories of my great Uncle Bob, who proudly owned a 1300 Triumph. He allowed me to drive his beauty around the Cheshire countryside in 1981, on a holiday from New Zealand. Watching your post, brought back such fond memories of that time, I so enjoyed reconnecting to my family at that time. Infact, Triumph cars became an obsession & now I am the proud owner of a 1977, Triumph 2000TC with power steering & overdrive. Thank you Joseph for your most enjoyable post.

These were well designed cars at the time,i always liked them.puts me in mind of a couple of rare cars from kia around the same era,kia was regarded with some suspicion at this time although the pride had been not a bad seller theyr'e larger cars were seldom seen ,the mentor and the clarus.for some reason i think they were only sold in northern ireland and ayrshire dealers but i may be wrong.

I think the front lamps, indicators and grill let down the styling of these, otherwise I think they look quite good. I think back in 1975, not everyone was on board with a hatchback for this size of car, so it's understandable why it stayed as a saloon. Cortina was saloon/estate only. Cavalier was saloon only, although there was a 2-door sports hatch.
@lloydvehicleconsulting9 сағат бұрын
Some people prefer the front end of the Princess, I think. As you say, hatchbacks for larger cars were not very common when the 18-22 Series was launched in 1975, although they started to become much more common within just a few years.

Lovely evening of Classics. Starring the Austin Healey 3000 . Such a classic sports car design. The TR7 and TR8 are the 1970s interpretation of the genre. My Dad's Uncle owned a cream coloured Mercedes Benz 190 Fin Tail in the mid 1970s . That was a glorious car.
@lloydvehicleconsulting18 сағат бұрын
Sir, we did like that Fintail Mercedes very much indeed, didn't we?
@roygardiner2229Күн бұрын
They certainly were interesting to me. All the sports cars were appealing. 3:20 MGB with that roof: I have never seen one like that. I think the 3:56 Mini Clubman would be very nice for me. Small, cute and more practical than the Mini saloon. Morris Minor convertible at 4:31 is just charming. Of course! The Triumph TR7 at 6:20 is a pleasing shape but I understand they were poorly manufactured. That is a pity, Its dashboard instruments look to be numerous and impressive. The TR3 right next to it is more classy. The Rolls is superlative.... . enough said. I feel guilty about not "liking" Porsche cars. They obviously are beautifully engineered but they are too Teutonic for my taste. What IS to my taste is the Daimler at 13:15. Elegance, style, class. One might almost say, as Jaguar adverts did, "Grace, Space, Pace". The Wolseley at 14:30 might not have the above attributes but it certainly is charming. As is the MGTF right next to it. I have always liked the styling of the TF. 15:58 Austin 7. Dad either owned one or was very familiar with the model. I wonder how many here have seen a car started by hand-cranking: I HAVE because Dad did that with one of our cars. At 24:00 the Triumph Spitfire, with that hinged bonnet, must be so easy to work on, as for the Herald. I think it was a great design idea. Maybe other designers should do the same, 24:58 Jaguar XK150 classic. 33:11 MGB GT. Very nice! I have always preferred the GT's shape to the MGB roadster. 33:55 lovely Jaguar! It looks to be speedy. That was a smashing show. Lots of variety, lots of class, lots of interest.

Sir, there were a lot of nice cars there the other evening. I thought that you would be amenable to many of them. Everyone seems to have absolutely loved that Daimler, the owner is actually younger than me, as far as I could see. The first MGB you saw has what is called a "Bermuda" roof, which was normally optioned by MGBs from the 1960s.

Yes, as confirmed by the owner after I had finished recording! I know large parts of the script for that episode (which was in production exactly 57 years ago this week) and visited virtually every location used in it, so I knew the MGB had the start had one, I just couldn't work out what it was called. It looks slightly too old for this H plate car, for some reason, but on the earlier car in "Dead Man's Treasure", it looks better.

@lloydvehicleconsulting Speaking from experience, pre-1989 cars are better. Those early digital dashboards and electrical systems can give problems, but nothing Mr Coleman can't sort out, and of course, common rust spots. I've just removed a P reg 2.0 CDXi from the road, acquired as an accident damaged car and stripped for spares before being scrapped. The rear side windows in the C pillar are screwed in, held in place by plastic 8mm nuts. Breaking one up, they are extremely well engineered. Its a shame rot and the unobtainium ABS pumps cut the lives of them so short. I'm looking forward to getting my 1.8CDi on the road as soon as i can.

Oh yes, if the ABS pump fails, it is pretty much the end, isn't it? Even this one has a very tiny bit of rust, but Laurence keeps on top of it, so it will keep going for a long time to come.
