Watching this from Nelson, love your videos, as you are going to all the places the Wife and I used to go too when we were younger. We are both in our 70s now but still have our Campervan, that we have owned for 30 years. We still try and get out in it once a month, its about the same size as yours but with a high roof. Keep up the videos as the quality and presentation is really great.

I am pretty sure that’s allowed and is a great idea, but I would double-check with the park office just to be sure!

It really nice seeing people getting out and enjoying the wonders of NZ even with the weather being very changeable. Just a note it really is a big no no in protocol to take firewood from the doc or any hut, unless it was for an emergency. Imagine trampers arriving at the hut soaked to the skin only to fine the potential dry wood gone. Protocol is if using wood try to replace if possible and this is only if you are paying and staying in the hut. Welcome to visiting New Zealand but think of others.

What about the ventilation? I read about the black water of the toilet needed ventilation for it to be valid Thanks
@EricAndTaylor
@EricAndTaylor 27 күн бұрын
The rules on ventilation are pretty confusing, and we had to do quite a bit of research to figure out we didn't need to add a separate ventilation system. It depends on the type of toilet that you have, but most cassette toilets do not require separate venting systems. When we had the inspection, our windows and a small usb powered-fan were notated in the inspection under ventilation, but overall he did not seem concerned about it :)

We originally thought so too! But after reading a little more into the new regulations, they simply require the toilet to be 'fixed.' So, we figured out the easiest (cheapest) way to make that happen with our existing van build :)

Looks great guys! My dad used to own one of those over here in Australia, wish he still had it I would've loved to do something like that with it haha Also I don't wanna be that guy but you really should tidy up that 12v wiring, running them in split tube conduit would go a long way. The last thing you want to happen is a fire starting right underneath where you sleep

Hey! Love the videos. I’ve been in NZ for 1year. Can I ask where did you get your map on the ceiling - love that idea! and who did your self contained inspection? Thanks
@EricAndTaylor

The map actually came with the van when we bought it! It’s been so much fun to have :) We got our inspection done by a certified plumber in Nelson! It was a super easy and painless process

So tell us about this Freedom camp thing. I think it is something I have been saying the US needs to do. If you are fully self contained I think you should be able to buy permit after passing a test to camp on any state or federal lands parking lot for a single night. Camping has gotten way too restrictive and way to expensive in the USA. There are a lot of empty parking lots and this would solve the issue.
@EricAndTaylor
@EricAndTaylor Ай бұрын
Every city and region in New Zealand has their own rules regarding camping, but most places have designated ‘freedom camping sites’ which typically have limited or no facilities (which is why they require you to be fully self contained to stay there). You aren’t able to just ‘camp anywhere’ per say, but there are definitely a good number of options and we’ve never had any problems finding a place to stay for the night! There’s a list of things the van needs in order to pass the inspection and receive the sticker (fixed toilet, trashcan, fresh water, grey water tank, etc). We also have a pass for the Department of Conservation (DOC) campsites. This is a year long pass that allows us to book at almost any of the DOC campsites around New Zealand. This has been super helpful in national parks or more remote areas of the country :)
