good explanation, but still not very practical. that's what i kinda struggle with in all FM explanations - the theory is usually explained "ok" (though even the theory explanation isn't 100% correct. Yamaha's "FM" isn't really a linear FREQUENCY modulation, it's a PHASE modulation - it uses this function: y(t) = A * sin(ωct + I * sin(ωmt)) - where c stands for carrier, m for modulator. so the actual output of the modulator is just plainly added to the phase of the carrier. much simpler to calculate) but that doesn't matter, bcs what it doesn't tell you is what that will _sound_ like. and that's bcs it's extremely hard to tie the theory to the practice. E.g. the common knowledge is that when you have a carrier-modulator pair in 1:1 frequency ratio (which i assume is the scenario shown on the DX11 here) you should ultimately get a sawtooth result. now try to do the math and you'll find that it's extremely difficult to derive that mathematically (i tried, it's difficult 😀 so the theory doesn't really help you predict. if i show you a setting, just with theoretical knowledge you'll have a hard time predicting what the resulting sound would be even in this simplest scenario. the comon "layman" explanation is: "that's bcs in 1:1 it produces all the harmonics. in 1:2 it produces only the odd harmonics." "ok, but why?" "WeLl BcS 1+2=3, rIgHt" 😀yeah, derive that from the original equation. i dare you! 😀That's where the Bessel functions come into play, it depends on the value of the index and generally gets complicated. so there is a big disconnect between the (relatively) simple theory and its very complex implications. the theory is totally unhelpful to the practice. (disclaimer - maybe it's just me being an idiot and missing something obvious - i gave the theory like 1 hour of my time to try and derive things, with the help of THE INTERNET and couldn't. and i'm not particularly great at math or FM programming - i did math for 5 years in college, but don't have a PhD and i program FM sounds on my Yamaha MODX but i'm not doing any super-complex patches, so ... what do i know 🤷♂

Hello Keith. Omnichord Om-27. I don't have sound in my headphones. I use Ableton 12. Ableton, lets me record, but I don't get sound in my headphones. I use a Scarlett 2i2. And... I hear some white noise(buzz). Why does that happen? And I don't know how to listen to music created in Ableton either Thanks

This is the best (maybe only) strategic approach to FM synthesis that I have seen. Your approach creates a framework for development of any sound.

Loved your video, great quality and detail. I too was curious about how the breath sensor worked, I've read about it on the service manual, but the description's drawing is "a bit" misleading (maybe they wanted to prevent others from copying it..), but the actual implementation is SO simple, it's basically a membrane microphone used as a pressure/deformation sensor. Also from reading the manual, I imagined it should present some kind of bouncing from the mechanical parts, and there it was: I could see the voltage dips below the resting value when you showed the staccatos. Once again, bravo and thank you for such a great video!

Why would you make a repair video but not even show doing the actual repair? ...You completely skipped actually removing are reinstalling the backlight... Totally defeats the purpose of making a repair video. Total waste of time.

I have watched a LOT of FM synthesis tutorials, but always end up randomly casting about for cool sounds. I always find them, but it can take a long time. This is the most methodical, clear presentation I've ever seen on how to program a patch in my synth. And I'm not even using a Yamaha synth! Thank you !!!

THANK YOU. I'm currently writing a manual for a DAW and was baffled by the FM in a synth in it because I've pretty much only had experience with linear FM and had absolutely no idea what it was doing. It is INSANE that I've never heard of this distinction in FM types before. There seems to be shockingly little discussion about it online.
