A crime that this building was demolished, just a flat piece of ground where it stood. Shame on every councillor, planner and politician who allowed this to happen. The line south to Lewes was closed by so-called Labour in 1969. How Uckfield still deserves to have this handsome station. Every Lib Lab Con trick politician and council officer who allowed this should be named and shamed.

I suspect that the reason the level crossing was retained and the station not relocated onto the other side of the road sooner, was in the hope that the line to Lewes would at some point be reinstated. Opening the new station was in some ways an admission of defeat there. I hope not, I'd still like to see the Lewes section re-open in my lifetime (it's probably unrealistic that any other closed branch lines in the area will), although they'd have to join it to the Plumpton/Cooksbridge line at the Lewes end now. Until sections of the line were singled, trains had still been using "arrival" (the old southbound) and "departure" platforms at Uckfield, with trains using the headshunt beyond the station.
