The segment on inheritance tax is the most balanced I have heard so far. Saying you’re not anti tax but putting IHT into perspective against profit and why it’s unfair so clearly makes it easy to understand especially as it was articulated so well. Balancing it with the fact that your prepared to pay tax as you understand there is a broken system but that tax needs to be affordable/fair is the message that needs to get out and it needs to be folks like yourself saying it, not folks like clarkson who have money. Whilst the public are onside, I don’t think they actually understand the issue and think you’re anti tax. Straw poll in my office of 30 and I’m the only one that understood the actual issue. With that in mind, I’m even more with you that the approach should be not going aggressive as you’d lose the public instantly as they don’t truly get it. Also, the idea of working with the potential future government is the most genius thing I’ve heard so far. Everyone in farming needs to do that now. The only thing that is missing from the conversation is that no one from the industry talks about the ways of managing the tax. The reality is, whilst none are ideal, there are options. Also, no one talks about the fact it’s a failure of the industry that succession planning has never been important, rather avoided as it’s an awkward conversation. But imagine if you had all already got plans in place, this change for many would be a moot point.

Chicken and egg situation really all of the workers in the industry's you mention need to eat food, they could grow their own but they wouldn't have time to do their job, we could farm without the things you mention but we wouldn't be able to grow enough for an ever growing population

You miss the part where they explained how they make a 0.5% profit on land but need to find 20% of the value? That's 40 years profit they need to find in much less than that, just because someone died. It's not possible

@richardmatthews3304 Күн бұрын
@@ThingyGoos 1984 when they took the tax of land, wheat was £124 per ton land was £1470 per acre. November 2024 wheat was £176 per ton, land £8220 per acre. 1984 took 12 tons wheat to buy 1 acre of land 2024 it would take 46 tons to buy an acre. In 2024 farmers maybe asset rich but we are cash poor, your right we can't afford the tax

One of the things I don't understand about the farm tax is they say it is to hit the people who buy up farm land to avoid inheritance tax but by setting the rate at 20% you could say they have actively encouraged those who are trying to avoid IHT to carry on buying farm land and potentially they are enabling them to buy up more as genuine farmers will have to sell off land to pay their 20% tax meaning more farm land will become available for the IHT avoiders to buy. So the genuine farmer gets hit while the avoiders are still incentivised to buy up land. Make it make sense!

I also said that paying 20% on a land is sight better than 40% on any other asset worth the same value.

One problem that I see. The simple people, who have no connection to farming, forget or don't even know, that we don't sell directly to consumers. (except if you have your own shop) Most of the times, there is a middleman who buys our products then sell it or process it first. But somehow, it's our fault if the prices rises, when we aren't the one, who tells the prices.
