I come back to this song and this version over and over for peace tranquility relief inspiration transcendence and to just feel good after a few beers. This is better than any studio version could ever be. And as a guitar player of feel.... those slides made me hard as a rock in winter😊

Thanks for your comment @DRUMNIdotcom . The instrument has many different names across West Africa - most commonly 'gonje' or 'goje.' Since this was filmed in Mamprugu (north east region of Ghana) I spelled it the way the Mamprusi spell it, which is 'gongyi." Mampruli has a different orthography than Dagbani (spoken by their more populous tribal siblings) which spells it 'gonjey' or 'gonje'

@@DRUMNICOdotcom This traditional northern Ghanaian festival is based on the lunar calendar so it shifts forward by ~10 days every Roman calendar year. Coincidentally, Damba coincides with the Islamic holiday commemorating the prophet Mohammed's birthday (Mawlid), so it is relatively easy to identify when it will occur on a given calendar year. 2020 was October 29th, but 2024 will be September 15th. If you attended in 1999, it should have been around June 26th.
