22:45 The legendary James (Jimmy) Durrant, viola and chamber music teacher from the RSAMD and Saturday Junior Department Orchestas conductor. Such a kind gentleman, with a passion for the music he conducted. Having struggled with Sir Gibson's somewhat erratic downbeat in my NYOS days it was good to hear an explanation for his "interesting" baton technique.

Thank you Mark Hood!! I enjoy this recording!!
Wonderful performance! November 1974,Karajan and Berliner Philharmoniker performed this great Bruckner's symphony at Tokyo,the performance was broadcast on FM and I airchecked it on a cassette tape. However, because l listened too much, the tape was frayed. It's incredible that a performance in 1974 would be uploaded. Mark,thank you very much.Karajan's performance at these days are amazing, isn't it?

It should be the exact Brahms violin concerto that Brahms intended to. The right hall, the right orchestra and most important, David Oistrakh, of course.

Wow! Tennstedt’s interpretations of Mahler are among some of the most profound, gut wrenching, and technically spectacular to be found. This performance should stop anyone in their tracks in are and wonder (and a good share of existential angst.)

In my opinion this is still the greatest symphony ever composed. I just love every single part of it, every movement is a masterpiece on its own and as s whole composition it still awes me everytime I'm listening to it. Thank you, Beethoven, for this amazing piece of art!!!

Sargent also conducted in the movie Instruments Of The Orchestra, where the ensemble was playing a piece by Benjamin Britten, known as The Young Persons Guide To The Orchestra. The purpose of the piece and the movie was to introduce children to the instruments of the orchestra.

It's too little, alas, but how wonderful to have this film. Jon Vickers is a great, great singer and magnificent singing actor and, way beyond all other tenors, my favourite. Thank you so much for finding and posting this gem.

Mark Hood....thank you for posting this 1974 live recording.. Leonie Rysanek has always been a favourite soprano ( and later mezzo) of mine...a force of nature, since she took to the Met stage in 1959( stepping in for an indisposed Maria Callas) as Lady Macbeth, as Salome here....and right up to 1995, where sang her fairwell as Ortrud , Wagner's Lohengrin...at age 69!

I saw Kempe/RPO in this music in Ann Arbor during 1973-1974. He left ZERO pause between the last two movements of the symphony, which was quite jarring. What an effect! And a beautiful performance.

They're lip synching to their own voices, and merely making the amount of lip/jaw/neck action necessary to convince anyone who hasn't seen it done for real. The singing is incredible! I'd like to see that, but merely hearing Vickers in his prime is priceless.

That's how Karajan worked, with tapes in rehearsals.
@ER1CwCАй бұрын
Thanks for this. The productions are beautiful, and Birgit Nilsson's complaints about Karajan's misplaced priorities notwithstanding, I do think that he knew what he was doing in terms of the visual aspect. But it's so funny that at the end of both acts, the picture immediately turns to him once the major stage action is done. Even a film project was the Karajan show through and through.
@illyaismail6413Ай бұрын
I guess Nilsson was used to the Bayreuth productions but even then, this doesn't look much different than the productions Wieland and Wolfgang produced at Bayreuth.
@ER1CwCАй бұрын
@ She would get very annoyed that he would spend all the prep time fiddling around with lights rather than preparing the music! I agree that he was definitely influenced by the Bayreuth productions, but that’s not a bad thing at all.
