A Scouting adult in our troop asked me "how are new merit badges chosen". Does Stan or any viewers know how new merit badges are made?
@ScouterStan2 күн бұрын
I only know of one person who got a brand new Merit Badge (Scuba Diving) submitted and through the approval process. They had to write up the entire manual for the Merit Badge in addition to doing all of the research and references. It is a lot of work and with 138 Merit Badges already out there they're very reluctant for more unless it is unique and new. The entire process is overseen by the National Advancement Committee. I believe at the time they had a subcommittee for Merit Badge Development. There might be someone out there who has more information than I remember from many years ago. YIS⚜

@@ScouterStan Thanks for the comment. A related question is who decides when merit badges should be combined or eliminated. I assume that it would be the national advancement committee. There are several cases where very similar merit badges are available. I have wondered if the Bugling Merit Badge may be combined with the Music Merit Badge.

In fairness, it's alot easier to earn Eagle scout today than it was 20-30-40 years ago.
@ScouterStan2 күн бұрын
Thank you for contributing to our discussion. As a district advancement chairman, I review a lot of the Eagle projects for my district. From my memory when I did my project (1980s) it was just a worksheet. The project workbook has 4 segments and multi-page questions that have to be answered before it is approved. The project is then reviewed as part of the Eagle Board of Review. The requirements outside of the project have been pretty much the same. This may be a misconception of people today. It's still quite amazing that young people can work hard to achieve this worthy goal and become Eagle Scouts. It would be easy to think that it is no longer difficult to achieve from the outside looking in. I assure you it is difficult just ask any new Eagle Scout. YIS ⚜

As a youth I made it from cubs to tenderfoot before pursuing other paths. When my daughter joined the troop I became a leader. When I bought my shirt it came with the current council patch and I quickly removed it. I replaced it with a council patch from the era when I was a scout. I think it looks better. It also lets me talk about my time in scouts to the youth and other adults. I have a few other special occasion council strips, but I haven't found one that can replace the vintage one on my shoulder yet.

@ScouterStan15 күн бұрын
@josephkolb2248 - Troops can set up their own requirements as far as uniform compliance. A standard neckerchief and hat gear can be specified. Some may even go from “belt-up” requirements, meaning that the wearing of blue jeans is acceptable. Every Troop is different in how strict they are to their code. Generally, as long as the uniform item is an official issue it is permitted to be worn. The “tent style” (Garrison) hat is an official issue and has never been banned from use. I have an Honor Guard Troop 911 in my Council that wears the red berets from the 70s and they look really sharp. Wearing your father's hat as a youth is a wonderful tribute. This style of hat can also be worn on the belt line on windy days. Thank you so much for contributing to the conversation here on the channel. YIS⚜

My wife, an assistant scout master, carries a scout book in a cover which blends in too easily. I've sewn patches on it to make it stand out. In that case, I ordered a few joke patches, sasquatch, Crystal Lake Camp, and spoof merit badges. My daughter drew on hers to make it stand out so she isn't using that space for patches.

I stumbled upon this video when I was looking for “Boy Scout uniforms from the 1950’s.” I looked this up because a couple days ago, I found a Boy Scout uniform from the 1950’s at and antique store. I was so excited when I found the uniform because when my Grandpa was a Boy Scout in the 50’s this is the uniform he would have worn. He got my father and his three brothers into scout’s. My father loved scouts so much he got me and my two brothers into scout’s.😊

I have great memories of being a Cub Scout. I was in 3rd grade in 1973, my father was the Club Scout Leader. Meetings were once a week at the Den Mother’s house. On those’s days we would all wear our CS uniforms to school. This was a big deal wearing the uniform and there were many of us in uniform. I believe our numbers increased just because we were wearing it, We headed directly to the meeting after school on the school bus. It’s a shame there are no pictures of those days. I would have really liked to see a picture of my father and I in the uniform together. People just didn’t carry cameras around like they do now.

The National Youth Council is a group of up to 30 youth that are involved in Scouting America (BSA) as a type of think tank. This works closely with the national committee when considering issues. As a national subcommittee, it is not something within the purview of the ScouterStan channel other than commentary. I'm an Explorer Scout in Scotland, I tend to go camp blanket, but I have an old style shirt I put some on, I have a safari jacket (army surplus) with some on. I have a canvas rucksack with a few on. I used to have one under my neckie (an English flag badge to annoy one of my leaders) but I took it off for the Blair Atholl jamborette in a couple of weeks so I can pass inspection. I've seen a couple of people with badges in the bottom of their shirt so that it is hidden when tucked into trousers or kilts. When my dad got his Queen's Scout Award he had one on the back of his neckie, because he was the only person from his group their, so he could just say it was his group badge (which are allowed on the group neckie) Edit: One Idea I have had it to put one on my kilt in place of a kilt pin

I earned 37 merit badges, and Eagle by May of 1973. I ran out of time to reach the gold palm by the required months. I turned 18 that next month (June). I didn't even get the bronze palm. I think if the required amount of badges are earned the palm should be awarded. Just my opinion. I asked council, and they rejected my request. Oh well, can't hurt for asking. A side note, the month after June 25th. I became property of the United States Marine Corps.
@Angiotensin-uw1zx29 күн бұрын
I got the merit badges for the palms but i never actually got them and was recently going to the council to see if i could get them. Did you get denied ?
@ScouterStan29 күн бұрын
Back in the day palms were also a way to keep scouts involved after becoming an Eagle Scout. There are three months of service to the troop, and 5 additional merit badges required to qualify for each palm. A Scoutmasters Conference and a Troop Board of Review are required each time. Many new Eagle Scouts aged out on palms because they could not serve as youth for the required three months. Recently the policy has changed to allow palms to be recognized at the Eagle Board of Review. New Eagle Scouts are awarded palms up to the earned level at that time. You need 21 merit badges for Eagle, 26 for Bronze Palm, 31 for Gold Palm, and 36 for Silver Palm. Some Eagle Scouts even go as far as getting all 138 merit badges (7 Silver Palms). Less than 700 have ever done that in the history of Scouting. It's important to remember that you earned the Silver Palm by the number of merit badges but not by the nine months of required service in the troop at that time. Personally, I believe you are a Silver Palm Eagle Scout even if it's not recognized by the Council. If you were having your Eagle Border of Review today, you would receive all three palms officially. Thank you for your service in the Marine Corps, Oohrah! YIS⚜
