how come "Bless your heart" is derogatory?
@Chapter3CPoe
@Chapter3CPoe 4 ай бұрын
I don't know how familiar you are with common United States culture or speech, and unfortunately it ties into religious attitudes and perceptions, but... Especially in the Southeastern U.S., Christianity is considered the norm. Most people are Christians, and expect you to be. Within Christian circles, "bless your heart" is more positive. You want them to do well and receive the blessings God has to offer. For non-Christians... The tone of voice used when "bless your heart" has negative connotations. It started as a joke and euphemism for "oh, that [person] is silly" and "silly" gradually became other words with meaner meanings. From here, we see a jump to Christian saying "bless your heart" to non-Christians maliciously. At that point, it is used to mean the opposite. The Christian is looking down upon the non-Christian, and doing so plainly. Other Christians understand that the person being spoken about is irredeemable, and not worth their time or redemption. So, in my local area of the Southeastern United States, where it is already a derogative statement *most* of the time, I see it becoming purely derogative, thus the evolution.

A glossallaeial* tour de force with massive humour and no flaws whatsoever. * I invented the term 'glossallaeia', from the ancient Greek for "language-altering", to complement the term 'glossopoeia', meaning 'language-making', which conlangers sometimes use as a synonym for conlanging. Glossallaeia is an appropriate term when you're taking an existing language and changing it rather creating an entirely new one

I love this! I think it's a great idea to have a language that you don't put too much stake in, and just use to explore and practice. I also really really love the construction of the cessitative and continuative, the imagery of "the sun has set on my [verb]" is so poetic :D I love seeing people come up with really beautiful phrases to shave down into grammar. Really fun, really beautiful, and really inspiring! I want to go and work on my conlang now! Thank you for the fun video!

Hey, thank you! I'm glad you enjoyed it! The cessative and continuative, I had to set down with some form of poeticism. My end goal, for now, is to create conlangs for my campaign setting, and have them mirror real-world evolution, so... I *really* needed practice there! If you have the ability, share your conlang, too! I'd love to see what you come up with!

I absolutely love your aspect names. I'm not exactly clear on why you chose to make "c" be pronounced like "k" (and get rid of "k") instead of just keeping the (already unambiguous) "k" and just getting rid of (the already unnecessary) "c". This is by no means criticism but more musing of my own on where I might have gone with this instead: It feels a bit like some aspects were extrapolated to the point that they kinda lose some of their "country" origins/feeling. For example, instead of past/future tense being "d'"/"g'" I might have made them be "dun'" and "gun'" instead. Therefore, it would be "I dun'run" ("I ran") and "I gun'run" ("I will run"), etc.. Instead of making "I" a separate vowel, I probably would have just opted to spell that sound "ay" everywhere it occurred (including in the first person pronoun, so it would really be "ay gun'run", etc). It also seems like you tried to regularize a lot of the vowels (which I like), but then you're also inconsistent with their pronunciations in other places (is "e" supposed to be an "eh" or "ee" sound, or both?) I'm also kinda surprised you didn't make the second-person singular pronoun "yawl" and the second-person plural "awlyal"...
@Chapter3CPoe
@Chapter3CPoe 10 ай бұрын
I originally planned to make the 2nd-P pronouns yawl and awlyawl... Then thought it seemed better as 3rd-P pronouns, and... Well, to be honest, I forgot if I even used them. Making "I" be spelled "ai" would have been better, in my personal opinion, but I thought about my classmates. They would instantly recognize "I" as being pronounced /ai/, but might falter if they see "ai". After all, "fail" is not pronounced /fail/ around here. Then again, they usually just say "dun gon' an' mest up" instead, so there's that. The thing with "c" and "k" was an easy case for me. "C" is one stroke, and I know plenty of Cody's that wouldn't change their name to Kody. Imma just sum that up with being insecure about gender identity, which worries me about my state. Now, for your tense musings... I started there too, but I felt I couldn't leave it there. "Dun" and "gun" are already used, and many of the faster talkers in my area already drop the "un" from both. It hurt to not keep what I personally think was the funnier version of it, but in the long run decided that if people kept talking like they do now, the "un" would eventually drop all the way out of common speech in the US South altogether. I can't tell you how much I appreciate all the thoughts you shared about the video! Thank you so much! And, honestly, the truckative case is where the whole thing started, so I'm glad it worked out well!
