You both brought out so beautifully that the Carnatic system is such an evolving entity that morphs over time, depending upon various factors and the intent behind change, at most times, remains hidden. Even with the broader fabric of scientific and technological evolutions, we have been witnessing changes within human relationships, friendships, work-life balance, parenting and much more over the years. It looks to me that the core behind these changes point to a more basic change in the value systems - what was/is valued musically and otherwise, constantly shifts over time, for all human beings. What artists and audience valued musically many years back might not be the same as what artists and audience value today. When audience had more time for music listening, probably they were more receptive to listening to more raaga alapanas etc- we do hear about past musicians who have sung all night or audience who sat through a 6-8 hour concert! Today, if artists sing raagam for more than 5-10 mins, the audience starts getting impatient - so the artist is trying the best to accommodate their time constrains too. May be at some point, without the kind of distractions that we have today, there was more time for artists and audience to really enter into a symbiosis where they were able to value music without a time-bounded approach. And the time boundedness attitude of music making and listening seems to be directly related to what and how we come to enjoy it in our lives! Just offering my 2 cents. Thanks again for the engaging conversation ❤️
