When you build ‚historic’ buildings now you end up with Disneyland and not authentic structure. Do preserve existing matter but when there is necessity to build it must be done with the means that are authentic now. We are poorly organized society here in Poland but at some level of urban planing there is some ‘facist’ historic nerd lobby being active and historic forms of homes are preferred globally regardless of historic contest or lack of it. That is how you create neighborhoods filled with pretentious, mass made buildings and complete lack of authentic architectural culture. And still this kitsch have failed to protect us from massive destruction of natural habitats and monstrous congestion cause let’s protect our traditional values and be phobic of any modern solutions.
@streetscaping26 күн бұрын
Who is the one to decide what is "authentic"? Also, the world "kitsch" conveniently is used when drawing inspiration from anything before the 1930s. However, building modernist (bauhaus) architecture is somehow not kitsch...
@pawemichalski223126 күн бұрын
@ there is drawing inspiration and drawing inspiration. I know a row of xviiii century classical semidetached mansions on tiny plots with styrofoam moldings and ornamental plastic lanterns sold to lower middle class. I don’t know any other term to call it apart from kitch. And the trouble with bauhaus is that there is a reason behind every move taken, from the layout to the shape, to the room height, to the material applied. And the aesthetic is very simple. But still we are in 2020s so why should we build as if it was 1920s?

The buildings at 7:35 (Stopera) and 9:00 (Heinekenhoek) are not boring at all. The old Heinekenhoek was a godawful mess of former houses renovated over and over again beyond recognition, and filled with advertising. In both cases, the new buildings' size is still appropriate for the environment; at least they didn't build skyscrapers there. You seem to suggest that all buildings in Amsterdam should confirm to the style of the 17th century, while the city's most iconic style, Amsterdamse School, dates from the early 20th century (for example, the City Theater at 9:02). One advantage of the Amsterdamse School style is that it works at any scale. In older buildings, there's no visual unity between the row houses and the monumental buildings. All in all, a living city should not be limited to architecture from one period. When there are thousands of 17th century buildings, we can get rid of a few to do something new.

@@rnimations Well.. yes, but actually no. Yes, American cars are huge and need more space because of it. No, having "more space" does not make them fit better, planning the roadway properly will make cars fit better. It is not necessary to have 2 lane streets here. Instead, had this been undeveloped land built for a business or city center, we could add a center grass median and a tram railway. We don't have that option, so we'll just make it one way, a wide walking path, or a 2 lane biking biking path. Also, the diagram that shows the cars parked on the bigger street basically created a 2 way street, with 2 lanes each. This was wide enough for 2 cars, but it could be made slightly wider so we could add slight jettisons, pavement peninsulas, or speed bumbs to create a street fhat naturally creates slower drivin environments, while preserving parking space and walking areas. We could also add islands for people to drive around with speed bumps near them. You can also see that the avenue connected to the street is narrower than the street by counting cross walk stripes. That would be a one way.

@user-nb8yt2il2rАй бұрын
So you made all streets one-way, and made on street parking that intermingled with people sipping tea? I dont know if thats an improvement. Especially when you factor in that in business centers you need commercial vehicle traffic to get through, a lot, and if you have a delivery van or semi parking and taking up the whole street, thats gonn be an issue
@maplerivers29 күн бұрын
this is a one to one copy of dutch street design, and most streets in the netherlands are two way and not one way even when they look like this and traffic is much more improved
@badatsomerhing28 күн бұрын
This only has a single one way street. Even if both were one way, that doesn't hinder a whole bunch. Alleys exist, and delivery vans are why we have them. Parking is necessary, yes, but we don't need a parking lot larger than the building itself and we encourage the use of other forms of transport by doing this. Walking, biking, and roller skating all become more viable, not to mention skateboarding, scootering, and bringing your kids on a walk with a wagon. You can also see that the avenue connected to the street is narrower than the street by counting crosswalk stripes. That would be a one way. That would be the only one way designed to be a one way. As far as semi parking, I don't want an 18 wheeler in my walking area in the same way I don't want them close to the Walmart entrance. They're huge. They block views, and they're ugly. Semi drivers probably wouldn't even want to drive on the first street anyway. It's still a busy walking area regardless, and I can see that by looking at the size of the buildings alone. So, instead of "mingling parking area with tea sipping tables" we "created a multi capacity business center that encourages physical activity, safe driving, and leisurely activities." Also, we can always just do a classic "make the corners near the cross walk wider. We'll paint in parking spots in the areas unfilled by pedestrian zones," because we already do this and it isnt a bad thing.

@ryn2844Ай бұрын
@streetscaping I guess that's true, but you didn't say that this was 30km/h zone, and I don't think this street design forces people to actually drive 30km/h. The street is pretty straight, and if you include the parking area, a lot of the space is still dedicated to cars, which subtly signals faster speeds. The street has also only just been converted from major car gutter to this, so for quite a while people will still be adapting to its new function, and they'll still think of it as mainly for cars. Transforming it from car gutter straight to shared space is skipping a step. You first need to reduce the amount of car traffic that goes there in the first place, and increase the amount of bike traffic, otherwise cars simply dominate the road. Also, with this design bicycles will be in the dooring zone. I've cycled in Amsterdam my whole life, and streets that look like this, narrow, shared, with parking on both sides, aren't comfortable to ride on if there's a significant amount of car traffic. You'd need to prohibit through-traffic for this to work. Otherwise these feel dangerous. I avoid them when I can. I'd say remove a parking lane on one side, and on the other side, put a bike lane, separated from the main road by the remaining parking lane. Then next time the street is re-done, and car traffic has reduced in the whole network, maybe then you can turn it into a shared space.

Modern architects are the most narcistic dominant people in the world. For example in the Utrecht a new shopping center The Wall was built. A giant bathtub of 500 meters long. With parking garages indoor of course. Yet The Wall also needed 2 diesel engines to provide water pressure for the sprinkler system. These exhaust pipes of these engine were not built outside The Wall, but indoors into a parking garage. Quite unhealthy, but the architect resisted to build these tail pipes outside, because they were ugly. In the end the health code prevailed and the tail pipes were placed outdoors. You can see it on this picture, 2 tiny grey squares. www.google.nl/maps/@52.1041282,5.0593171,3a,75y,33.17h,89.54t/data=!3m7!1e1!3m5!1s_g7R1z3YrT5AdQPscArBpg!2e0!6shttps:%2F%2Fstreetviewpixels-pa.googleapis.com%2Fv1%2Fthumbnail%3Fcb_client%3Dmaps_sv.tactile%26w%3D900%26h%3D600%26pitch%3D0.45849077070570843%26panoid%3D_g7R1z3YrT5AdQPscArBpg%26yaw%3D33.16952241059501!7i16384!8i8192?entry=ttu&g_ep=EgoyMDI0MTIxMC4wIKXMDSoASAFQAw%3D%3D

The buildings that were constructed as replacement of the demolished buildings were actually quite an improvement compared to earlier plans. The original plan was to put lots of offices there, but instead many of the new buildings became social housing (also due to the protests). Providing residents with homes of pretty good quality with relatively affordable rents. You might find the architecture ugly (personally I don't find it too bad) and you might find it a shame that historical buildings were demolished (I would agree). But in neighborhood building, they do quite a good job up until today :)
