Interesting that this route went via Thessaloniki. Going via Sofia and through Bulgaria would have taken you into the Iron Curtain at that time.

I remember the great meals in the dining cars in the 1960s' it was still like this up to even the 1980s. The Golden arrow from London to Paris was also very luxurious. I used to take it in the 1960s because the planers in the winter were often delayed or even cancelled due to fog.

We used to holiday in Folkestone and in 1954 my brother and I were allowed to stay up late and were taken as a great treat to Folkestone Station to see the 'Golden Arrow' come through. We hung around on a deserted station until, suddenly, there was a mighty roar and a very large THING shot through the station and my little brother wet himself! My dad said it was called 'Le Fleche d'Or' in France. I thought this was very clever.

Another thing that makes this film very rare is that is shows the connection between the Orient Express in Istanbul with the Ankara Express to Ankara and the Taurus Express onto Aleppo and Beirut.

First train trip to Paris was in 1980. Train from Victoria was formed of 4-CEP units running non stop to Dover Western Docks. Crossed to Calais on a Sealink ferry. Had a burger and chips. Train to Paris was made of quite new Corail coaches and had a trolley service. At Amiens the loco was changed from diesel to electric. About 7 hours travelling time, quite an adventure.

@@lawrencelewis8105 no, but the Nighr Ferry was still running, in last year of operation. After the Night Ferry was withdrawn, the night boat from Dover to Dunkirk still ran for a few more years.
