I have to ask, what is the fishing float attached to the dump valve? Isn't that an opportunity to get tangled? Care to explain, please, as I haven't seen this in your other videos

I just finished sidemount essentials wit Vas Proud in Gozo, awesome experience and certainly not the last course with Vas or Steve. It is still a long way to go before thinking about cave training but it looks like it is definitely worth the effort. Thanks for the video, awesome !

This was published the same year I learned to dive. About a year later I found this video and it ultimately became my inspiration to undertake cave training. Thank you so very much for posting this and sharing your experiences!

See this is why people need this. Cause the first time u lost the line couldn’t see and had an air issue there was instructor and a safer environment. If it had happened for the first time deep in a cave u would probably be dead no chance to practice more

i seriously dont i have always appreciated the open waters, i have never been over confident with mother nature, i have always been truly afraid a bit with open waters, every time i see open waters my palms start to sweat, and even diving its to like being in a small space because it is dark and you are surrounded by water in the pitch dark, so how these dudes go deep diving is beyond me, but i have always truly respected cave and deep water divers and guys who deep dive to fix oil pumps!!!

Try some normal caving first to get you familiar with the cave environment. In Britain (where cave diving originated) most cave divers are cavers first who take up diving to explore places that can only be reached by diving. This gives a different perspective/mindset to many other countries such as the US where most cave divers are open water divers first, but have little if any experience of caving. Techniques in Britain tend to be a bit different too as our caves often have small, tight passages with very poor visibility, so things like the buddy system are impractical. Side mounted rigs were also first developed in Britain by Mike Boon in the 1960s as open water rigs weren't practical in British caves. Consequently the CDG (Cave Diving Group) techniques are very good for solo diving which is what's required in British caves. Not that the US based cave diving courses such as in this video aren't excellent too, it's just a slightly different outlook. The US courses were developed after numerous fatalities of open water divers having a go at cave diving and not realising how different an environment it is to open water diving. They then looked at the CDG's methods and adapted them to their own needs in Florida's blue holes which tend to have big roomy passages and excellent visibility. And of course improved safety techniques and better equipment continue to be developed all the time. I highly recommend Martyn Farr's excellent book "The Darkness Beckons." which gives a history of cave diving from it's start up to the present day (get the 2017 4th edition which is the most up to date). This film by Sid Perou is based on an early edition of Martyn's book: kzbin.info/door/iYypZaslo-jl9ykq6jt5RQ Martyn also runs cave diving courses: www.farrworld.co.uk/

I have to say after just finishing my cavern training, this video was extremely well done and the captions were perfect. I was so excited for you both for completing your course. I felt excited when you both found the line!! I know how stressful that is and how utterly exciting to have found that line. I do have a question for both of the divers, do you have floats on your read dump valve strings? It looks like you both had a float to make it easier to reach, but does that also increase your chance to have that become entangled? Well done! and Thanks Steve for recording so much footage!
