Diabolical ironclad beetle 🤝 deathwatch beetle 🤝 Thorny Devil stick insect Cute bugs with dramatic common names. The first one looks like a chunk of asphalt grew little legs to wander around. It is so stupidly durable that it can be run over by a car and remain unharmed- the US military is actually researching it for combat vehicle applications. They’re somewhat popular as pets among beetle keepers, and there’s actually a morph that’s even more ridiculous: the Hellburnt diabolical ironclad beetle. The second is a little beetle that makes a distinct knocking sound as a form of communication. Contrary to superstition, hearing that knocking does not actually serve as an omen that someone in your family is about to die. It can, however, indicate that there are little guys eating your house if it’s made of wood- they ARE wood borers, after all, and can cause some serious structural damage if a group isn’t dealt with. They’re otherwise entirely harmless, though. The last one is a stick insect that, while indeed “thorny” in that its exoskeleton has spikes for camouflage and defense, is not any more sinful or prone to getting into arguments with the shoulder-dwelling angels than other bugs. I actually get to work with these semi-regularly thanks to now volunteering at my university’s bug petting zoo of sorts; as slow-moving herbivores, they’re completely harmless(unless you’re a leaf), though if you’re not used to handling bugs their grippy tarsal claws might take some getting used to. The second is a type of wasp that was given that scientific name as a joke. I could’ve listed the many bugs named after celebrities but they’re not really that funny.
