beautiful shots, man. looks like you're in TX. i lived in austin for over 10 years and found out how to attract hummers to the yard better than a feeder. plant a patch of mexican sunflowers (Tithonia rotundifolia) in a good spot for photography. they are annuals and grow fast from seed and produce tons of bright orange blooms that draw hummers like a magnet. this way you can get shots of them feeding from a natural source, along with the other types of shots.

Russell, one of the best things you taught me at Yellowstone in 2022 was the crop mode of the R5. As suggested, I have assigned it to a button for quick on / off access without even lowering the camera from my eye. I’ve had a lot of people debate me about using this feature and I was surprised you didn’t mention the one most important reason to use the crop mode vs cropping in post (in my humble opinion) that it makes it much easier for eye detect (especially in small animals) to lock on the subject. Just wanted to share that with the community.

Photographing a bird in blue sky background...exposure compensation +1 or -1 ?
@TheWildlifePhotoShow3 ай бұрын
Usually no exposure compensation in most cases. The blue sky is around 18% gray and the camera can usually get the exposure right. If you have to do any exposure compensation, it would usually be to the plus side.

I was thinking of using LED flashlights 🔦 set up like spot lights so I can use the 3200 shutter and hoped reducing the noise from running the ISO high. All my freeze motion shots are grainy and I already have 500 portrait shots of them on the branches 🥰

the focused beam of LED flashlights can damage animals' (or humans') eyes. it's better to get some powerful LED studio lights and soften them with diffusers

Sure Frank. The flash is a Canon 550ex with a battery pack. The PIR was made by TRL Cam (www.trlcam.com) and the transmitters are a bundle that came from Camtraptions (Camtraptions.com). The animals are usually about ten feet or so from the flash. I hope that helps.

I have done macro and close-up Photography since 1980, now it is much easier with mirrorless digital Cameras, because you can magnify the view in the EVF and get the focus exactly where you want it. For shy Dragonflies and Butterflies I use the Sony A7RIV and A7RIVA with either the Sony 135mm 1.8 GM (70 cm close focus) or the old but very good adapted analog Tamron SP 300mm 5.6 Adaptall-2 (1.4 meter close focus).
@TheWildlifePhotoShow Жыл бұрын
I think you are correct. I've since got a digital camera since I did this video and it does make things easier. Maybe I should do a follow-up video? I like the rig you use as well.
