@@chacochicken The next episode is truly a delight and not only does Brad Dourif perform at the top of his game, but he also probably outdoes all of the weekly X-Files guest stars. At least I can't think of a more menacing appearance in the entire series. :)

@@chacochicken In preparation for your upcoming video, I rewatched the "Beyond The Sea" episode to make sure that an aspect of the plot that bothered me was actually there and not a false memory - and yes, I can confirm that the relationship between Luther Lee Boggs and Lucas Henry was not only strange, but Lucas Henry's backstory and motivation for the crime wasn't very convincing. And I've wondered before, and wonder now more than ever, whether this aspect of the show has been undone by possible rewrites or even reshoots of the original script. I mean, “Henry” started the episode like the “Zodiac” and ended it as a very interchangeable villain.
@hookybrickshooky952918 сағат бұрын
@@chacochicken Of course, the episode is anchored by Brad Dourif's fantastic performance and Scully's personal struggle with grief, which is a very strong force throughout the episode. But I also really like that Mulder is allowed to act wisely in the run-up to his "time out" after the injury and that Scully can both be a believer and is given the chance to act accordingly, as long as it's in the interest of others, but she resists Bogg's offer when it comes down to her own personal interest. I think that really gives her a lot of strength as a character. A Top5 Episode already in the first season - wow! ;)

I thought the episode was fine, especially for being such an early episode. I will say I’m surprised the show never brought back the concept of alien ghosts. Seems like such a great way to bridge the alien and spiritual / supernatural areas of the show.

“Squeeze” is an iconic episode, but is quite dated in some respects. Due to being a very early episode, the dialogue is expositional and isn't delivered convincingly. Briggs was definitely miscast, but Hutchison is a perfect fit, no pun intended. “Tooms” concludes the story in a satisfactory manner, but still feels like a downgrade from the initial episode. I can appreciate the subtle irony of Tooms evading detection for a century only to be crushed to death by the ever-expanding forces of consumerist modernity. I just wish more time had been spent exploring his origins in the late 19th century. Maybe we could have a graphic novel set in Victorian times, exploring his backstory. I can just imagine him bursting through one of those old brass vents, yellowed with bile and arms outstretched, or snaking his way down the chimney of some decrepit tenement.
@chacochickenАй бұрын
Certainly, Squeeze is the advent of the MOTW in its proto-stage. The nature of pre-streaming network tv just never gave writers enough time or space to really develop some concepts with a few rare exceptions. I could envision a League of Extraordinary Gentlemen run where a murderous Tooms as the real Ripper has climbed through a coal chute, powdery black as midnight looking for liver #5.

I certainly appreciate the references to Seinfeld (David Puddy painting his face because *squints eyes* "gotta support the team" ) and the Sopranos (Christopher and Paulie almost freezing to death; imagining that the Russian was 'gotten' by the Jersey Devil)! I imagine some who haven't seen the Sopranos might be a little confused by the otherwise amusing reference, so perhaps a little footnote to help our fellow viewers who haven't seen the aforementioned show might be a nice touch. On a personal note: Very cool that you used to teach undergraduate anthropology! When I was a grad student, I used to teach undergraduate research methods and statistics in psychology :) Now it makes a lot of sense why your style of presentation is appealing and easy-going: You have prior experience teaching which, in my opinion, is often best when viewed as a kind of story-telling :)

In a way the trivia was stronger than the episode itself! Well done! When I was much younger, The Face on Mars was a very popular mystery - it had a Lovecraftian quality to it. In a way, I'm glad that The X-Files addressed the topic, but a good mystery alone doesn't make a good episode. On the other hand, I wouldn't have minded if the Challenger disaster hadn't appeared in the series. Things were still too fresh for my taste back then.
