-- About the Caves of Nok, Mamproug, Kouba, Bagou and Tusik --
High cliffs, whose walls face north, tower over the savannah of this northern part of Togo. They are the last high reliefs before the immense expanse of savannah which extends into Burkina Faso. This formation commonly called the Gambaga Escarpment features open crevices at the upper last quarter of their height. Difficult to access, they served as shelter and refuge for the indigenous populations during periods of various insecurities that plagued the region from the 17th to the 19th century.
These caves contain granaries carved in the same traditional architectural style from local materials (stones, clay and straw). Cylindrical, oblong or semi-spherical in shape, they open upwards, their height is usually two and a half meters, their diameter is three meters.
