Every day from 1957 to 1962 I would have a steam train ride from Groombridge to East Grinstead to go to the Grammar school and back again of course. Many thanks for the memories from Vancouver, Canada

Just madness how we closed lines back then ☹️ How we’d need it back now especially with the roads being congested and the price of fuel not too mention more houses being built 🤔 They should of just mothballed it 👍🏻

Always reinventing and/or adapting to the situation. He must be a humble soul, considering his daunting talent. He seems always more interested in learning than repeating the past.

excellent shots👍 i am disgusted that these stations once were running ok have now disappeared or in ruins that's not a way to treat a railway it needs to be looked after we want people on trains not on roads 😡bring it back like it use to be there was nothing wrong with it it's just mindless vandalism

I suspect that the reason the level crossing was retained and the station not relocated onto the other side of the road sooner, was in the hope that the line to Lewes would at some point be reinstated. Opening the new station was in some ways an admission of defeat there. I hope not, I'd still like to see the Lewes section re-open in my lifetime (it's probably unrealistic that any other closed branch lines in the area will), although they'd have to join it to the Plumpton/Cooksbridge line at the Lewes end now. Until sections of the line were singled, trains had still been using "arrival" (the old southbound) and "departure" platforms at Uckfield, with trains using the headshunt beyond the station.

Hmm. I think he should have definitely done what Dylan did after Hendrix released All Along the Watchtower. And that's incorporate the improvements which the later cover instigated. The Turtles version of this McGuinn & Gene Clark tune improves everything that was going on in the early Byrds demo and in this live performance. The tempo, mood and superior enhanced chord structure the Turtles employed is definitive for me.

Such a shame that these lines weren't just "mothballed" instead of closing them down. I'm sure that they would be very useful today for carrying freight and/or passengers.

Why can't these old railway lines be new cycle routes and or public right of ways where practical? It seems such a, shame to allow them to vanish with time when they played a key role in shaping the future of Britain at the time.

As a youngster I used to enjoy exploring disused railways on my bike (there are plenty of them in Kent and Sussex). I thought I was a bit of a nerd doing this and therefore didn’t tell my friends as I thought I would be teased about it however with the advent of the internet and KZbin it seems I am not alone in this hobby!! I think there must be scope now for re-opening some of these lines as there is greater demand with a larger population, road traffic congestion, ever more draconian parking restrictions, speed cameras and motoring taxes etc - I think those vandals Beeching and Marples have a lot to answer for - they could have at least shown some foresight and preserved track beds, bridges and tunnels for future use and prevented building on the old lines. For example it was very poor planning to allow Sainsbury’s to block the Tunbridge wells west- to TW central line. If that didn’t happen then we could have had scope to reopen Eridge - T/Wells and Uckfield - Lewis and then could have had a fast rail service from Tonbridge to Brighton and Eastbourne instead of the current painfully slow bus service and expensive parking in the coastal towns

Regarding Tunbridge Wells Sainsbury's - I understand the land still belongs to the relevant railway authority & is on a kind of rolling lease arrangement on the understanding there was always the remote chance of the line returning, but given that the building sits across the old trackbed & the last time the Frant Road tunnel was surveyed it was deemed not cost effective to repair it seems unlikely that the line could be reopened. In respect of the old P Wood to Hawkhurst branch line - this is one of the few old lines where nothing major has been built obstructing the line & most of the infrastructure is intact. Not saying it will ever be reinstated but if they do seriously look at reopening any of these lines then this branch would be a prime candidate.

I’ve just explored both Horsmonden and Badgers Oak tunnel (March 2021) and they are still both accessible no fencing yet, you will however need to negotiate fallen trees and lots of undergrowth and you’ll need some good wellies as they where both pretty water logged
