Platforms for finding homestays/guest houses/spare rooms: @homestaycom - comment 'HOMESTAY' and I'll send you a link for €20 credit when you sign up @socialbnb @vegvisits @worldpackers - you have to work in exchange for accommodation @couchsurfing - similar to a homestay How to filter traditional booking platforms: @airbnb - filter by 'private room' only @bookingcom - filter by 'homestay' All others - look for words like 'guest house', 'inn', 'casa', 'lodge' - not all a guarantee but can be a good way to filter 🌱 If you're looking for 'ecohotels', look for 'above and beyond' measures like those mentioned in the video and certifications like B Corp/Fairtrade. ❌️ AVOID: International chain hotels if looking specifically for eco friendly as it is very rare they are really actively offsetting their measures even if they seem to have sustainability certifications. Most will be generating much more waste than they offset. Not the case for all but much more common than not sadly. ✔️Remember, true eco hotels are often surrounded by nature and may be more 'rustic' than you are used to. Likewise, locally owned homestays and guest houses may not have the uniform service of a chain hotel. What other tips do you have for finding sustainable accommodation? [Welcome to Sustainable Sundays 2.0! I'm Emma, and this is probably about episode 62 - let's say it is! Since I've been posting a Sustainable Sundays post for the last year and a bit but haven't always made it obvious. UK series: Happy Spooky Month 😅👻 [Follow for more local guides and off the beaten track travel] What better time to tell you all about one of our favourite places in the UK: Whitby! 🏰 Everyone knows about the so-called 'Dracula's Castle' in Romania (actually called Bran castle), but did you know that Bram Stoker (the author of Dracula) never actually visited Romania? The castle became synonymous with the legend because it looks surprisingly similar to the etching of Count Dracula's castle in the original novel, and the book was famously based on a Transylvanian Count! 🏰 🦇 Actually the castle Stoker described was based on Whitby Abbey, after he stayed in Whitby for a few weeks in 1890 in a guesthouse. Apparently he took inspiration for the count from a history book he read in Whitby public library and it all came together as he was watching the many bats fly around the Abbey one night. Gothic literature was in fashion at the time, so it was a perfect fit 🦇 🧛♀️ Vampiric activities you can do in Whitby [SAVE for your trip] 🦇 The Dracula Experience - a whole museum dedicated to the story! 🏰 Visit the Abbey itself between 10am and 5pm every day. The adjacent graveyard looks extremely atmospheric at sunset so you can combine with that at this time of year. Be warned - there's a LOT of steps to get to it! 👻 Take a ghost walk through town 🚶♂️ Take a hike (or a scenic drive) through the nearby Yorkshire moors to set the scene! ☠️ Take a pirate ship round the coast with the Captain Cook Experience 🍵 Head to the Abbey Steps Tearoom for a Dracula themed coffee stop 🧹 Stay in a witchy guesthouse with spider web four poster beds (Bats and Broomsticks Guesthouse) - honestly if you do anything, do this 😍 🍦 Try a Whitby Jet black ice cream, it's actually proper black! 🐋 Check out the Whitby Whale Bones - a spooky arch which frames the Abbey - the perfect spot for sunrise! Who's adding Whitby to their list? 👋👋 P.s. we save all our UK Hidden Gems to our profile guide so you can find them easily! #Whitby #Dracula #Vampire #BramStoker #WhitbyAbbey #Voiceover #Spooky #SpookySeason

@that_travel I didn't know that. I spend my whole day writing comments about dog and cat videos. Well, mostly dog and cat videos. They're the most common ones that come up. It does get boring after a while. It's hard to come up with anything original to say about a dog running into a glass door or a cat chasing a laser dot. Sometimes, a video like this pops up and provides a bit of relief from the daily grind. This one has been especially good because your reply to my comment has provided me with the key to escaping from the sheer drudgery of commenting on all those other videos. Or just don't go to places that see women as objects?
@that_travel4 ай бұрын
@@shadowofseattle1338 well this is drastically misinformed! 😅 that's not how Muslim countries see women at all. By the way it's also sonetimes appropriate to dress conservatively in Hindu and strict Christian countries, that's why you need to research! If you visit a country, it's the right thing to do to respect their culture and I prefer not to strike places off my list just because they have a faith and I don't ✌️

@@that_travel I've yet to find a place wherein my male companions have been expected to show nothing but their eyes Cultural sensibilities are one thing... but stubbornly clinging to anachronistic dogma is another thing entirely
@that_travel4 ай бұрын
@@shadowofseattle1338 so where are you talking about if not Muslim countries? In many Hindu countries, there are rules of dress for men as well as women and in mosques it's required that men cover their legs and shoulders, with the only difference being that women are also asked to cover their heads. It's practically unheard of that a woman tourist would be asked to wear a burka and show nothing but her eyes. These are worn almost always by choice by some Muslim women in some places. I'm sorry but you are showing quite a lot of ignorance. If you haven't visited countries where conservative dress is normal then it's fine that you wouldn't understand too much about it, but please don't then assume you do and spread misinformation.

@@TheGuvnorsDaughter that's quite literally the opposite of what I'm saying. What I said in parts 1&2 is that where it's customary to tip you should and where it is not customary to tip you should not.
