We have to fit one to our yacht. We have had a ridiculous quote to get this done. However, does it matter where the tank is located on the boat?
@bottomline4284
@bottomline4284 3 күн бұрын
Main considerations i had were: above or below water line, and distance from the toilet. I opted for above water line so a gravity drain to the sea was an easy option vs having to pump the tank out. I did install a deck fitting to allow shore-side pump out. Close to the toilet means less piping and probably less water required to move the waste which means it takes longer to fill the holding tank. On the same type of boat I know of people who’ve installed tanks under v-berths so I guess to an extent it comes down to space available and then adapting the design from there. Lots of info on the web more technical than my explanation. All the best with your install!

Well I commend their strength and ability, but this wasn't really reefing on the run. Heading up into the wind is naturally the thing you'd rather do, but if the seas are too large heading into the wind may be unwise. Then what do you do?
@bottomline4284
@bottomline4284 11 күн бұрын
Fair point. Getting the sail down full of wind would be very difficult. Reinforces intent of video that it’s always best to reef early while you can. Coming up just enough to spill the wind rather than directly into wind and waves also helps. I’ve read some articles about low-friction track systems such as Tides Marine that purportedly enable this to be done. A future investment perhaps. Ultimately if I was expecting large seas and constant wind over 30kts I’d consider getting the main down early and just using the staysail. Thanks for the comment.
@stephenburgess626
@stephenburgess626 12 күн бұрын
Why not just a little bit of genoa out only and No main up for downwind? Did you have main up for better balance?
@bottomline4284
@bottomline4284 12 күн бұрын
Hi Stephen. For sustained sailing in strong winds I’d normally use the staysail. I’m always wary of “a part furled” genoa” in strong winds long term. Inefficient sail shape on the wind and if the furling line breaks or slips, you are left with a handful. On this occasion I had not rigged to soft stay for the staysail so opted for main only. It is quite a manageable sail plan on the Northshore 38. A third reef is available if the winds go even higher.

Nice vid thanks. Just one question - why so little backstay when there is so much wind loading up the caps and lowers?
@bottomline4284
@bottomline4284 7 күн бұрын
The NS38 is a fractional rig with swept spreaders and stays. We tend to only use the backstay when sailing hard on the wind to bend the mast top aft and put some extra tension on the forestay.
@Wauquiez48Pilot
@Wauquiez48Pilot 7 күн бұрын
@ ok never had a fractional rig, but on my Bermudan sloops I believe the loads on the caps and lowers are kept under control with moderate backstay tension in marginal conditions. Thanks for the insight 👌

Your NS 38 is magnificent. Thanks for sharing some good crew work too. Noticed something I'm curious about between 7:25 - 7:35 while running with the poled-out headsail - wondering what the second, outer red coloured sheet to the end of the whisker pole is? Pardon my ignorance - trailer yachtie here so our rigs are slightly less complicated ! Cheers, Gavin
@bottomline4284
@bottomline4284 13 күн бұрын
Hi Gavin. Outboard sheets are used when on a broad reach or downwind for two reasons: 1. They give better exit angle to the headsail, and 2. They run from a block on the gunwale outside the lifelines. The standard Genoa sheet would be pressing down on the top lifeline - not good for the lifeline nor chafe on the sheet.
@TrailerYacht
@TrailerYacht 13 күн бұрын

Thanks for the feedback. Good question re long term resilience. I’ve taken this approach having read reports of the marine industry on the east coast (Australia) using VHB tape and no screws in many new build boats. The commercial building industry also use it even for skyscraper windows. The new windows on this boat have lasted three complete seasons (summer and winter (cruising and racing) with no adhesion issues or leaks. Time will tell I guess. Cheers

I've just tried this on one of four windows I need to sort out. Only difference was I used sikaflex. After a week of installation, I'm seeing a problem. Where the sika flex meets the VHT painted surface, it is causing the paint to separate from the Perspex. This is happening up, so difficult to explain fully, but it seems that the sikaflex is reacting with the paint. No problem on the bond between VHB tape and paint though. I used 291i because I had a tube and was waiting for 295uv to arrive. Maybe this is the difference, but I think this first window is going to fail.

@john Wilde Can you follow-up on the other windows you did? I will be installing new windows later this year and I want to know if the sikaflex was the problem or the paint you used?
@johnwilde4953
@johnwilde4953 Жыл бұрын
@@jordimuller8521 hi. So I did complete all of the other windows, but I decided to sand back the painted surround where the sikaflex was going to be applied, allowing it to create a seal directly on to the Perspex - but left it where the VHB was bonding to retain the UV protection. I used black 295uv for this and from the finished side, it was almost impossible to see the difference between the unpainted sikaflex and painting area. I went back to the first window and scrapped out some of the sika from the worst areas and reapplied it - this time using 295uv. For that first window I was using white sika 291i and I still think this reacted with that VHT paint. Having said that, it and all other windows have been water tight. They have survived the flexing while the boat was craned back in in April and I've been for a couple of sails. However, should note that my standing rigging attaches to the hull stringers, so don't apply much load to coach roof. Also- the coach roof my boat is pretty stiff (being old 80s lay-up). So far I am very happy with. Just having no leaks it nice.
