So for beginners, should we learn 3DC over Blender/ZBrush ? Blender is kinda free option but crashing quite often due to polygons limitation & workflow in sculpting aren't really straightforward / organic like ZBrush. Which is why I'm looking at 3DCoat.
@danielaubert5608
@danielaubert5608 9 ай бұрын
Well, I still think Blender is the best option for beginners (and even pros). It is free and there is a ton of tutorials and courses online. I don’t know why you have that many crashes with Blender, maybe it is the version you’re using. I’ve heard that 4.0 (or was it 4.1) was a bit unstable, so try upgrading or using another version. And don’t go nuts with polygon count. You should focus more on overall shapes, primary and secondary shapes, since you are a beginner. 3DC is amazing, but it can be a bit clunky. If you go to Zbrush, you could try Zbrush Core. At the end of the day, you should pick which tool feels best for you.

By the way your videos are helping me out a lot because not to many people that create videos here on YT are doing female heads or characters. With the help of your videos that has lessened that steep learning curve because I have been struggling creating female heads in 3D coat. I just started out doing humans most of my beginner sculpting has been creatures and dogs mostly. Could you do one on hair specifically in 3D coat?

I have a question and although I've had 3dcoat for years, I'm just starting to use tools outside of the retopology tools. So, with that said, I'm confused about a couple of things. Surface mode and Voxel Mode. I've heard surface mode doesn't do adaptive (or dynamic) topology changes to the sculpt but it seems like it does according to what you're saying. Is that correct? and if so, both modes do adaptive topology changes but one mode is better than the other for certain tasks? is that the proper understanding? Thanks for your 3dcoat content. We really don't have enough users demonstrating 3dcoat outside of Pilgway. we need more.
@danielaubert5608
@danielaubert5608 Жыл бұрын
Sorry for the really late reply. In surface mode you can use auto subdivide to add detail as you sculpt. The ammount of detail depends on the brush size. Voxel mode adds geometry on the fly, but its resolution depends on the voxel grid resolution, if you know what I mean. It is like a 3d canvas with 3d pixels. You can draw anywhere on the canvas and the more dense the grid is, the more resolution and detail you will get.

Thank you for the videos. They are nicely done. One trick I always use with Auto-Retopo, that usually provides good results, is to create a duplicate of the object, if it has a lot of smaller details. Then use SMOOTH ALL a few times to reduce the high frequency/microsurface detail, and even use the FILL to fill in small cracks and such, quickly. This gives Auto Retopo a much cleaner base model to build the topology onto. Use this dumbed down duplicate to Auto Retopo. Then once you are fairly happy with the (Auto-Retopo) result, hide or delete it and use the high detail version for baking.

@danielaubert5608

Definitely. It already can handle millions of polygons and it has many capable tools. But of course you can first give the software a try by yourself before purchasing, so you can decide if it really can replace Zbrush in your workflow. Be mindful that you must be patient to learn the tools and adapt the clay settings to something you like.

Hi there Daniel, I'm trying to learn 3D Coat and found your video. I wanted to know what brushes you are primarily using since you are using a full screen view that hides the tools. I've been having the best luck with Wet Clay, Usual Clay and Thick Layers on the voxel side and Surface: clay fast and pinch on the surfacing tools side. Pressure seems to be all over the place and often has to be turned down pretty low to get accurate/subtle results.
@danielaubert5608
@danielaubert5608 Жыл бұрын
Hi Jon. This video is outdated, since 3DC now uses new clay engine. Try my new videos where I keep the interface on. But I mostly use the wet clay brush with an specific brush head (squareish), then you can play around with the brush setting, maybe looking at these new videos. Keep messing with settings till you get to understand what they do and find you desired settings.

Really happy to see these. I started sculpting in Blender and while I've learned Zbrush a bit also, the recent pricing changes + ZBrush's horrible UI have steered me towards learning 3DCoat instead. It seems to be the best Zbrush alternative at the moment and seems to integrate well with Blender in a workflow. Would love to see some 3DCoat sculpting tutorials from you, even a paid course or something. I think the lack of tutorials is 3DCoat's biggest shortcoming at the moment compared to Blender or Zbrush.

Ive fine tuned/learned more about sculpting in 3DCoat, i made my own Shader "Well, half True... i learned HOW to make my own Shader from the 3DCoat Forum" and it made sculpting *SO MUCH MORE FUN* honestly now, i think 3DCoats Sculpting is actually BETTER than Zbrush in lots of ways! how nuts is that!? 3DCoat has a real Poly Modeler, you can take Poly Models to Voxels, you can Texture like Substance Painter, you can Retopo... WHY IS THIS PROGRAM NOT TALKED ABOUT MORE OFTEN!?!? And its free Version is MILES BETTER Than Blender for Sculpting!!! i just don't get it!

While you are right with lots of aspects, ZBrsuh has a poly modeler too, called ZModeler, for quite a longer time than 3D Coat :) Also, I never understood the need for poly modeling tools in 3D Coat, because you can create anything using Voxel Modeling, giving you all you need also for creating base forms.
@Polygonlin
@Polygonlin 2 ай бұрын
@@harrysanders818 I think they're trying to Phase out the Zmodeler, honestly. or they may "Hopefully" add a Traditional, NORMAL Poly modeler much like Blender. i currently use both 3DCoat and Zbrush, been using Zbrush a lot on IPad and its nuts how well it works on a simple little ipad.. i just hate that they sold such a wonderful program to such an evil company... but i guess that's life. we artists are always the ones getting the Whip.
