my music has been shit from the start. thats why ive not taken it seriously at all, but then it started sounding ok-ish. now im too good to make funny bad music, but too bad to make actually good music. i still cant sing at all, but at least my timing is sounding like im trying to be on beat.

Great talk....the issue is that THE MIX ENGINEER is NOT neutral in how they affect your music. They are AS MUCH the MUSICIAN if not more than the supposed musician's music being mixed. MIXING is PHOTOSHOP for the EARS. EVERY HAIR in PLACE MUSIC.....Increasingly, we will WANT RAW RECORDINGS as proof that they are NOT AI. Reality will become the anti-dote to PHOTOSHOPPED MUSIC and AI MUSIC.

It's good to know what sounds good. I learned through listening. Some sounds compliment the music while others can be too loud. 😊

There is some truth to what you say but respectfully, I can't fully agree. A bad mix can ruin the experience. Learning how to mix yourself to get the results you want helps out. You may not need to send it out, but you should develop your ear, your sound, and try to produce the astetic you are looking for in your work.

It may take some practice, but loudness can be achieved first by: -proper sound selection and arrangement so that sounds of the same frequency aren’t stacked on top of each other and muddying up the mix. The catch 22 is that it takes experience to know how to properly select sounds that complement each other Then i would say very gently compression , limiting and an absolute MUST is clipping with K clip. That’s what I’ve found in my 10 years of experience : )

A good mix is everything, it gives a track energy, makes it a cohesive whole. There's a bit more to it than sticking a compresser on every track and the master though. Although, as a musician you don't need to get too bogged down with the art of mixing - it's time consuming, time that could be spent making music.

I have the opposite problem. I do a couple of live sets a year locally, constantly getting hassled to do more. It's funny because a lot of my friends that I've got to know as I've got older, know me through my non musical endeavours, so even those who aren't really into what I do, are still intrigued. 😂 Just enjoy what you do!

sorry but this is the most irresponsible shit i've ever heard This is part of the reason music holds no value today - DO NOT UPLOAD TO DSPS without mixing and mastering, you have plenty of other platforms to test your music

Thank you for saying this. I feel like this is something we all as artists have felt at some point but blinded by the expectation upon our output as artists. I think it’s really important that the philosophy of art creation is being talked about more lately (especially by you!), it’s the best way to make sure we don’t lose sight of the artistic image human kind will output over our collective lifetimes :)

I have learned the hard way that I should generally maintain low expectations for my real life connections to affirmatively support my music. However, there were a small few out of the many who did genuinely enjoy what I did. These treasured individuals, consisting of some of my former music teachers and a couple of my former classmates, made sharing with everyone worth the trouble.

Great perspective! I’ve found that you’re never going to please everyone . One artist or engineer will think it’s perfect, and the next will have ideas to make it better. Additionally, the average listener is not going to nitpick the mix like other musicians will. I’m trying to remember that and not stay stuck in the mixing process.

Take into account the history of recording too. We went from a bunch of people in a room playing to one mic, to now having essentially an infinite number of ways to produce music. People still enjoy those early records. Don't get stuck on "industry standards". If you like it, release it.

did you ever read Hegel my dude? lately ive been re-reading Science of Logic: Doctrine of Being, and it goes very much how you describe it (I read it in portuguese so im not sure about the technical terms): he claims that appearances are, necessarily, the way in wich essences "emerge", as both are interconnected. from it it follows that theres no real "faking", as every aspect of phenomena is a necessary and "true in itself" moment of the whole movement. he also explores the unity between form and content, wich seems to be something you value. i wish i could expand on it a bit more but my english is very shit and hegel is hard af. anyways I definitely recommend it for anyone interest on these topics

its totally normal, but friends can also really like your music and become obsessed. I think in general, when people decide they "like" a band, it depends on a bunch of variables that are happening during that moment they are introduced to your music. It could be weather or not it was at a live venue, if they were in a good mood at that moment, if they were drinking or under the influence of something, what was happening in their personal life, or what was going on politically at that moment. All of these things can factor into weather or not they like the music. Sometimes I can't just sit down and listen to a new band until i'm ready for it, if i'm in a bad mood i'm not going to be as receptive to new music, and its shocking that many music listeners out there don't have a listening setup that is condusive to catering a great listening experience, and that can detract a new listener as well. For example, many people just listen to music on their phones these days, and that just isn't the greatest platform, especially when you spend so many hours in a studio tinkering with EQ and mastering, that 15 second clip on instagram could be a death wish based on whatever it was they scrolled from or scrolled to in that moment. But really, its not fair to put these obligations on artists because its a distraction from the crative process. Its unfiar that artists are derailed into this type of awareness, i just wish and hope for a future where artists can just make art in their own bubble and the art ends up in the hands of people that are ready to, and want to appreciate it. But it seems like there are so many hurdles, and other people with deep pockets standing in the way that will disrupt this every time!

Thanks for sharing. As a music/voice teacher turned producer, one thing I've noticed over the years; the young artists most gifted in singing and songwriting, and most driven for success were the least appreciated by family and friends. They would often go out of their way to undermine their work and sway them from their path. This became even more true after they started having career success. Besides friends, I often had to wonder if their parents envy their talent and success, because of how they were reacting. Of course I am in a blue collar town and people here are very conditioned that way. I always encouraged them to keep going regardless. Every great success story had this to overcome.

This is universally true, I have a group of people who are very supportive but most of the people I know don’t care/are overly critical (even if it’s constructive). All in all though friends are only a kickstarter for the very early stage, the goal should always be to reach an audience who it will resonate with even if it takes a long time. Stay yourself, get better and it’s gonna pay off if you don’t give up too early.

Agree on the bad art thing, the very act of creation is the thing of import, from there, how close did you get to an expression of something you feel is true. Now, authenticity, I'm doing a songwriting challenge which is forcing me to write songs and I'm in a bit of a tizz about this because to some extent what is coming out feels more forced than works I feel more connected to. It's a rather interesting scenario to me as the works do have to be shared which I do not often do!

I will say that people search for artists they don't know, a fresh voice to them, and generally spurn the work of those they know personally. I do it too. I know guys who wrote books and it's like...
