Hi do you have advice for mac users, I want to do deep opening prep and was interested in chessbase, but chessbase can only work using parrallels or bootcamp and slows the engine massively. Chessify is far too expensive. So do you think deep shredder 13, or HIARCS chess explorer pro, are better options, given they are compatible for mac OS. Ultimately I want to be able to do deep analysis and store my prep, so what do you think is best for mac? Please help.

Chess Studio is another option with a similar format to forward chess. Also, an advantage of forward chess is that you can highlight the text, which I don’t believe you can do in the other ebook formats. You can bookmark in Chess Studio and play variations with engine evaluation. One more thing: many forward chess ebooks let you play through variations similar to Chessable! I have bought many books in multiple formats. The videos are variable quality in Chessable, depending on whether you like the person’s voice, or if they speak English well. But they are as a rule very pricey!

Maybe I missed it, but did you at any point employ a system of "corresponding squares"? I wouldn't blame you if you didn't. It seems to be one of the most frequently mentioned yet poorly explained systems in endgame books. The best treatment I've found is Averbakh's Comprehensive Chess Endings (Volume 4): Pawn Endings.

I didn't, but this is also partly Dvoretsky's fault: neither the exercises or lessons ask this of the student. The focus has been converting distant opposition to close opposition and understanding how to use the distant opposition to outflank the opponent. Throw in the matter of knowing what squares you must not allow the enemy king to reach at any cost. The rest is just calculation. A lot of calculation.

@@ilanpi That's right!
@ilanpi

I now have a negative impression of Dvoretsky's Endgame Manual since I looked up the K+Q vs K + R endgame in that book. It consists of the only draw, the basic Philidor position, then an analysis of a single position. It is therefore pretty much useless when trying to learn this difficult endgame, since it doesn't even mention the second rank and third rank defences required to understand what is going on.
@goodspellr1057
@goodspellr1057 2 ай бұрын
No endgame book covers that endgame sufficiently, as far as I can tell. Not even Averbakh's book specifically devoted to Queen v. Rook. The best resource I have found for learning that endgame is a free chessable course by someone named Rookshelf.

@@ilanpi 34 videos? Good god. lol. It reminds me of Nunn's book called "Secrets of Rook Endings" which turned out to be hundreds of pages of dense lines devoted to R+P vs R. Here is my take on this topic: learn some key ideas and positions, and understand the core strategy. You have to ask yourself at what point is more time on this not better spent on other topics and aspects. In my particular case, I can assure you I try to make every second I spend count since I am all too aware of how many gaps in my knowledge base and skill set I need to fill or improve.
@goodspellr1057
@goodspellr1057 2 ай бұрын
@@chess_and_tech I think that's a good approach. After all, you are highly unlikely to ever encounter Q vs.R in an actual game, and you might be lucky enough to face an opponent who knows that they are "lost" with rook and just resigns.

A friend of mine owns CB17 and curses it as it's prone to frequent crashes. Can anyone confirm that? or is it just his machine?
@chess_and_tech
@chess_and_tech 2 ай бұрын
I won't say I've never had a crash, but frequent? Not here. The problem is that there are lots of ways to cause it with ChessBase without it being the fault of the program. A prime example is how the engine is set up. Too much RAM, or all the CPU cores, and it can destabilize the system as the engine hogs all the resources. I am not saying this is the culprit, I'm just illustrating what I meant.

@@chess_and_tech Thanks!! I am from the older ChessBase 11 and 12 generation and was thinking of upgrading but hearing the horror stories of my friend crashing CB17 even for the simplest task as searching a game (engine not even turned on yet). But I think it's safe to attribute it to external factors like his machine, programs that were running at the time, lack of RAM etc and not the fault of Chessbase itself. Looking forward to try CB 18.

First thing first: the best video about CB18 so far! Well done! I applaud ChessBase GmbH for major improvements and new functions. However, 3 service packs in 48h is not so nice. Additionally, I believe they missed an opportunity to integrate Compute Cluster due to their lack of understanding of cloud architecture or trying to keep ChessBase a closed shop.

Look, fixes and small details are not uncommon. I myself reported two small bugs, and CB17 has had a total of 28 updates, the 28th coming after CB18 was released, though that included added functionality like the Replay Trainer. I will refrain from the Engine Cloud as I don't use it much, but I will add that they do offer a free Cloud Engine (nothing super powerful) for CB18 buyers. I saw it listed in my engines as RemoteEngine, but haven't tried it yet. It is on my To-Do list.

The mobile appearance and experience is quite different (including colors), and the settings even has a button that automatically installs it as a clickable app from your mobile apps. @ thank you for your answer. I would be very interested to see a working online player search. So far i haven’t seen one. Some parts as in 10 or so teams can be looked up and then get the message either that too many results cannot be displayed or that the server is not available. I have seen forums online that others experience the same. I have CB18 installed on 2 machines and for some reason 1 machine can do an update and the other machine does not see the new update. The cloud engine is working wonderfully. So i believe that your review could be better. I am glad though that i can experience your thoughts.

Nice overview! Silly question... How did you manage to get the Chessbase products you own to show up in the "My databases" folder view in Chessbase? Did you simply install them into that folder (or copy manually into it), or is there another trick? I've a bunch Fritztrainer products and other databases from Chessbase, during installation I'm asked for the top-level Chessbase documents folder, afterwards they show up under "Purchased Data" folder in the folders tree, so I need to navigate between folders to find them. Ideally, I'd want the CB products I use the most to be readily available next to my work database and other personal databases.

I only owned one of the programs of the suite, Affinity Designer v1, which I used for my videos and thumbnails among other things.
