Thanks for sharing. I've watched most of your videos having bought a boat earlier this year (from CYC now out of RSAYS) and look forward to emulating some of your trips. I'm a long way off of single handed berthing but that's the aim eventually. Hope to see you out there some day soon. cheers. Oki Doki

Thanks Glenn. Appreciate the feedback. South Australia is a great cruising environment (even over winter) for just about any type of yacht. Trust you are enjoying the boat. Cheers

Very nice video. A few questions: I've never seen a boat go so well in reverse. Do you have a saildrive or shaft drive? Also, does your wind generator keep up with your electical demands when sailing with the auotpilot on? Thank you for your responses.

Hi Ron. Thanks for the feedback. The Northshore 38 is shaft drive (upgraded to a 30 HP Yanmar and 3 blade Autostream folding prop). It has prop walk that pushes stern to port when in reverse. Where practicable, I try to use this to my advantage so you’ll see that I generally go into reverse while turning to port to position the boat. This way the prop walk helps arrest the stern which is moving to starboard as the boat is turning, and if timed well, leaves me starting to move aft (ie with steerage) when I’m roughly lined up with stern facing intended direction of travel. If I have to go into reverse at the end of a narrow marina bay, the normal considerations of leaving room to compensate for the effect of wind on the bow (blowing off) and making allowance for prop walk apply. The boat tracks and steers well as long as you keep some way on her eg into a berth but applying forward power to stop the boat requires consideration of how the wash will interact with the rudder ( which is reasonably large, balanced on a semi-skeg immediately aft of the prop). Eg if the stern is drifting to away from the pontoon as I’m wanting to stop the boat (ie still moving astern), logically I’d turn the wheel the direction I want the stern to go. There is a changeover point though where the effect of the prop wash against the rudder will be greater than the movement through the water and the wheel needs to go the other way so as to use the prop wash against the rudder to push the stern towards the pontoon. The wind generator is adequate for the Raymarine wheel pilot but the sea state is often minimal. I’m in the process of installing a Triton2 AP with T1 hydraulic ram so will see how the battery holds up with more powerful AP in harsher conditions. I may need to consider an extra battery or possibly make the move to Lithium Ion (deeper discharge etc).

Pros and cons of the ‘38? Very nice video, thanks for sharing

Hi Peter. The NS38 has more pros than cons. This is what the reviews say www.boatsales.com.au/editorial/details/northshore-38-used-boat-review-8764/ but Bill Hatfield’s story says it all! www.sail-world.com/news/227568/WSSR-confirms-Bill-Hatfied-records

Hope you get back out on the water soon! There is a Northshore owners group on FB facebook.com/groups/NorthshoreOwnersGroup/?ref=share with lots of information and the occasional boat for sale (See 5 Sep for a recent NS38)
