Re: omnigrid rulers To get accurate cuts, should edge of fabric be aligned with outer edge of line , which is fat, or middle of line, or inside of line?

This is interesting. I am playing with some different threads, but silk is just too expensive for everyday piecing. Which of the polyesters do you find works well for everyday piecing? You mentioned bottom line shreds. Have you tried Superior’s So Fine? I am planning to give that a try. :)

Bags - re Bosal and Soft and stable- I make a lot of bags. Better not to use fusible as it can crease. To keep out of seams use heat and bond light ( or similar) to adhere the foam to the fabric ( having cut the foam smaller so it is not in the seams). It does flatten if you want to leave in seams - in which case stitch 2 rows or zig zag within those seams as this would flatten it. Even using a hammer flattens it ( not done that but some people do). On corners you can staple ( yes!) where you are not going to stitch and remove staples before turning out. But I prefer keeping it out the seams. if it comes off the fused interfacing on turning- then I press again. As Philippa always says - try a test piece.

Apparently Karen Buckley advises to have the scissors sharpened professionally and only the straight blade as you suggested Philippa . I found this info on the Amazon website. I also found the sharpening info on various sites that sell her scissors.

Hi there! I’m a beginner and I bought thread on Amazon and didn’t realize what I bought. It ended up being “embroidery” 100% polyester thread 40wt. Will this be okay for regular sewing and quilting also??

How about using a .5 mechanical lead pencil. No sharpening is required.

Agree 100% re “ Talent “ it annoys me that people think I was born with being able to paint, sew etc it’s a skill most people can learn with time, effort, patience and perseverance. You have to want to do it. Like a musical instrument ( my husband plays many instruments ) he wasn’t born with a guitar in his hand. But I think some people don’t understand how you’ve applied yourself and they aren’t interested in trying themselves. 🤷♀️

I do the exact same thing as you with the back stitching, backstitch 1/4 inch from the ends so the backstitch won't be cut off when trimming the block and won't be caught in the seam creating bulk. You're about the only other person I know that does this! If I know when a seam will be an open seam I will also backstitch along the seam in other areas just in case, after much use, that piecing thread snaps. I will also definitely backstitch more often for baby quilts or other quilted things that will see a lot of use and washing to help keep it together longer. One of my biggest quilting pet peeves is when I'm putting quilt blocks together and find piecing seams coming apart so I have to stop what I'm doing to sew them back together again! GRRR! I use both to the side and open seams, depending upon the block. A simple block with minimal seams - to the side only. A block with a lot of seams - both to the side and open where necessary to reduce bulk in certain areas...and I will trim some seam areas to reduce bulk even more. My concern with open seams is always the weight of the quilt and how dense the quilting stitches are in the areas of open seams. After all the only thing keeping an open seam together is one layer of thread used for piecing and one thread in that area used for quilting. All it would take is that one piecing thread to snap and you have a problem in that area.

how good to see Antari as we all know her work and contributions she makes to QQT. Both your miniatures amazing the miniature quilts always amaze me I find it hard to understand how anyone can do things so detailed in such a small area, time I looked at the class I am sure that is what you are thinking Philippa!! Also good to see Diane`s quilt too. Thanks Philippa for making the video for those of us too old to get to the shows anymore

I watched a video of a woman who tested several kinds of pressing solutions, water, steam, Best Press, etc., to see which, if any, of them shrank or distorted the block. One or two didn’t change anything, but the ones that did only changed the block literally by a thread or two, which makes zero difference in a quilt. So, use whatever you want and press on, my quilting friends.

To @Linda Lang regarding Bottom Line thread. As it's for winding bobbins it will usually come in larger size spools / cones. You can put that spool / cone behind your machine on a thread stand to be able to use it in your needle if that's what you want and of course to wind your bobbins.

Regardless of how you press your seams, ALWAYS, ALWAYS, backstitch when you start and stop your seam. It will save you time and headache as you handle your quilt top. I’ve had to learn the hard way. Never again!
