NO ONE gets this: Pete doesn't like slit skirts. He see's them as antithetical to romance. So while Pete is lamenting a fading relationship, he's also praising Jeanie for not being immodest. "Jeanie wouldn't dare wear those slit skirts" "Jeanie wouldn't be caught dead in no split skirt" Another words Pete wants romance and he see's split skirts as a sign of modern wo-MEN'S immodesty and something that's against romance. ANYONE?

First time I heard the original I thought , this would be a tough one to pull off live. Pete does a great job, surrounded by an extraordinary supporting cast.

" and I know that when she thinks of me She thinks of me as 'Him'. " -damn that is such a devastating line! I LOVE this song - kinda weird with the horns when you're used to the album version.

At 34 he was writing about getting old. I guess he had been through a lot by that point. The lyrics didn't resonate with me until late 40's.
