this movie mesmerized me when I was young. on the surface, it is a fun scifi action romp through a cool world with a digestible and simple chase/race plotline. dig just a little deeper and you find a genuinely heart touching father/son tragedy. beyond that, you find little inklings of grander thoughts and musings on chasing perfection and the nature of life itself. then you start looking deeper into those musings and you start to notice through every character, all the archetypes present, the philosophy it carries with it through every scene. the name drop of Nietzsche and the rest of Flynn's collection of books really shows there was something far more ellaborate going on under the hood of this film. Flynn and Sam are obviously father and son, but Clu not only represents Kevin's past and dark previously unconquered shadow but also another form of lost son. a creation of his that he failed. Clu was to be the prodigal son, but he never could be due to his nature - Flynn's nature. The illusions to a sort of collective unconscious that connects life through the grid. sentience grew out of the grid itself through the ISO's. completely unintentional, undesigned by man or the user, they sprang forth. the fact that it exists in a world where the physical can directly interact and become part of the digital medium, which in many ways is a mere modern extension of esoteric beliefs on the occult, magic, and spiritualism, I could hardly invision a better direction to take with the plot.

Exactly the 3rd film is gonna suck because it’s a reboot, not a sequel to Tron:Legacy

Tron is easily my favorite movie. The atmosphere. The story. The satisfaction. Everything about this movie scratches that itch

Couldn’t agree more with the comments and the views against the film. One of the greatest films for me. Still shocked that it was made by Disney though after seeing what came after. The icing on the cake was seeing and riding the Tron ride in Florida not long after its opening, not knowing it was there. A 40 year old that turned into a kid for a small slice of a theme park was just amazing. If you haven’t experienced it, do it. The ride and its design is sublime and makes you feel as if you’re in the film.

Whenever I watch this movie, it makes me feel as though 'I' had been pulled through the portal and into the digital world alongside Sam. I always find it incredibly difficult to explain to people why this movie is such a 'sore thumb' amongst the majority of box office films. Oh yes...one more thing... You will NEVER EVER EVER go wrong, if you have DaftPunk doing the score and musical atmosphere of your production (bows down in respect).

The only and very huge flaw of this movie is the cast of its protagonist. Neither the movie itself nor Disney failed the movie. Garett Edlund (or whatever his name was) did it. Or more correctly, the guy who cast him.

It was, is, and will always be in my top 10 favourite movies ever. The sheer emotion I felt when I first watched it in theaters will never be forgotten. I was ten at the time and watched it with my dad, and ironically, many of the movie's themes between Sam, Kevin and their relationship have ended up reflecting my relationship with my dad perfectly. What a beautiful story and what a masterful movie.

Around the early 2000s, computer science departments in the UNC network of universities, partnered with private companies, invested in a whole bunch of research into "the Grid", which later became known as "the Cloud" because it was softer and friendlier. I was a student researcher in the Grid, something called "the Globus Project", led by the Globus Consortium. Yeah, there were Russians, lol. Competent computer scientists now, make no mistake. I'm suggesting that the writers had been stewing on their ideas for a few years, and I think I know where they found their verbiage. Also, the failed de-aging keeps me from watching this. They have the tech to do better de-aging. You know - the kind that actually lifts the brow and eyelids, shrinks the ears and nose, etc. If they don't do that it doesn't work. _The Irishman_ was an embarrassment.

Thank you for contextualizing the argument I've always tried, but failed, to express about this movie. It deserves far more credit than it received. I'm genuinely saddened that Joseph Kosinski won't have the opportunity to bring his vision to life in the third installment. I have a deep admiration for his work. Oblivion was awesome and, I believe, deserves more recognition. I was so excited to hear he was attached to a new version of one of my favorite childhood Disney movies, "The Black Hole". I'm worried that, without his involvement in Tron 3, this might be the final movie in this universe, potentially killing the franchise.
