This is a very useful video. One thing I like about annotating PDFs in Zotero is that I can mark up the PDFs in Zotero, and save the notes, but if I want to share the document with a student or colleague, I can just export the file and it won't be all marked up. But I have found that Zotero's OCR sometimes is a bit glitchy, so it's good to open a PDF in Adobe, run OCR on the document, safe it, and then open it in Zotero. That seems to clear things up.

Not sure if this is mentioned in the video (I've been on the Beta for some time so I already know most of the features). The biggest disadvantage for me has been that the epub annotations don't seem to import into Obsidian. Not sure if it's been fixed yet, but last time I checked it still didn't work. Personally, i'd prefer to use ebooks but this makes it a non-starter for me until the plugin is updated. I think basically any plugin that pulls annotations won't work until there's an update because presumably Zotero considers the 2 formats totally different entities. So, if you're using ebook annotations, make sure it's compatible with anything else you might be using before you start doing highlights

Thanks for the video -- like a lot of people, I'm eager to try out Zotero 7. A couple questions: which Obsidian plugin has been updated for Z7? Also, does zotfile now work for Z7 or is there an equivalent, either in zotero or in a new plugin? I tried to figure this out from the Zotero forum but couldn't reach a conclusion about what is likely to work. Am afraid to update Zotero until I know.

1. The Zotero/Obsidian integration by M. Meyers has been updated. This is the plugin I use with my template for imports. The Obsidian Citations plugin shows last update in Sept 22. 2. Zotfile is no longer under development, so I doubt it would work in Zotero 7. 3. You can run both versions. Zotero 6 and 7 both use the same database. This is one way of getting around the plugin issue, but it would probably be better to move on and find alternatives in the ecosystem that are more likely to be maintained.

Aria no longer works in Zotero since the upgrade to Zotero 7. If you wish to use it , retain a version of Zotero 6.

Nice video. However, I have two questions: 1) Does it insert references in the body of the document? I see notations like (ID83) or (ID290), but I can't find these IDs in the bibliography. How does this work? and 2) Does it work with ChatGPT-4 by default, or do I need to have a ChatGPT subscription first?

Hey mate love your vids. You were an inspiration to try Zotero, and it's so much nicer to use day-to-day than EndNote. I understand you are an AIB student. Jack from AIB tells me there is no AIB reference template for Zotero and only for EndNote. So, currently, I use both. Zotero is used for my day-to-day research, and EndNote is used for the referencing for AIB papers. Very frustrating I did find the Australia Harvard reference template for Zotero but Jack tell me AIB style is slightly different from Australia Harvard. Any chance you can help Jack to create a AIB style template for all of us?

Fair question. Templates are discussed elsewhere, but essentially you have a folder where you store all your templates. This is identified in the Templates core Obsidian plugin. I then use Alt+T (Windows) to invoke a template in any note.

I'm new to Obsidian, so please bare with me! So do you have to put all of this code into a note every time you want to embed a video??
@ricraftisau
@ricraftisau 4 ай бұрын
Not at all. Did you read the article? Essentially you create a template which you can call with a hotkey at any time you want to insert a video. I use Alt T which will pull up a list of all my templates to choose which one I want to insert. By hitting V on the keyboard it takes me to the ones beginning with that letter and I select Video and it inserts it. Then simply copy in the embed code from KZbin or Vimeo. Hope this helps.

@@ricraftisau I did read the article, but as a new Obsidian user and with no code experience, a lot of it went over my head. I did learn after watching your video that templates were even a thing and went on to find some videos on how to use them. Your video helped me on my journey to solve the puzzle that is Obsidian, so than you for that!

I've been looking into organisational systems to get things clearer both mentally and with my digital files. This helped me lean towards something like Johnny Decimal where others didn't click as easily. I'm curious about how your folder structure is outside of Obsidian as this is something I need to work out so I have a global system. Thank you in advance!

@ricraftisau

I haven't used the ipad app so I can't really comment. If the rest of the data is coming across though and not the notes, that seems a bit odd. You may be better off importing only the data and doing the annotation in Obsidian.

@@ricraftisau Thank you for the quick feedback, but this is more or less the same than in the video. 🙂 So I need the basics! How do I access CSS or snippets in Obsidian? Where do I implement what? Do I need to install some more plug-ins to be able to do this? Your other videos all show the basic steps how to get there including needed plug-ins or settings. This one just says „copy paste a snippet“. I hope this is a bit clearer. 😀

Thanks for the nice review. You have many duplicated pdfs associated with your articles/research material, as is often the case. Two questions: do you know if importing 4 or 5 copies of a pdf into the ai causes it to 'overweight' the contents of those duplicated pdfs? and 2) is there (or why isn't there), a plug-in or built in way to remove or merge duplicate pdfs, just like one can merge duplicate articles?
@ricraftisau
@ricraftisau 5 ай бұрын
You are correct about the duplicates. They are the result of the PDFs coming from the attachment to the article and a second one from another plugin. I have restructured my Zotero recently and remove duplicates on a regular basis. It seems it isn't possible to manage them like the Zotero duplicate articles feature. forums.zotero.org/discussion/74119/remove-duplicate-pdf-files

Perhaps the AI should own it, not the organisations that created the AI? What if the AI is given rights and the organisations that created the AI be considered custodians?
@ricraftisau
@ricraftisau 5 ай бұрын
An interesting concept, but based on traditional legal frameworks, the AI would have to be a contractor and have an agreement that it owned any IP it produced. Otherwise, it would be an employee and all IP owned by its employer. I do like the way you looked outside the square though.

@@ricraftisau Thank you! Iff, the AI is able to identify which works of art/information it used as 'inspiration' the AI could give some sort of remuneration to the works creator(s). Overall I think we will need to treat the AI as their own legal entities at some point, especially if they encroach upon semi-sentience. Else, we will effectively be enslaving a disembodied super intelligent 'being'.

Perhaps you have misinterpreted the title. The purpose is to use the mindmap to then ideate using the generated map in Obsidian. That's how I do it and I take a screenshot of the map and paste it into Obsidian. I trust this clarifies the intent.
