Sometimes, everything works out perfectly, and it feels as if the stars align.
And sometimes, the stars are actually just moving out of the way.
For my second practice language, I have this heap of garbage to share with you. I utterly failed in creating a language that rolls off the tongue. But that’s not the worst of it. I failed my goals.
For instance, I wanted to challenge my ability to pronounce phonemes outside of English, and come up with consonant clusters that would push that challenge further. Some of those came through and really shone. For the most part, though, it was just weirdly pronounced English sounds. Most of the difficult sounds were dropped, and the non-English vowels became much more Anglicized.
So yes, my project was a failure.
But, it was a valuable failure. I learned some of my weak spots, and that is knowledge I can carry forward. I can address this shortcoming by either forcing them into my future langs, or by studying real langs with those features.
Why share it, though?
Because I’m here to help you learn too.
So, what are your shortcomings as a conlanger? What would you like to work on in the future? I look forward to hearing what you have to say!
