I can tell from the language and buzzwords she’s using that she’s too woke for this field. It also sounds haltingly bitter. Also sounds like the field turned out to be too “normy and hard” for a girl who’s sociology professor told her to “take on the world”

Hi, just looking for some advice as a freshman studying at purdue and still has no idea what major to choose (ray it would be great if yall could help me out. I'm a person who doesn't have that much of a passion for anything (r) as bad as it sounds, I love fashion and content creating and always wanted to pursue it, but I never rlly thought of it as a realistic job option. one thing I know about myself is that I somewhat enjoy math and want to make enough money without having to spend all of my time in my job. So my question is, do you think you could be an actuary even if you don't absolutely love math? and also, are some actuaries more focused on communicating and consulting instead of just pure math? And lastly what is ur opinion on work, personal life balance in this field? Thank you

You said if you like math and statistics you can work for a sports analytics or music company. My friend who's an actuary now absolutely hated sports analytics. There are so many people who want to do sport or music analytics. This means you'll get abused, he was so replaceable because there were so many willing candidates, he was getting under paid and working long hours without being fairly compensated. Unfortunately almost any job you go into at all in the US now is evil. Insurance can be called evil, but so is working as an analyst for any company. My data scientist friends at Amazon and Google are doing far more evil work than I, and they don't have a clear path of progression like an actuary, their jobs are far less stable. Data science is getting very crowded at the entry level, the majority of the careers aren't helping but are rather doing their own form of evil work. I was working on AI before I started my CAS exams and you think it's enjoyable knowing you're building something to take peoples jobs? There are good and bad sides to everything.

There needs to be more of these "________ (university in Chicago" sucks videos. Hope you don't dabble in classical music, btw. You won't like my criticism. I wanted to go to UIC or that school (Northwestern) and major in architecture. Thank God I didn't. I ended up working in retail, as a manager. Soul-sucking, but beats working in an office, or in a lab (electronics certificate).

Thank you for this video. I have wasted so many years of my life and savings on prep resources and exam fees trying to pass just one exam to get my foot in the door while working fulltime in my demanding job. I have already paid for an upcoming sitting which will be my last attempt. This video just gave me the right boost to move on.

The only good argument is the pay. Actuarial salaries plateau after the exams are done. Any competent actuary could make way more in a quant role at a finance company

Applied over pure math? I have to strongly disagree there. Applied math is learning how to work and following it without questioning. Pure math is learning why we work and how to arrive at the appropriate instruction. This is far more rewarding.

Man I was really hoping this was going to be insightful and interesting. I don't even have a horse in this race. I'm sorry you didn't enjoy your experience but it really sounds like you didn't really do your due dilligence. Your hate towards commercialism and the idea a competitive market encourages autonomous product regulation has nothing to do whether insurance is evil. Personally its saved my life several times. Barrier of entry.. that is the very idea of the education system why does this suddenly bother you, it seems you have a degree. Do you think most "electrical engineers" whos been working CAD for the last 15 years can answer a question on RLC circuits in 6mins? A particle physicist with a doctorate whos been working on satelites for the past 5years will not be able to solve a problem involving Hamiltonian from their classic mechanics qualifications exam in 15-30mins. Or did you think being able to answer a statistical inference question(as it seems you liked statistics) from your professor's randomly proctored time was a surefire way to determine whether you were good or bad probabilist or statistican by your little letter grade.. There is free data available from the likes of NHANES, where you can apply your regression models and analysis. You will quickly realize, your A or F on the exam was useless and your practice from previous on applying R, or SAS or whichever u choose quickly exceeds anything else in usefulness. Surprise, practicing what you're trying to actually do makes you better at it and you don't actually solve word problems "out there". I would say you would be most successful if you instead claimed your goal was to spark discussion in the comments. As this video was so disappointingly unisightful, I really had high hopes it would knock me down to settle in my 9 to 5. Ironically, it has encouraged me to go back and finjsh my schooling to pursue work in an actuarial field. You may not find Insurances interesting but I always have and it seems that is a rare quality.

Making college a barrier to entry is a really bad thing for society at large. All we've done is deflate the value of education and inflate student debt. But that's not a con for actuarial science since the exams are usually paid for by the employer and are actually relevant to your daily work

I think that this is unfortunately one of the sad realities of the American educational model applied to the creative arts. Because of the intangibility and immense subjectivity that pervades all aspects of the creative process as well as what qualifies a work of art, the school system relies on quantity to provide as evidence of “work”. The issue of course is that the output of work by an artist has next to no relation to their quality as an artist - by that metric, Mozart would be considered 10 times the composer that Beethoven was. Additionally, in a time where music in the academic setting is extremely niche and advanced, a musician such as yourself who has only had the opportunity to do a Bachelor’s degree is automatically at a disadvantage and racing against the history of music in order to understand the current language and direction of contemporary music so as to eventually find their own footing or ‘voice’. One of my absolute favorite composers of all time, Franck Bedrossian, has only ever published 20 or so pieces. He is world renowned and has been composing since he was 12 (he is now in his 60s). The beauty of art is that you’re allowed to be extremely critical, precise, and meticulous in your art-making (youre allowed to be Beethoven!) The problem is that academia in the west, modeled after stem related research and international corporations, do not encourage that type of behavior. If I can give any advice, it would be to take some much needed time off and instead just listen to music. We often forget as composers that we learn far more about our own music from listening to others than from writing it down. Reground yourself in your math and enjoy teaching! I hope (and I’m sure) that there will come a time before long where you’ll find yourself taking out the ruler and writing a treble clef again. Best to you!

COME TO THINK 🤔 ABOUT IT, I ACTUALLY DESPISE PEOPLE LIKE , "YOU"; FIGURE OUT WHAT "YOU" WANT TO DO "YOURSELF", "FIRST" YOU OR YOUR FAMILY BEFORE TALKING DOWN OR SADLY ABOUT ABOUT WHAT ANOTHER PERSON COULD BE DOING, "PLEASE". I’m in P&C and disagree with many of your points. The property insurance industry can be very interesting. I’m working on building neural networks, object detection, automation of various tasks, and problem solving for other random projects that get thrown at me. Also in terms of being evil, I think property insurance is a completely necessary product. Good luck living in a risky area like costal Florida without it! Of course we need to turn a profit in order to pay employees and shareholders, but it’s a highly competitive industry and very regulated, so consumers are protected from unreasonably high premiums. I will concede that the health/life side probably is a bit more dry and I certainly think non-catastrophic health insurance is a pretty ridiculous money grab. Not really providing any service other than being a middle man that could easily be replaced with an open market.

I've been a working club musician for 45 years - played all over the US and in other countries. I knew that's what I wanted to do and stuck with it. Anytime I thought of quitting, I knew I'd be miserable doing anything else. I think it's either in you, or it's not. A lot of people get into music that didn't really have it in them as a main desire, just a sideline thing with a bunch of other stuff cluttering their life. You can do well at anything in life if you stay focused and keep working at it ... most people look for a quick payoff and when it doesn't happen, they quit.
