It's not that practical for visitors to do it yourself, its worth paying the extra and everything sorted, transport, hotels, entrances etc..

Safari travellers are usually mature people who have the right expectations, if you are a teenager or coming with infants you probably not gonna like it. Also, you can book a luxury hotel in the Maldives, but if the weather is terrible, 80% of your trip is ruined... It happens everywhere if you are unlucky.

We did a 16 day East African safari and it was as good as any Nat Geo show. We were up close with Lions, Black and White Rhinos, Leopards, Elephants, baby Hyenas, cheetahs, you name it. But the trick is to go to private conservancies and high end lodges and camps.If you do that you can go off road to get close to animals and there are hardly any other people around. If you do the mass market tours you will be stuck on a road with 50 jeeps watching a couple of lions. Not cheap but the best way to get that Nat Geo experience. Some highlights here kzbin.info/www/bejne/fZWpiJ1snLdrb5o

Someday I want to see someone wearing a Pith hat on safari, but this is all great information. And as someone commented before, most camps will have laundry service.

A mid range safari is absolute luxury and way more than enough. We just did a 4 day private mid-range safari in southern Tanzania for €1k per person. It was fantastic! We left generous tips at the lodges and for our driver who was wonderful.

I'm paying a lot of money and a great deal of trouble to get to Africa. I don't even like kids unless they are perfectly well-behaved and very quiet. If not you can be sure I will complain to the tour company vociferously and will do all I can to make the parents of that (those) children as uncomfortable as possible. Safaris are not for children in mixed company. If your children ruin my time on safari I'll do everything possible to ruin yours

Can I just say, as a semi-retired journalist, avid nature photographer and 20-year veteran of safaris throughout Africa's wildlife areas - in Kenya, Tanzania, Botswana, South Africa, Zambia, Zimbabwe and Namibia, sometimes with field biologists and wildlife conservationists - this is an outstanding video and should be required viewing in any and all travel offices selling pricey vacation packages to Africa's game parks. In under 10 minutes, you've covered the major points, with candour and honesty. And accuracy. I would add just one more caveat, though I don't know how useful it mightbe for most travellers: I've travelled both solo, with just myself and a guide (pricey, certainly), and in a group, and the problem with groups, even small groups, is that you don'ty get to choose your travel companions. All it takes is one fellow traveller, some guy who just won't shut up around animals (usually a guy, though not always) or, worse, somebody with unrealistic expectations who's not enjoying the experience and is unafraid to let others know, to ruin the experience for everybody. It's the luck of the draw, sure, but that doesn't make it any easier. A solo trip is worth the extra cost, if you can possibly afford it. Also, and this might seem obvious, though not always: choose a reputable company that's been in business for a while. It doesn't have to be big, it can be just a two- or three-person company, but experience and a proven track record counts for a lot. Trust me, you don't want to be stuck in a poorly maintained vehicle that's constantly breaking down - the last thing you want on an expensive, possibly once-in-a-lifetime safari is to be stuck on the side of the road, waiting for repairs that might or might not appear. It's not happened to me personally, but I've lost track of the number of times I've passed vehicles broken down by the road and the travellers always look profoundly anxious, and sad and disappointed. If you're a first-timer, pay attention to this video. I don't know this guy, or his company, but he's right/right/right.

Not a bad time. But it's sometimes rainy around then. Make sure you get a good tour company that uses Toyota Landcruiser tour vans. Many already do but you need to make sure just in case there is a possibility of rain. Either way, you will have an adventure of a lifetime. Come back here and tell us how it went.

Jambo rifiki. When I lived in Kenya (early 80's) all of the parks were free. I think it is a shame that they are charging so much to enter the parks. For a Canadian, this is extremely expensive. Some of the parks are upwards of $140 per day in Canadian dollars. This is a wealthy persons adventure now. Asante sana for your little tour.

Hi we did a 3 days Safari in Masai Mara a mid range tour in June 2024. The coast for this was 850 dollers per person . We were driven by our driver Mr Kikito who workes for Jocky Tours by the Toyota Land Cruiser. I prefer road trip. It took 6 hrs to our accommodation Jambo Mara Safari Lodge. The road trip was fascinating rather than bumpy roads. We were lucky enough to see all animals in one whole day Safari. As you mentioned, always keep money to tip and an experience driver is a must. I went through your video before and after my safari. It was very useful. Thanks

You don't go to safari on you own. You will need a guide and with equipment including a safari truck. A guide knows everything about safari including where to find the animals and the area. Professional photographers spent a lot of time and money looking for best moments to photograph. 😊

So there is mosquito proof clothing that will help against mosquitos but I am also considering trying this protect against tsetse flies. The thing is I know that impregnated clothing won't work because tsetse flies are resistant to the content but what about tight fabrics such as G1000 or more thick fabrics they can't bite through? Is there anything you could recommend? I really want to avoid getting bitten because Sleeping Sickness is a risk. And While getting bitten once isn't the end of the world getting bitten hundreds of times by different flies really does increase the risk..

Thank you for this video! Many safari content on KZbin are young adults up for adventures but I hardly find anyone talking about safari with young kids. I’m coming to Kenya this year with my 4-year old. I totally agree with your suggestions. I think it’s very important to find an agency or a tour that understands needs of young kids and family. I switched from Botswana to Kenya with advice of my agency, because my child cannot join a walking or a canoe safari in Botswana.

I have broken a few rules in African national parks. Everytime our jeep have had a flat tire I have left the car and changed it for a new one. When being harassed by baboons I have attacked the troop with machete and a small aluminium table as a shield. I have taken a leak during nighttime outside my tent with hyenas around. I have shouted at Cape buffalos to disperse when surrounding our vehicle. I have scared away predators by stomping in the ground and shouted. I have done a lot of other things also but everything have fulfilled its purpose without any problems.

What is the minimum reasonable price per person for a one week safari? Let's say that I've found some offers at 1.800 euros: is it definitely a scam, or is it a decent price for a group camping safari?
@EastAfricaTravelTips5 ай бұрын
It depends on a lot of factors so I can't tell you for sure unless I knew what the package contains. safaribookings.com can give you a ballpark figure of what to expect and the prices there should be considered the higher range since a local can negotiate for a lower price than what's quoted.
