I am a beginner with a 10-inch dob that I got brand new out of the box the other day and put together. all the collimation videos I have watched all tell something different. so how does a beginner know they have or are doing the correct thing.? now I see here you have to centre spot the secondary. if so, then why don't new telescopes come with that done for us? what about scope with no centre dot on the primary like a 130 solo-mark? now it gets difficult for a beginner, so what is the correct easy way? One says to tighten the screws on the secondary one says to loosen or tighten one then do the opposite with the other two screws one states to loosen the middle screw oh yeah and I nearly lost my secondary down the tube onto the primary.. so where is the easy method.. ? one video had me loosen off the primary mirror that the screw and spring went into tube. what is the home position of the mirrors as a starting point?

What sets New Moon apart from everyone is that there telescopes are made from the expert woodworking who making the best joints and understand orthogonal and dimensional stability. If make rocker box then dovetail and rabbit is best. I use to have the Webster and it was almost perfect except way to heavy. But heavy scopes has advantage of holding collimation for f 4 mirror which is must for fast optics. The New Moon telescope is better because of using modern mirror cell and looks not heavy. But Webster dovetail joint is probably equal to the New Moon dovetail. And I admit New Moon is more nice looking. But if pushing is the shove I will choosing Webster only because there contracting with best optics made from Zambuto and Steve and Lockwood. This is the most important the optics and then wood joints. My now scope is Obsession and still feels new for made in 2008 lol

Greetings. Though this video is 10 years old, we still make this little tabletop version, but the current model has numerous improvements. One, it is made out of solid wood and is more rigid while being lighter in weight. Typical lead time is 9-12 months for a scope-however, we actually have an 8”F4 tabletop in stock. I can send any type of image you’d like. Just email me at [email protected] if you are interested. Thank you, Ryan

Nowhere to mount alt encoders on those trunnions. I like the short mirror box. Thinking of rebuilding my 16 with a shorter one. That way I can put a baffle just above the mirror that will direct the air from a rear mounted fan over the surface to remove the boundary layer. Eliminates the need for side fans and gives a more even flow. I like a double ring uta but I think I will make a new one that's shorter as well.

I have an 8in dob that I need to clean but I really don’t want to have to deal with taking the mirror out of the holder and soaking it in a tub. Will this method work on an 8in dob?

@@goe2112 I decided against this method because my dob came with a mechanical fan attached to the bottom of the mirror casing. I do not want to risk damaging that with water

This is the advice I wanted. If it works, I'll try it! The towel laying below the mirror, I think is important. I recently bought a 10 inch Skywatcher Dobsonian . A light shower recently got water spots on it. Open truss, but need to reach down about 15 inches. I'm surprised how quickly the mirror got dirty. I'm wondering how "anal" I really need to be about cleaning? How dirty is too dirty?

What an interesting design! I was looking at getting a 28" dob and I asked the maker if they could do it as a Naysmyth and they said if I could get someone to do the optics they could do the rest. Now I'm thinking I do it like this and I just need a large enough well for the main body of the tube to sit in and have an elevated rotating floor which would be the observing deck. Hmmmm....

The first mirrors I made I followed this classic book: "How to Make a Telescope" by Jean Texereau They were usable, but not great. I then went to Vermont and took a class with the Springfield Telescope Makers. Some of these guys and gals are the best resources on earth for making mirrors. I've made several mirrors, and it's very rewarding, but I have not and could not make a mirror that equals the quality of the opticians I use for our telescopes these days (Fullum, Zambuto, Lockwood, Ostahowski). I focus on the structures these days, and leave the optics to the pros!

12"F4 is the only size that makes sense for us (for the time being). Larger sizes, in theory, would work just fine, it's just finding the time to dedicate to prototyping one up, improving upon it, etc... Thanks for asking. Ryan

anodized aluminum does not "chip" because the coating is not a coating per se, but a chemical process that etches the alumnium.
