Isn’t it easier just to make a new player for clarinet in A.
@homayoontv15 күн бұрын
Hmm, depends but not really since you have to do many extra steps, copying the score, removing the old clarinet, adding the new one. Etc.

I change it sometimes to help me compose, it's really fun too. Go to engrave mode, then engrave options, when the window is open look for note coloring. Let me know if you needed more help.

If I want to send a file to a fellow musician does he have to have Dorico?
@homayoontv25 күн бұрын
If you send it as musicXML no, but if you send it as a Dorico file extension then yes.

@homayoontv2 ай бұрын
It really depends, if this sort of ear training and improving your ears ability to hear music help you to understand music better, for example analyzing orchestral music, polyphonic textures or better grasp of chords and their functions, then I would say certainly it would help and it is quite needed. But if you see it very seperatly as a way to improve your compositions then no. My suggestion is that you should work on different things, your technique, solfeggio, analysis, orchestration, etc. They all will act like a chain and together they will unlock your potential. Hope that was clear and thanks for subbing, if you have any questions please don't hesitate to ask.

Great video! Personally with modal music, I think it really depends on the amount of accidentals and modulation. If you're not wandering in and out of different modes, or in other words playing diatonically within that mode, I think it would still be safe to go with the nearest key signature which represents the amount of sharps or flats in the piece. Take something like C# Dorian, or Bb Phrygian - I would rather see the key signatures of B or Gb respectively than look at accidentals on practically every single note, and trust that musicians will understand the modal intention when scanning the piece. If you were handing a piece to be performed/recorded by an orchestra with limited time for rehearsal, especially for all the inner voices, in the case of C# Dorian I would rather them think their part is in B or or G#m so their fingers know where to go without worrying about it being in Dorian or not, vs. having them sight-read 5 sharps especially on any fast moving parts (maybe not as important for players who are always handed no key signatures like horns). As for their case maybe knowing it's a modal piece could influence their understanding and appreciation of the music but in a sight-read it's maybe not so essential for them to understand this. But of course if you're doing all kinds of modal mixture then and modulations then I would totally agree, no key signature is ideal, and this is usually what I do. That Ligeti piece is wild that it was an "etude" haha. Pretty cool idea for exploring polytonality!

Thank you for sharing your insights on modal music! It's always interesting to hear different perspectives. The thing about understanding music, in our case the difference between modal and tonal space is sometimes so closed up that it really surprises you, for example a few years ago I was looking for analysis of the same piece by Satie and then the first google searches were all wrong! They analyzed it like a tonal piece which would not make sense at all. OMG the Ligeti piece is really wonderful and well written! Glad you liked the video :)
@jonathanwingmusic2 ай бұрын
@@homayoontv It's interesting what you say about the Satie piece, I've played that one for years and had to dust off my version from the shelf to see what it says and how I had analyzed it previously. This one definitely shows 2 sharps. I think I've always seen it as still in D major, with a primary chord vamp established in the beginning as Gmaj7 to Dmaj7 / IV-I. I think coming from a pop and jazz background, this back and forth chord vamp made sense to me to think of it tonally as D-ish without the need of a traditional cadence of any kind. It's interesting to look again at the final bars, it sort of ends with a cadence but darkening up by naturalizing all the sharps and going from Am7 (with a really nice voicing) to Dm, which almost feels unfinished due to the absence of a leading tone there. I think that ambiguity and lack of finality is suitable for the piece and the mood it creates. That said because it still kind of revolves around D-ish as a center, I am not certain I would call it G Lydian. However, I don't think your perspective on that is wrong either. I think that's the wonderful and wacky thing about modal and tonal writing, there's such a gray area open to various interpretations, which makes the puzzle all the more fun - especially looking at any piece which starts off tonal and goes off into wild and wacky rides of modal mixture 🤪Anyway yes, I look forward to watching more of your content and analyses!
@homayoontv2 ай бұрын
@@jonathanwingmusic Thanks again for the reply, I would say one thing that really helps with understanding music when analyzing it is to also consider the melody as well, so maybe try it out on the piano to see if you hear a floating melody or a melody that has clear tonal start and end! But you are also right, the piece modulates toward other modes very gently!
@foleycomposer2 ай бұрын
Regarding a modal piece, such as the Satie you referenced, would it not be preferable in the idea of making it more playable to take a third option? Use the key signature of the closest major or minor scale (in this case G major) and use an accidental on the modal differences. Personally, I'd rather practice my modal scales more if I know a piece will use them, and keep the actual modal key signature, as Satie did, but that's a personal preference. As someone whose primary instrument is voice and keyboard skills are wretched, I don't have too much of a problem adapting to a mode.
@homayoontv2 ай бұрын
Thanks for the comment, I think that is also good possibility but perhaps even better if the special modal accidental comes really early in the piece so the musicians can immediately get that this piece is not tonal. It's really about each individual piece for me. and Indeed practicing modal scales really helps out!

Hi, you make great tutorials! I wonder if there is a way to use a key command just pressing one key for the most used 3:2 triplets. This is by now the only thing I miss from Sibelius in Dorico. The shortest one is ;+3 but still one click would be handy like the fabulous double click for dotted notes. Any idea?
@homayoontv5 ай бұрын
Hello, Glad you liked the tutorial and also thanks for the comment, for this you need to create a macro, you can use a software like Auto Hot Key or use a device like the Loupedeck which you can make macros inside of it. I have one its works like a charm. Give Auto Hot Key a go and let me know if you needed help, maybe I can cook a video for it.

Hi, Thanks for the tip. I'll take a look at it. With my DAW I use Streamdeck with great success but with my Macbook which I use for notation a lot I don't want an additional device to carry around. A video about Auto Hot Key certainly would be interesting.@@homayoontv

Great tutorial: I learned something!!! Thank you very much and keep doing these helpful videos for the whole Dorico Community! :-) Just as add-on as an expansion for more advanced users, if you write the dynamic with the 2 tied notes, you can also use shift+command (ctrl in windows) and left arrow twice (if your rhythmic grid is set to eight, or just once if your rhythm grid is set to quarter), to shorten the length of the selected dynamic.
